The Scholarship She Stole / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Message Sent in Her Name

The scholarship committee's email contained one sentence that made Jasmine feel as if the floor had disappeared beneath her.

Please confirm whether you authorized the withdrawal request submitted on your behalf.

She read it again.

Then she looked at her father.

“Dad, if they think I gave up the scholarship, will they give it to somebody else?””

David pulled a chair beside her.

“We're going to contact them immediately. You didn't withdraw anything, and we'll make sure they know that.””

“But what if they already believe it?””

“Then we'll provide the facts.””

Jasmine pressed her palms against her eyes.

She had spent months convincing herself she could make college work.

She had worked through exhaustion.

She had skipped birthday dinners and weekend trips because every dollar mattered.

When the scholarship arrived, she had finally allowed herself to imagine walking onto campus without calculating the cost of every textbook.

Now she was afraid the committee might believe she had thrown away the opportunity herself.

Behind them, Jessica paced near the fireplace.

“I didn't tell them she was quitting,” she muttered.

David turned.

“What exactly did you tell them?””

Jessica stopped.

“I sent an inquiry.””

“What kind of inquiry?””

“I asked whether the award could be redirected if Jasmine wasn't going to attend.””

Jasmine stared at her.

“But I am going to attend!””

“You were struggling to pay for everything else.””

“Because you took my money!””

Jessica threw up her hands.

“I was trying to prevent the situation from getting worse!””

“How could taking away my scholarship prevent anything?””

Jessica's expression hardened.

“Because Cameron needed the equipment, and the family couldn't afford everything at once.””

David stepped forward.

“Stop using Cameron as an excuse. He didn't ask you to steal Jasmine's scholarship.””

Jessica's eyes flashed.

“You keep calling it stealing.””

“What else would you call moving money without permission and contacting the scholarship committee in her name?””

“I was trying to help.””

“Then why did you say she had withdrawn?””

Jessica looked away.

No answer came.

David returned to Jasmine.

“Let's call the committee.””

He helped her locate the official contact information on the scholarship award letter.

Jasmine dialed with trembling fingers.

After several minutes, a representative answered and asked for her name and award reference number.

Jasmine explained that she had not requested a withdrawal and had not authorized anyone to change the scholarship.

The representative listened carefully.

“Thank you for notifying us,” she said.

“We received a message asking about redirecting the award. We have not finalized any change, but we need to verify the request before we proceed.””

Jasmine closed her eyes in relief.

“So the scholarship hasn't been given away?””

“Not at this point. We'll place the request under review while we verify your intentions.””

“Thank you,” Jasmine whispered.

David took the phone when Jasmine began to cry again.

He explained that there was a dispute involving access to her financial account and that they were preserving the relevant records.

The representative instructed them to submit a written statement confirming that Jasmine intended to remain enrolled and had not authorized the withdrawal.

They thanked her and ended the call.

For a few seconds, the living room was silent.

Then Jasmine hugged her father.

“I thought I'd lost everything.””

“You haven't lost your chance to go to college,” David told her.

“But the money is still gone.””

“I know.””

“And my savings.””

“I know.””

He held her close.

“We'll address one problem at a time.””

Across the room, Jessica let out an impatient breath.

“Can we please stop acting like I'm some kind of monster?””

David released Jasmine and faced his wife.

“Then help us understand what happened.””

Jessica folded her arms.

“I already explained it.””

“No. You've explained why you think Cameron needed new uniforms. You haven't explained why you moved Jasmine's savings, why you sent money to another account, or why you contacted the scholarship committee.””

“Those transfers were temporary.””

“Then show us where the money went.””

Jessica's face tightened.

“I can't do that right now.””

“Why not?””

“Because I have things to take care of!””

David stared at her.

“More important than explaining where $18,600 went?””

Jessica turned away.

Jasmine watched her stepmother's expression shift between anger and anxiety.

It was the same look Jessica wore whenever David asked about an unexpected bill or a purchase that appeared on their joint statements.

Jasmine had never paid much attention to it before.

She had assumed adults handled money differently.

She had assumed that because her father trusted Jessica, she could trust her, too.

Now she wondered how many things she had failed to notice.

“Dad,” she said quietly, “can we look at the other transactions again?””

David nodded.

They returned to the dining table.

Jasmine organized the records by date.

The first unexplained transfer had occurred almost a month before her scholarship arrived.

It was for $875.

The next was $1,600.

Then came $2,400.

After that, there were smaller payments spread across several weeks.

The scholarship deposit had entered the account later.

Within days, Jessica had moved most of it.

The basketball purchases accounted for a significant portion, but the remaining transfers still needed explanations.

David wrote down each amount.

He didn't accuse Jessica of anything beyond what the records showed.

But as the list grew, his expression became more troubled.

“Have you ever given Jessica your online banking password?”” he asked.

Jasmine hesitated.

