The Scholarship She Stole / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10: The Price of Her Choices

David Carter barely slept that night.

Jessica's final words kept returning to him.

Because if you find out what I signed, you'll understand why I had no choice.

He had spent years believing that marriage meant facing difficult circumstances together.

If Jessica had debts, he would have helped her make a plan.

If she had made a mistake, he would have expected her to admit it.

If she had been afraid, he would have listened.

But she had chosen to take Jasmine's scholarship, move money without permission, and contact the scholarship committee using statements that neither Jasmine nor David had authorized.

And now she was suggesting that another agreement explained everything.

At seven the next morning, David found Jasmine sitting at the dining table with her textbooks open.

She hadn't turned a page in nearly an hour.

“Couldn't sleep?”” he asked.

She shook her head.

“I keep thinking about the tuition deposit.””

David pulled out a chair.

“Your enrollment is still being reviewed alongside the disputed scholarship messages. We're going to contact the college today and explain the situation.””

“What if they won't wait?””

“Then we'll discuss the options they can offer. I won't let you face this alone.””

Jasmine looked down at her hands.

“I don't want you to pay for everything because Jessica took my money.””

David felt a familiar ache in his chest.

“You earned that scholarship. You shouldn't have to feel guilty because someone else made a decision without your permission.””

“But if you pay the deposit, it means she wins. She gets to spend the money, and you have to fix everything.””

“No,” David said firmly.

“It means I'm protecting your opportunity to attend college. What happens with Jessica is a separate matter.””

Jasmine swallowed.

She wanted to believe him.

Then Cameron entered the kitchen carrying a thick envelope.

“The company emailed me,” he said.

David stood.

“Did they send the agreements?””

Cameron nodded.

“Both of them.””

He placed the envelope on the table and opened it.

Inside were copies of the financial documents, transaction references, and a formal explanation of the company's role in the arrangements.

David read the first agreement carefully.

It confirmed that Cameron had signed a document authorizing a limited financial arrangement.

However, the paperwork did not establish that Cameron had knowingly agreed to use Jasmine's scholarship or understood every transaction associated with the arrangement.

The second agreement was different.

Jessica had authorized a separate financial arrangement in her own name.

It involved a repayment obligation connected to a personal debt.

David read the relevant section twice.

Then he looked at Cameron.

“This confirms that your mother entered into a separate arrangement. We'll need to review the terms carefully before drawing conclusions about what she owed or why she made the payments.””

Cameron nodded.

“Does it say how much?””

David turned to the repayment schedule.

The documents identified an outstanding obligation that had required several payments over the preceding weeks.

Some of the transaction references matched the unexplained transfers from Jasmine's account.

Others required further verification.

David placed the papers side by side.

The $875 transfer.

The $1,600 transfer.

The $2,400 transfer that had appeared in Cameron's account.

The $4,800 tournament deposit.

And the $2,750 payment to the financial services company.

The amounts did not all represent the same expense, but the records established that Jessica had used money from Jasmine's account for purposes beyond the basketball uniforms.

David looked at Jasmine.

“We now have documentation that some of the money went toward a separate financial obligation. The bank still needs to complete its review of the disputed transfers, but we finally have a clearer picture.””

Jasmine stared at the papers.

“So the uniforms weren't the whole story.””

“No.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Did she ever intend to tell us?””

David didn't answer.

He couldn't know what Jessica had intended.

But he knew what she had actually done.

She had spent the money.

She had concealed the other transfers.

She had tried to redirect Jasmine's scholarship.

And she had asked Cameron to trust documents he hadn't fully understood.

Those facts were enough.

At nine, David asked Jessica to join them in the living room.

She appeared wearing a pale blue blouse, her hair neatly arranged, and her diamond bracelet still shining on her wrist.

She looked from David to the documents spread across the coffee table.

Then she stopped.

“You got the agreements.””

“Yes,” David replied.

Jessica sat down slowly.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then David placed the documents in front of her.

“Explain the separate financial obligation.””

Jessica stared at the pages.

“I told you I was dealing with a difficult situation.””

“You told us you spent Jasmine's scholarship on basketball uniforms. You didn't tell us that you had used some of the money for a separate financial obligation.””

“I intended to replace it.””

“From what source?””

“My income.””

“When?””

Jessica rubbed her forehead.

“I don't know.””

