The Scholarship She Stole / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Company Behind Her Perfect Life

David Carter had seen his wife frightened before.

He had seen her panic over unexpected bills, become defensive when questioned about expensive purchases, and grow unusually quiet whenever a conversation turned toward money.

But he had never seen Jessica look at a piece of paper as though it might destroy her entire life.

Until now.

“What does that company have to do with our house?”” David asked again.

Jessica stood halfway up the staircase, gripping the railing.

“Nothing.””

“Then why did Cameron recognize the name?””

“Because I mentioned it once.””

“You said it was helping you with the house,” Cameron replied.

“You told me it was some kind of financial service.””

Jessica shot him a furious look.

“Why are you repeating everything I say?””

“Because I don't understand what's happening!””

David placed his phone on the coffee table.

“Jessica, we have a receipt showing that $2,750 went to a company that isn't the tournament organizer. That payment appears on a document connected to the basketball expenses you charged against Jasmine's money.””

He paused.

“I'm asking you to explain it.””

Jessica descended two steps.

“It was an administrative expense.””

“For the tournament?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Cameron think the company was helping with the house?””

Jessica's lips tightened.

For several seconds, she appeared to be searching for an explanation that would satisfy everyone.

Finally, she said, “The company handles several kinds of services. I don't remember exactly what the payment was for.””

David stared at her.

“You don't remember paying $2,750?””

“I handle a lot of things in this household!””

“Then show us the invoice.””

“I don't have it.””

“Where is it?””

“I said I don't have it!””

Cameron looked at his mother with an expression Jasmine had never seen on his face before.

Disappointment.

“Mom, why can't you just tell us the truth?””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained sharp.

“Because nobody in this house seems interested in understanding what I've been dealing with!””

David didn't raise his voice.

“Then help us understand.””

Jessica turned away.

“I need to make a phone call.””

She hurried upstairs before anyone could stop her.

A bedroom door closed.

Jasmine sat down slowly.

She had imagined that finding the receipt would answer the remaining questions.

Instead, every answer seemed to open another door.

“Dad,” she whispered, “what if the money wasn't just spent on the team?””

David sat beside her.

“Then we'll establish where it went.””

“What if she used it to pay her own bills?””

“We'll establish that, too.””

“And what if there's more?””

David looked at the thick folder on the coffee table.

“Then we'll keep documenting the facts until we know the full amount.””

Jasmine nodded, but her stomach remained knotted.

She was beginning to understand that the scholarship was only one piece of a much larger financial problem.

The next morning, David contacted the company listed on the receipt using publicly available contact information.

He didn't make accusations.

He simply asked whether the company had issued the invoice and whether it could confirm the nature of the payment to an authorized party.

The representative explained that the company couldn't disclose another customer's private financial information without the appropriate authorization.

David understood.

He requested the available documentation from the bank and made a note to ask Jessica for the original invoice.

Then he contacted the scholarship committee again.

Jasmine's written statement had been received, and the committee confirmed that her award had not been redirected.

The request to withdraw the scholarship remained under review.

For the first time in days, Jasmine felt a small measure of relief.

Her future was still uncertain, but at least the committee had heard her side.

That afternoon, the family gathered in the living room.

Jessica had spent the morning avoiding everyone.

Now she appeared composed again, wearing a cream blouse, pearl earrings, and the diamond bracelet that had become an unwelcome symbol of the entire situation.

David placed a document on the coffee table.

“I need the original invoice for the $2,750 payment.””

Jessica glanced at it.

“I already explained that it was an administrative expense.””

“You explained that you didn't remember what it was for.””

“I was upset.””

“Then look at the invoice and tell us.””

Jessica sat down.

For a moment, she seemed almost willing to cooperate.

Then she noticed the bank statements beside the document.

Her expression hardened.

“Why have you printed all of these?””

“Because we need a clear record of the transactions.””

“You've spent days examining every cent that leaves an account.””

“Jasmine's account.””

Jessica looked at her stepdaughter.

“You really enjoy watching me suffer, don't you?””

Jasmine stared at her.

“No. I want my scholarship back.””

“Your father has money. He can pay your tuition.””

David's expression changed.

“That's not the point.””

“Why not? You're making this into a crisis when you could simply write a check.””

“Because the money was earned by Jasmine, and you had no right to take it.””

Jessica gave a bitter laugh.

“So now I'm supposed to sell everything I own?””

“You agreed that the scholarship should be replaced. We haven't yet decided how that will happen.””

“You threatened to sell my jewelry!””

“I said the money had to be replaced. If you have a better proposal, present it.””

Jessica stared at him.

Then she turned toward Jasmine.

“Would you really let your father sell my belongings?””

Jasmine felt her throat tighten.

“I didn't ask you to spend my scholarship.””

