Chapter 9: The Message That Changed Everything
David Carter read the scholarship committee's email in silence.
The message was short, formal, and devastating.
Someone had contacted the committee claiming that Jasmine had agreed to withdraw her scholarship and that David had approved the decision.
Neither statement was true.
Jasmine stood beside the dining table, struggling to breathe normally.
“Dad, what if they believe it?””
“They've asked for clarification. That means we have an opportunity to correct the record.””
“But why would someone use your name?””
David looked at the email again.
“That's what we need to establish.””
He helped Jasmine prepare a response confirming that she had never requested a withdrawal, had never authorized anyone to redirect her award, and intended to remain enrolled.
David separately confirmed that he had not approved any such arrangement.
They attached the relevant correspondence and asked the committee to preserve the communications associated with the disputed requests.
Jasmine read the final message before sending it.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.
“What if this makes them think I'm involved in some kind of family dispute?””
“Then we'll explain only what is necessary. The important thing is that they know you never authorized the withdrawal.””
Jasmine sent the response.
For a moment, she sat motionless.
Then she whispered, “I don't understand how she could do this.””
David pulled out a chair beside her.
“I don't either.””
He didn't try to excuse Jessica.
He didn't tell Jasmine that everything would be fine.
He had promised to protect her future, but he now understood that doing so required more than replacing the money.
They needed to establish the facts, secure the records, and make sure no one else could make decisions in Jasmine's name.
Across the room, Cameron sat with his laptop open.
He had been reviewing the financial services company's response.
The company had confirmed receipt of his request and was processing his inquiry.
It had not yet provided the complete agreement.
But the reference number connected to the second agreement had been acknowledged.
Cameron looked troubled.
“Dad, the company says it needs to verify another person's authorization before it can release some of the information.””
“Did it identify the person?””
“No. It just says the account has an additional authorized contact.””
David nodded.
“We'll wait for the proper documentation.””
Cameron stared at the screen.
“Do you think Mom signed something else?””
“I don't know.””
“But she told me everything was just about basketball.””
David leaned back.
“Then we need to compare what she told you with what the documents actually say.””
Before they could continue, the front door opened.
Jessica entered carrying a shopping bag.
She stopped when she saw the three of them at the dining table.
“What now?””
David turned toward her.
“The scholarship committee received another message claiming I approved the withdrawal of Jasmine's award.””
Jessica froze.
Then she placed the shopping bag on the floor.
“I don't know anything about that.””
David watched her carefully.
“Did you contact the committee again?””
“No.””
“Did you send a message using my name?””
“Of course not!””
“Did you ask anyone else to contact them?””
Jessica shook her head.
“No. This is becoming absurd.””
Jasmine turned her laptop toward Jessica.
“The message says Dad approved the arrangement. He didn't.””
Jessica glanced at the screen.
“I can't explain what somebody else sent.””
David's eyes narrowed slightly.
“Then we'll preserve the message and ask the committee to investigate how it was submitted.””
Jessica's face tightened.
“You're going to turn this into some kind of legal case?””
“We're going to establish who sent the messages and protect Jasmine's scholarship.””
“You don't need to involve anyone else. I can fix this.””
David looked at her.
“How?””
Jessica hesitated.
“I'll repay the money.””
“When?””
“As soon as possible.””
“How much can you repay immediately?””
She stared at him.
“David, you know our finances aren't that simple.””
“Then give me a realistic repayment plan.””
“I need time.””
“Jasmine's tuition deadline is approaching.””
Jessica looked toward her stepdaughter.
“You're not going to lose your place in college. Your father can cover the deposit.””
Jasmine shook her head.
“Why do you keep acting as though that solves everything?””
“Because it does solve the immediate problem!””
“No, it doesn't. It leaves me wondering whether you used my account for something else. It leaves Cameron wondering what he signed. And it leaves Dad trying to figure out why somebody is using his name.””
Jessica's expression hardened.
“You're making me sound like I planned some elaborate scheme.””
“Then show us that you didn't.””
For several seconds, Jessica looked as though she might answer.
Instead, she picked up her shopping bag.
“I'm not doing this anymore.””
She walked upstairs.
David watched her go.