“She helped me set up the account notifications when I first opened it. I might have logged in on her tablet once.””

“Did she know your password?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you authorize her to make transfers?””

“No.””

David nodded.

“That's important. We'll document it.””

Jessica approached the table.

“Are you seriously making a list of every transaction in my house?””

“I'm making a record of money that disappeared from Jasmine's account.””

“This is humiliating.””

Jasmine looked up.

“You're worried about being embarrassed?””

Jessica glared at her.

“Don't twist my words.””

“You spent the money I worked for, and now you're angry because we're trying to find it.””

David placed his pen down.

“Jessica, I need you to understand something. This is no longer about whether I agree with your spending decisions. It's about whether Jasmine authorized these transactions.””

Jessica's voice dropped.

“You're my husband.””

“And she's my daughter.””

“You're supposed to stand by your wife.””

“Being your husband doesn't mean I stop being her father.””

Jessica looked at him as though he had betrayed her.

Then she turned toward Jasmine.

“You've always wanted to come between us.””

Jasmine stared at her in disbelief.

“I wanted to go to college.””

“You've always had everything handed to you.””

“I worked for that scholarship!””

“And Cameron has worked hard, too!””

“Then why didn't you help him find his own funding?””

Jessica went silent.

The question hung in the room.

David slowly turned toward her.

“That's a fair question.””

Jessica's cheeks flushed.

“Cameron's situation is different.””

“How?””

“He needs support!””

“So does Jasmine.””

“Jasmine is smart. She can find another scholarship.””

David's expression became colder.

“She already did. That's what you spent.””

Jessica looked away.

For the first time, she seemed unable to find a response that would make her sound reasonable.

David stood and picked up his phone.

“I need to contact the bank again and follow their instructions. Jasmine, save copies of every statement and email.””

Jasmine nodded.

Jessica watched him move toward the hallway.

“Where are you going?””

“To make sure the remaining funds are protected.””

“There isn't anything left!””

“Then there should be no reason for you to object.””

He walked away.

Jessica remained by the dining table, staring at the records.

Jasmine continued sorting the transactions.

A few minutes later, she found a payment description she hadn't noticed before.

It wasn't labeled as a household expense.

It wasn't connected to basketball.

It was a transfer to an account with the same masked ending she had seen earlier.

But this time, the description included a reference number.

Jasmine searched the transaction history for the number.

Three matching entries appeared.

Together, they accounted for several thousand dollars.

She copied the reference into the bank's transaction details.

The screen displayed a recipient category she didn't recognize.

Her stomach tightened.

“Jessica?””

Her stepmother looked up sharply.

“What?””

“Who owns this account?””

Jessica's eyes moved to the screen.

Then she looked at Jasmine.

“That's none of your business.””

Jasmine felt a chill run down her spine.

“It came from my account. It is my business.””

Jessica reached for the laptop.

Jasmine pulled it away.

“Don't touch it!””

The raised voices brought David back into the room.

“What happened?””

Jasmine pointed at the screen.

“These transfers all went to the same account. Jessica won't tell me who owns it.””

David leaned closer.

He examined the details, then looked at his wife.

“Whose account is this?””

Jessica's mouth tightened.

“I don't owe you an explanation every time money moves.””

“You owe Jasmine an explanation when her money moves.””

For several seconds, Jessica said nothing.

Then she made a mistake.

She glanced toward the hallway leading to Cameron's room.

It was only a quick movement.

But David noticed.

So did Jasmine.

“Dad,” Jasmine whispered, “why would she look at Cameron's room?””

David didn't answer immediately.

He returned his attention to the transaction details and wrote down the reference number.

Then he looked at Jessica.

“Is Cameron involved in these transfers?””

“No!””

The answer came too quickly.

David held her gaze.

“Then you should have no problem helping us establish that.””

Jessica's face lost color.

She backed away from the table.

“You're turning this into something it isn't.””

“Then tell us what it is.””

“I can't.””

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

Jasmine went completely still.

David's expression changed.

“What do you mean, you can't?””

Jessica pressed her lips together.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the faint hum of the refrigerator.

Then David spoke in a voice Jasmine had never heard him use with his wife.

“Tomorrow morning, we're going to get the complete transaction records. Until we understand what happened, you will not have access to Jasmine's account or any money belonging to her.””

Jessica stared at him.

“You can't do that to me.””

“I can protect my daughter's finances while this is investigated.””

“You're choosing her over me!””

David didn't blink.

“I'm choosing the truth over another excuse.””

Jessica's hands began to tremble.

She looked at Jasmine, then at the laptop, then toward the hallway again.

And Jasmine finally understood that the basketball uniforms might have been only the part of the story Jessica was willing to admit.

Because if the other transfers had nothing to do with Cameron, why was Jessica so afraid of them finding out who had received the money?

And what, exactly, was she trying to keep her husband from discovering?