David leaned forward.

“Did you have a repayment plan?””

“I thought I could manage it.””

“Did you tell Jasmine you were borrowing her money?””

“No.””

“Did you ask her permission?””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

David nodded slowly.

“Then we agree on the essential facts.””

Jessica looked up.

“You make it sound so simple.””

“It isn't simple. It's just clear.””

She began to cry.

“I was under pressure, David. I was trying to keep everything from falling apart.””

“What was falling apart?””

Jessica pressed a tissue against her face.

“I had bills I couldn't keep up with. I made commitments because I believed I could handle them. Then everything became more expensive, and I couldn't make the payments.””

David listened without interrupting.

Jessica continued.

“I thought I could borrow from the account, replace the money after I received my next payments, and nobody would ever know.””

Jasmine felt her throat tighten.

“You knew I needed that money.””

Jessica looked at her.

“I know.””

“You knew the tuition deadline was coming.””

“I know.””

“You knew I worked for months to earn the scholarship.””

Jessica lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

Jasmine stood.

“Then why did you do it?””

Jessica began to sob.

“Because I was desperate!””

The word echoed through the living room.

For a moment, Jasmine felt something close to pity.

Then she remembered the empty account.

The scholarship committee's emails.

The way Jessica had told her to take out a loan.

And the message Jessica had sent Cameron, warning him not to tell David anything else.

Jasmine's voice trembled.

“You could have told Dad you were in trouble. You could have asked for help. You could have sold your own jewelry. You could have told the basketball parents you couldn't afford the uniforms.””

Jessica shook her head.

“I was ashamed.””

“So you made me pay for your shame?””

Jessica covered her face.

No answer came.

David waited until the room grew quiet again.

“Jessica, the bank is reviewing the transactions. The scholarship committee has been informed that the withdrawal messages were unauthorized. We will cooperate with the appropriate processes, and we will not conceal any records.””

Jessica looked up sharply.

“You're going to report me?””

“We're going to provide accurate information when requested. I'm not going to lie about what happened.””

“You're my husband!””

“And Jasmine is my daughter. You don't get to take away her future and then demand that I protect you from the consequences.””

Jessica stared at him.

For years, David had softened disagreements to preserve peace.

He had paid unexpected bills without asking too many questions.

He had accepted explanations that seemed plausible because he wanted to trust his wife.

But trust could not survive if one person treated another person's sacrifice as an unlimited resource.

“I'll repay the money,” Jessica whispered.

David nodded.

“Then we'll need a written repayment plan based on what you can realistically afford, along with a clear accounting of the disputed transactions.””

“And the jewelry?””

“We'll discuss how the money will be replaced. Your belongings aren't the only possible source, but Jasmine cannot be left carrying the loss.””

Jessica looked at the bracelet on her wrist.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the jewelry she had worn so confidently during the argument could no longer protect her from the truth.

Cameron spoke quietly from the armchair.

“Mom, I need to know something.””

Jessica turned toward him.

“What?””

“Did you know I was signing a financial agreement?””

“I gave you the document.””

“You told me it was a routine form.””

“It was related to the financial arrangement.””

“Did you tell me it had anything to do with your debt?””

Jessica looked away.

“No.””

Cameron swallowed.

“Did you use the money that went into my account to pay for something else?””

Jessica hesitated.

“The money was intended to cover your training expenses.””

“But some of it came from Jasmine.””

“Yes.””

Cameron lowered his head.

He had spent part of the money believing it was his mother's savings.

He had not known it came from Jasmine's account.

But the realization still hurt.

“I don't want anything that came from her scholarship,” he said.

Jasmine looked at him.

“You didn't know.””

“Maybe not. But I don't want to benefit from something that hurt you.””

David placed a hand on Cameron's shoulder.

“We'll document the money you received and work out the appropriate steps. You don't need to make promises before we understand every transaction.””

Cameron nodded.

Jessica looked between her children.

For the first time, neither of them was asking her for an explanation that would make everything feel normal again.

They were asking her to accept responsibility.

And she had no answer that could restore what she had broken.

Later that afternoon, David and Jasmine contacted the college.

They explained that Jasmine's scholarship remained active while the committee reviewed the unauthorized communications.

They also explained that the missing funds had created an immediate difficulty with the tuition deposit.