Then he turned to Jasmine.
“Don't respond to any more messages from the committee without keeping a copy. We'll make sure the record is clear.””
Jasmine nodded.
Cameron looked at his father.
“What if the second agreement has something to do with the money that went missing?””
“Then the records may help us understand it.””
“Should we tell Mom the company has responded?””
“We don't need to hide that we're requesting documentation. But we also shouldn't speculate about what the agreement means until we see it.””
Cameron closed his laptop.
“I keep thinking about that $2,400 deposit.””
Jasmine looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Mom told me she had been saving money for my training for months. She said she had set aside a little every week.””
David glanced at the bank statements.
“Did she tell you where the money was kept?””
“No. I assumed it was in her account.””
Jasmine felt a familiar knot forming in her stomach.
The first unexplained transfers had occurred before the scholarship arrived.
The money hadn't simply vanished after Jessica saw an opportunity.
She had apparently been moving funds for weeks.
David collected the documents and placed them in a folder.
“We'll keep the records organized. The bank is reviewing the disputed transactions, the scholarship committee has our statements, and Cameron has requested the complete agreement.””
He paused.
“We're going to let those processes work.””
But David's confidence was tested the following morning.
A letter arrived from the financial services company.
It was addressed to Cameron.
The envelope contained a formal notice acknowledging his request for information and identifying the existence of an agreement connected to his personal details.
Cameron opened it at the dining table.
He read the first paragraph.
Then his face went pale.
“What does it say?”” Jasmine asked.
He handed the letter to David.
The notice stated that Cameron's signature appeared on a document authorizing certain financial arrangements.
It did not establish whether he fully understood the document when he signed it.
It also did not explain the separate $2,750 payment.
However, it confirmed that the company had a record of the agreement and that Cameron could request a copy through the stated verification process.
David read the letter carefully.
“This doesn't tell us everything, but it confirms that the document is real.””
Cameron swallowed.
“Can it make me responsible for something I didn't know about?””
“We can't determine that from this notice alone. We'll need the complete agreement and, if necessary, appropriate professional advice.””
Jasmine reached for his hand.
Cameron looked devastated.
“I should have read it.””
“You trusted your mother,” Jasmine said.
“I still should have read it.””
David placed the letter on the table.
“Both things can be true. You can recognize that you should have read a document and still deserve an honest explanation from the person who asked you to sign it.””
Cameron nodded slowly.
He looked toward the stairs.
“I want to ask her about it.””
“Then ask her,” David replied.
“But keep the conversation focused on what the document says, not what we suspect it means.””
Cameron stood and went upstairs.
A few minutes later, David heard raised voices.
He started toward the staircase, but Jasmine gently touched his arm.
“Let him talk to her first.””
David stopped.
They waited in the living room.
Then Cameron returned, holding the letter.
His face was red, and his eyes were wet.
“She admitted she signed something, too.””
David stood immediately.
“What did she say?””
Cameron shook his head.
“She said the company was helping her reorganize some payments. She said she thought it would be easier if she handled everything through one arrangement.””
“What arrangement?””
“She wouldn't tell me.””
Jasmine felt her stomach tighten.
“Did she say whether my scholarship was involved?””
Cameron nodded.
“She said the scholarship money was supposed to be temporary.””
David closed his eyes briefly.
“Temporary for what?””
Cameron looked at him.
“She said she had a financial obligation that needed to be paid before the end of the month.””
The room fell silent.
Jasmine slowly sat down.
“So she didn't spend the money only on basketball.””
David didn't answer immediately.
“We have evidence that some of it went to basketball expenses. We have evidence of other transfers. Now we have her statement that she had another financial obligation. We still need the complete records to determine exactly how much went where.””
Cameron looked sick.
“She said she was going to replace it.””
“Did she explain how?””
“No.””
Jasmine stared at the floor.
For days, Jessica had insisted that the scholarship was simply being used to help the family.
But now the explanation was changing.
First, it was uniforms.
Then tournament expenses.
Then administrative payments.
Now there was a separate financial obligation that apparently needed to be paid before the end of the month.
David picked up his phone.
He called the bank to ask whether there had been any additional activity or whether further steps were available to secure the disputed account.
