Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Vacation

I had spent years trying to understand Vanessa.

That was my mistake.

I thought she was difficult.

I thought she was insecure.

I thought maybe she was just trying to create her own family after marrying my father.

I never imagined she had been quietly destroying mine.

The photograph on my father’s phone was a bank document.

My name was printed clearly across the top.

I stared at it.

“What is that?””

My father looked at me.

“I was hoping you could tell me.””

Vanessa immediately stepped between us.

“Jack, this is not the place.””

“No,” my father replied.

“This is exactly the place.””

People nearby started glancing over.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“You’re embarrassing me.””

My father laughed once.

A humorless sound.

“Embarrassing you?””

He held up the phone.

“You secretly contacted the bank using information you were never supposed to have.””

Her face tightened.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Lily squeezed my hand.

“Mommy, can we go home?””

That question hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.

My daughter didn’t want a vacation anymore.

She wanted safety.

I hugged her.

“We’re okay, sweetheart.””

But I wasn’t sure if that was true.

My father turned away from Vanessa.

“I should have listened when people warned me.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“People?””

My father looked at me.

“Your aunt told me years ago that something felt wrong.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“Oh, please.””

“No,” he said.

“You made me think she was jealous. You made me think everyone who questioned you was against you.””

His voice became stronger.

“But today you showed me exactly who you are.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is insane. I bought three tickets because Ethan and I needed more space.””

I stared at her.

“More space?””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“You removed a child from a vacation because you wanted more space?””

She looked away.

That was when I knew.

There was no explanation.

No misunderstanding.

No accident.

She had made a choice.

My father walked toward the airport seats.

“Everyone sit down.””

Vanessa refused.

“I’m not doing this.””

“You are.””

The authority in his voice stopped her.

Even Ethan looked uncomfortable.

We sat.

For twenty minutes, my father said nothing.

He simply stared at his phone.

Then he opened an email.

“I received this last night.””

Vanessa froze.

“What email?””

He looked at her.

“The one you hoped I would never see.””

My stomach twisted.

“What is it?””

My father handed me the phone.

The email was from a private investigator.

And attached were photographs.

Pictures of Vanessa meeting someone.

A man I didn’t recognize.

My father spoke quietly.

“I hired someone three weeks ago.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“You investigated me?””

“After I noticed missing money from our accounts.””

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

He tapped the screen.

“Then explain why you transferred thousands of dollars to this man.””

Ethan looked at his mother.

“What man?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“It’s not what you think.””

My father leaned forward.

“Then tell us what it is.””

She stayed silent.

And that silence answered everything.

The airport announcement called our flight.

Nobody moved.

Nobody cared.

My father looked at the boarding gate.

Then at the woman he had defended for years.

“I spent my entire marriage protecting you.””

His voice cracked.

“And you spent it preparing to betray me.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

My father looked up.

“Before you do…”

She stopped.

He held up another document.

“There’s something else.””

Her face drained of color.

“What?””

My father placed the paper on the seat.

A divorce agreement.

Already prepared.

Vanessa stared at it.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“You found out about the inheritance, didn’t you?””

I looked at my father.

Inheritance?

What inheritance?

May you like

My father slowly turned toward me.

And the expression on his face told me I was about to learn a secret he had hidden my entire life.
