Chapter 5: The Last Move
Three days later, my father filed for divorce.
For the first time in months, I saw peace return to his face.
But Vanessa wasn’t finished.
People like her don’t accept losing.
They search for another way to win.
The first sign came when she showed up at my daughter’s school.
I found out when Lily’s teacher called me.
“She seemed upset,” the teacher said.
I rushed there.
Lily was sitting in the office holding her backpack.
When she saw me, she ran into my arms.
“Mommy, Vanessa said Grandpa doesn’t love me.””
My heart broke.
“What?””
The teacher looked uncomfortable.
“She told Lily that adults sometimes choose money over children.””
I felt anger burning through me.
Vanessa had lost everything.
And she was still trying to hurt a child.
That evening, my father drove to her house.
I went with him.
Vanessa opened the door with a smile.
“I knew you’d come.””
My father stared at her.
“You went to Lily’s school.””
She shrugged.
“I wanted to say goodbye.””
“You don’t say goodbye by hurting a child.””
Her smile faded.
“You turned everyone against me.””
“No,” my father said.
“You showed everyone who you were.””
She laughed.
“You think you won?””
My father didn’t answer.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don’t know what I have.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
She smiled.
“I kept copies.””
My father’s face changed.
“Copies of what?””
“Everything.””
She looked at me.
“Your father’s mistakes. His secrets. His private deals.””
My father remained calm.
“What are you planning?””
Vanessa leaned against the doorway.
“Maybe I’ll make sure everyone knows what kind of man you really are.””
For a moment, I worried.
Then my father smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A confident one.
“Vanessa.””
She paused.
“I was hoping you would say that.””
He handed her an envelope.
Her expression changed.
“What is this?””
“Your final warning.””
She opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
Her own words.
Her own plans.
Her own messages.
The evidence she thought she had hidden.
Her face slowly lost color.
“How did you get these?””
My father looked at Ethan.
Vanessa turned.
Her son stood behind us.
And for the first time…
He looked ashamed of her.
“You betrayed me,” Ethan whispered.
Vanessa stared at him.
“After everything I did for you?””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Lily.
“After everything you did to her.””
Vanessa had no answer.
The woman who once controlled every room she entered suddenly had nothing left.
But as we walked away, my father’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“It’s the bank.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
My father listened for several seconds.
Then his face went completely pale.
“They found another account.””
I frowned.
“Another account belonging to Vanessa?””
He slowly shook his head.
“No.””
A silence followed.
Then he whispered:
“They found an account opened in your name.””
I felt the world tilt.
Because I had never opened any account.

And the person who had…
Was someone I trusted completely.