He followed the representative's instructions and documented the conversation.
Then he contacted the scholarship committee to confirm that the new disputed message had been preserved and that Jasmine's award remained under review.
He did not make accusations he couldn't support.
He did not threaten Jessica.
He simply made sure that the records reflected what had happened.
By late afternoon, the house had grown unnaturally quiet.
Jessica remained upstairs.
Cameron sat at the kitchen table, staring at his phone.
Jasmine tried to study, but she couldn't concentrate.
Her textbooks lay open in front of her, filled with notes she had written before her world turned upside down.
She thought about the tuition deposit.
The scholarship committee.
The months she had spent preparing for college.
She wondered how many nights she would have to work to rebuild the savings Jessica had taken.
Then David entered the kitchen carrying his phone.
“Jasmine, the committee has responded.””
She looked up immediately.
“What did they say?””
“They've acknowledged your statement and confirmed that your award hasn't been redirected. They need to complete their review of the disputed communications.””
Jasmine released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
“So I can still attend?””
“Your award remains active while the review proceeds. We'll continue working with them to make sure your enrollment plans are protected.””
She covered her mouth with one hand.
It wasn't a complete solution.
The money was still missing.
The questions about the financial agreements remained unanswered.
But she had not lost her chance to attend college.
For the first time in days, she allowed herself to hope.
Then David's phone rang.
The caller was the financial services company.
He answered and explained that he was present with Cameron, who had requested information about the agreement.
After the representative completed the required verification, Cameron took the phone.
He listened quietly.
Then he asked a question.
“Can you tell me whether my mother is listed as the person who arranged the agreement?””
A pause followed.
Cameron's expression changed.
He listened for another few seconds before saying, “I understand. Please send the complete documentation through the process you described.””
He ended the call.
David waited.
“What did they tell you?””
Cameron swallowed.
“They confirmed Mom was listed as the authorized contact who submitted the paperwork.””
Jasmine felt a chill spread through her chest.
David remained composed.
“That confirms her involvement in the arrangement. It doesn't establish the full purpose or whether any terms were misrepresented. We'll need the documents.””
Cameron nodded.
Then he looked at Jasmine.
“But there's something else.””
“What?””
“The representative said the second agreement wasn't connected to the basketball team.””
David slowly straightened.
“What was it connected to?””
Cameron shook his head.
“They couldn't disclose that until they finished verifying the records.””
Jasmine stared at him.
The basketball uniforms had been Jessica's first explanation.
The tournament expenses had been her second.
But the financial services company had now confirmed that at least one agreement was separate from basketball.
And the second agreement appeared to be connected to something else entirely.
David looked toward the staircase.
“Tomorrow, we'll review every document we can obtain. Until then, nobody signs anything, nobody moves money, and we don't make assumptions beyond the evidence.””
Cameron nodded.
Jasmine closed her textbook.
She had started this week believing that the hardest part of college would be balancing her classes with a part-time job.
Now she was trying to understand how the person who had lived under the same roof could take her scholarship, use her brother's information, and send messages that threatened her enrollment.
She looked at her father.
“Dad, what if the truth is worse than we think?””
David took her hand.
“Then we'll face the truth. But we won't let fear decide what happened before the evidence does.””
Upstairs, a door opened.
Jessica appeared at the top of the staircase.
She looked down at the three of them.
Her eyes settled on the folder beside David.
Then she spoke in a voice that barely carried across the room.
“You need to stop asking questions about that second agreement.””
David rose slowly.
“Why?””
Jessica gripped the railing.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “Because if you find out what I signed, you'll understand why I had no choice.””
Jasmine's heart began pounding.
David looked at his wife.
“You always had a choice about taking Jasmine's money.””
Jessica's eyes filled with tears.
“But you don't understand what will happen if that agreement is exposed.””
She turned and disappeared upstairs before anyone could ask another question.
David stood motionless.
Cameron looked at the letter.
Jasmine stared at the staircase.
And for the first time, all three of them understood that the missing scholarship was only the beginning.

Whatever Jessica had signed, she believed it was powerful enough to destroy the life she had spent years building.
Tomorrow, they would finally learn what it was.