The college representative reviewed the situation and outlined the available administrative options, including the process for requesting additional time while the scholarship matter was resolved.

David helped Jasmine submit the necessary documentation.

He also arranged to cover the immediate deposit so that she wouldn't lose her enrollment opportunity while the financial dispute continued.

Jasmine watched him complete the payment.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Dad, I'll pay you back when I can.””

He turned toward her.

“You don't owe me an apology for accepting help.””

“But I wanted to do this myself.””

“And you still will. You earned your place at that college. One bad situation doesn't erase everything you've worked for.””

Jasmine hugged him.

For the first time since Jessica had admitted spending the scholarship, the tightness in her chest began to ease.

Her future wasn't entirely secure yet.

The bank's review was ongoing.

The disputed transfers still needed to be reconciled.

And Jessica would have to follow through on whatever repayment arrangement was ultimately established.

But Jasmine's college plans were moving forward.

That evening, she packed her textbooks into a box and placed her scholarship award letter inside a folder.

She didn't want to forget how proud she had felt when it arrived.

She also didn't want the memory of what Jessica had done to become the only thing she remembered about that achievement.

Cameron knocked on her bedroom door.

“Can I come in?””

Jasmine nodded.

He entered carrying a small envelope.

“What's that?”” she asked.

“Money from my savings.””

He placed it on her desk.

“It's not enough to replace what Mom took. But it's money I have, and I want to contribute toward what I spent without knowing where it came from.””

Jasmine stared at the envelope.

“You don't have to do that.””

“I know.””

Cameron looked down.

“I just want to make it right where I can.””

Jasmine felt tears gather in her eyes.

She reached for his hand.

“Thank you.””

He nodded.

Then he added, “I'm going to talk to the coach about the uniforms, too. I don't know whether anything can be returned, but I don't want anyone pretending the team needed all of that equipment if it meant taking money from you.””

Jasmine squeezed his hand.

“Just make sure you understand what you're agreeing to before you sign anything.””

Cameron gave a small, sad smile.

“I will.””

After he left, Jasmine sat alone for several minutes.

She thought about the girl who had written scholarship essays during lunch breaks.

The girl who had worked evening shifts and studied until her eyes burned.

The girl who had cried in her father's arms when she finally received the acceptance letter.

Jessica had taken $18,600.

She had created confusion, fear, and uncertainty.

But she had not erased the years of work that had earned Jasmine the award.

She had not erased Jasmine's intelligence.

She had not erased her determination.

And she had not erased the fact that Jasmine deserved to build a future of her own.

Downstairs, David was reviewing the final list of disputed transactions with the bank's documentation.

Jessica had agreed to provide the remaining records and discuss a realistic repayment plan.

The bank's review would continue, and any further questions about the unauthorized transactions would be handled through the appropriate channels.

David had also made it clear that Jasmine's account would remain under her control.

No more unexplained transfers.

No more decisions made in her name.

No more pretending that family loyalty required silence.

When David finally entered the kitchen, he found Jessica sitting alone at the table.

Her diamond bracelet lay beside her phone.

She looked up at him.

“Do you think you'll ever forgive me?””

David pulled out a chair but didn't sit immediately.

“Forgiveness isn't something I can promise tonight.””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

“I love this family.””

“Then you need to understand what love requires.””

He sat across from her.

“It requires honesty. It requires respecting boundaries. And it requires accepting responsibility when you've hurt someone.””

Jessica looked down at the bracelet.

“I never thought it would go this far.””

David's voice softened.

“Neither did Jasmine when she trusted you with her future.””

Jessica began to cry again.

This time, David didn't reach across the table to comfort her.

He allowed her to feel the weight of what had happened.

Because the most important thing he could do now wasn't to rescue Jessica from her shame.

It was to make sure Jasmine never had to sacrifice her future to protect another person's secrets.

Six days earlier, Jasmine had stood in the living room holding an empty envelope.

She had believed that her dream of attending college had been taken from her.

Now her tuition deposit was secured, her scholarship remained active pending the committee's review, and the disputed transactions were being documented.

There would be more difficult conversations.

There would be financial consequences.

And the family would need time to decide what trust could be rebuilt.

But Jasmine had something Jessica could never take away.

The knowledge that she had earned her future herself.

And as she prepared for the next chapter of her life, she finally understood that protecting her dreams did not make her selfish.

It made her brave.
