Chapter 6: The Account That Was Never Mine

The bank manager’s voice was still echoing through my father’s phone.

“There is an account opened under your daughter’s name.””

I stared at my father.

Then at the phone.

Then back at him.

“That’s impossible.””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

“I never opened anything.””

My father covered the microphone.

“I know.””

But his face told me he was afraid.

Not of me.

Not of the accusation.

Of what he might discover next.

The bank manager continued speaking.

“Mr. Harris, we need you and your daughter to come in as soon as possible. There are documents that require immediate review.””

My father ended the call.

For a few seconds, neither of us moved.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Lily was upstairs sleeping.

She had no idea that the adults around her had been fighting over things she never asked for.

Money.

Power.

Control.

I looked at my father.

“Did Vanessa create it?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than the answer.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I’m trying to understand.””

I stood up.

“No. I need the truth.””

My father looked down.

And that was when I realized something.

He wasn’t hiding something from me because he wanted to protect himself.

He was hiding something because he was ashamed.

The next morning, we went to the bank.

The same bank where my grandmother had kept her accounts for decades.

The manager, a serious woman named Rebecca, greeted us immediately.

She closed the office door behind us.

“I want to be very clear,” she said.

“Your identity was not stolen.””

I frowned.

“Then what happened?””

She opened a folder.

“Someone legally created this account using your personal information.””

My father leaned forward.

“Who had access?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“That is the problem.””

She slid a document across the table.

“The paperwork was submitted with authorization connected to your family trust.””

My heart dropped.

“My family trust?””

Rebecca nodded.

“The account was designed to receive funds from your father’s inheritance.””

I looked at my father.

“What?””

He looked just as shocked.

“I never approved this.””

Rebecca tapped the document.

“Someone did.””

She pointed at the signature.

My eyes followed.

And then everything stopped.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

It was mine.

But it wasn’t my signature.

Someone had copied it.

My father whispered:

“Vanessa.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

We both looked at her.

“What do you mean, no?””

She turned another page.

“The account was created six years ago.””

Six years.

My stomach twisted.

“That’s impossible.””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Why?””

“Because Lily wasn’t even born.””

My father went completely still.

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“Exactly.””

I looked between them.

“What are you saying?””

My father didn’t answer.

He was staring at the papers.

Six years ago.

Before Lily.

Before Vanessa’s betrayal was discovered.

Before any of this.

Rebecca continued.

“Your father’s trust was designed to protect future grandchildren.””

I swallowed.

“Future grandchildren?””

My father finally spoke.

“My mother wanted to make sure the family’s future was secure.””

Rebecca nodded.

“The account was supposed to remain untouched.””

I looked at the fake signature.

“So someone tried to move money?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Rebecca paused.

Then said:

“Almost one million dollars.””

The room became freezing cold.

My father closed his eyes.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to steal from him.

She was trying to steal from Lily before Lily even existed.

But there was something that didn’t make sense.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at me.

“If Vanessa created this account six years ago…”

I looked at my father.

“How could she have known about Lily?””

My father’s expression changed.

And I knew.

He knew something.

“Dad?””

He looked away.

“Your mother was pregnant before she died.””

I froze.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“She knew she was sick. She knew she might not survive.””

I stared at him.

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“She left something for you.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

A memory.

A childhood memory.

My father sitting beside my bed.

Telling me my mother loved me.

Telling me she had made plans.

But he had never told me what those plans were.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because Vanessa found the documents first.””

I felt my anger return.

“What documents?””

My father looked at the folder.

“The ones proving you were the true beneficiary.””

Before I could respond, Rebecca’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

Then she looked at us.

“There’s someone else listed on the account.””

My father stood.

“Who?””

Rebecca slowly turned the screen toward us.

A name appeared.

A name that made my father’s entire body go rigid.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Ethan.

It was someone from my own family.

Someone who had been helping Vanessa from the beginning.

Someone who knew every secret.

Rebecca whispered:

“The co-signer is your father’s brother.””

My uncle.

The man who had hugged me at Christmas.

The man who had told me Vanessa was “like a daughter” to him.

The man who had stood beside us during every family dinner.

My father sat down slowly.

“No.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Yes.””

He stared at the name.

May you like

And then he whispered something I never expected to hear.

“I trusted the wrong people.””