“You could have been more understanding.””

“Understanding what? That I should lose my future so Cameron could have matching shoes?””

Cameron, sitting near the window, finally spoke.

“Mom, stop bringing me into this.””

Jessica looked at him in disbelief.

“I'm your mother!””

“And Jasmine is my sister.””

The word seemed to strike Jessica harder than anything else he had said.

For years, she had emphasized the difference between her son and David's daughter whenever family disagreements arose.

Cameron had often ignored those distinctions.

Now he was making his position unmistakable.

David returned his attention to Jessica.

“The invoice.””

With visible reluctance, she opened her handbag and removed a folded document.

She placed it on the table.

David read the heading.

The company name matched the receipt.

The invoice described a service related to a private financial arrangement.

It did not mention basketball equipment, uniforms, travel, or tournament administration.

David read the document again.

Then he looked at Jessica.

“This has nothing to do with Cameron's team.””

Jessica's face drained of color.

“It was a separate expense.””

“Then why was it included with the tournament receipt?””

“Because I put the documents together.””

“Why?””

“I don't remember!””

David lowered the paper.

“Jessica, you told me you spent Jasmine's scholarship on basketball uniforms and related team expenses. Now we have a payment to a financial services company, and you can't explain why it appears on the same documentation.””

Jessica stood abruptly.

“I don't have to sit here while you accuse me of things!””

David remained seated.

“I'm asking you to explain a document you provided.””

She snatched the invoice from the table.

“You're twisting everything!””

Jasmine watched her stepmother clutch the paper.

“Did you use my money to pay a debt?””

Jessica's eyes darted toward her.

“No.””

“Then what was the payment for?””

“I said it was separate!””

“Separate from what?””

Jessica didn't answer.

Cameron stood.

“Mom, did you use Jasmine's scholarship to pay something you owed?””

Jessica turned on him.

“You have no idea what you're talking about!””

“Then explain it!””

“Enough!””

Her voice cracked through the room.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Jessica lowered her voice.

“I had a temporary financial difficulty. I intended to resolve it before anyone was affected.””

David looked at the invoice.

“What financial difficulty?””

“It's private.””

“You used money belonging to Jasmine. That makes the transaction relevant.””

Jessica pressed her lips together.

David didn't push further.

Instead, he gathered the documents and placed them in the folder.

“We'll continue through the bank's review. If there's a legitimate explanation for the payment, the records should help establish it.””

Jessica stared at him.

“You would really involve outside people in our marriage?””

“You involved Jasmine's scholarship committee when you sent a message in her name. You involved the bank when you moved money without her permission. Those are the facts.””

He stood.

“I'm not going to hide the evidence because you're embarrassed.””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

But Jasmine noticed something strange.

Even as Jessica cried, she kept glancing at her handbag.

Not at the jewelry.

Not at David.

At the handbag.

As if something inside it frightened her more than the documents on the table.

That evening, after Jessica went upstairs, Cameron approached Jasmine in the kitchen.

“I need to tell you something.””

Jasmine looked up from the cup of tea she hadn't touched.

“What?””

“Last month, Mom asked me to sign a document.””

Jasmine's fingers tightened around the cup.

“What document?””

“She said it was a form confirming that she was paying my basketball expenses. I didn't read all of it. I just signed where she pointed.””

“Do you remember what it said?””

“Not exactly.””

Cameron looked toward the staircase.

“She told me not to mention it to Dad because she didn't want him worrying about money.””

Jasmine felt a cold sensation spread through her chest.

“Did the document have the company name on it?””

“I think so.””

“Why didn't you tell us earlier?””

“Because I didn't think it mattered. I thought it was just a form for the team.””

Jasmine set down her cup.

“Cameron, if that document involved money from my account, we need to know what it was.””

“I know.””

He looked miserable.

“I can try to find a copy in my email.””

“Please do.””

Cameron took out his phone and searched his messages.

Several minutes passed.

Then he stopped scrolling.

“I found something.””

Jasmine leaned closer.

It was an email from Jessica, sent weeks earlier.

The subject line read: *Please sign this before Friday.*

Attached was a document from the same financial services company.

Cameron opened the preview.

His face changed.

“Jasmine,” he whispered, “I think Mom used my name on something I never understood.””

Before Jasmine could read the full document, footsteps sounded behind them.

Jessica stood in the kitchen doorway.

Her eyes fixed on Cameron's phone.

“Give me that.””

Cameron instinctively stepped back.

“No.””

Jessica's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Cameron, give me the phone.””

David appeared behind her.

“What is going on?””

Jessica looked at her husband, then at the email on Cameron's screen.

For the first time, she seemed unable to control the expression on her face.

And David realized that the unexplained payment might be connected to a document involving both children.

A document Jessica had desperately hoped they would never find.
