Chapter 3: The Daughter He Never Forgot
My father had always been a quiet man.
That was why everyone underestimated him.
He wasn’t the type to yell.
He wasn’t the type to threaten.
But when he finally made a decision, nothing could move him.
We left the airport that afternoon.
No vacation.
No happy family photos.
No tropical beach.
Just unanswered questions.
At home, Lily sat on the living room floor coloring while the adults destroyed years of lies.
My father placed a folder on the table.
“I should have told you this a long time ago.””
I looked at him.
“Told me what?””
He opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old ones.
Very old.
“My mother left me something before she died.””
I frowned.
“Grandma?””
He nodded.
“She left an inheritance.””
I waited.
“That doesn’t explain Vanessa.””
My father sighed.
“She knew about it before we married.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
“She asked questions about my finances from the beginning.””
I looked toward the hallway where Lily was coloring.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
My father looked down.
“I thought I had built a perfect family. I didn’t want to admit I might have been wrong.””
The front door suddenly opened.
Vanessa walked inside.
She looked different.
Smaller.
Less powerful.
“I need to talk.””
My father stood.
“You don’t live here anymore.””
She ignored him.
She looked at me.
“You think you know everything.””
I crossed my arms.
“Do I?””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t know what your father promised me.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
Vanessa smiled bitterly.
“You never told her?””
“Told me what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your father planned to leave everything to you.””
Silence.
I stared at my father.
He didn’t deny it.
Vanessa laughed.
“That’s why I was never enough.””
My father shook his head.
“No. You were never enough because you cared more about money than people.””
She pointed at me.
“She was always your priority.””
I felt anger rising.
“My daughter wasn’t even your priority today.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
Then Lily walked into the room.
“Mommy?””
Everyone froze.
She looked at Vanessa.
“Are we still going on the airplane?””
The question destroyed the room.
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“I…”
She couldn’t answer.
Lily lowered her eyes.
“I packed my bunny.””
My father immediately knelt beside her.
“Lily.””
She looked at him.
“I’m sorry, Grandpa. I think I ruined the trip.””
My father’s face broke.
“No, sweetheart.””
He hugged her.
“You didn’t ruin anything.””
He looked over Lily’s shoulder at Vanessa.
“Someone else did.””
Vanessa left ten minutes later.
But before she walked out, she turned around.
“You’ll regret choosing them.””
My father replied calmly.
“I already regret choosing you.””
The door closed.
For the first time in years, our house was quiet.
But that night, at 2:13 a.m., my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice whispered.
“You need to ask your father why Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding something.””
I sat up.
“What?””
The man continued.
“Your father has been lying too.””
The call ended.
And when I looked toward the hallway…
My father was standing there.
May you like
Awake.
Listening.
