Chapter 2: The Account Nobody Discussed
David had spent twenty-two years building a life where his children would never have to beg for the opportunities he had struggled to obtain.
He had worked late nights, accepted difficult assignments, and saved carefully because he wanted Jasmine and Cameron to have choices.
But standing in his living room, watching Jessica smile while Jasmine trembled beside him, he began to wonder whether his generosity had made him blind.
“What do you mean, I should ask Jasmine where the money was kept?”” David demanded.
Jessica picked up her phone.
“Nothing. Forget I said anything.””
“No.””
His voice stopped her.
“You brought it up. Now explain.””
Jessica glanced at Jasmine.
Then she sighed dramatically.
“Your daughter has been acting as if that scholarship belongs to her alone. I'm simply reminding you that she agreed to let me help manage her finances.””
Jasmine pulled away from her father.
“I never agreed to that.””
“You gave me access to the household account.””
“Because Dad said you could help me organize the bills while I was preparing for college!””
“Exactly,” Jessica replied.
“You trusted me.””
“That doesn't mean you could spend the money!””
David raised his hand.
“Enough word games. Jasmine, where was the scholarship deposited?””
“Into the account I gave the scholarship committee. Dad helped me open it because I needed somewhere to receive the award.””
David nodded slowly.
He remembered the process.
The scholarship organization had requested bank details, and he had accompanied Jasmine to arrange the account.
He had insisted that she learn how to manage her own money.
He remembered the proud look on her face when she received her first account statement.
He also remembered Jessica offering to help with household budgeting while Jasmine prepared for college.
At the time, it had seemed harmless.
Now he wasn't so sure.
“Was the account in your name?”” he asked Jasmine.
“Yes.””
“Did you give Jessica permission to transfer money out of it?””
“No, Dad. I didn't even know she had access until she told me she used the scholarship.””
Jessica crossed her arms.
“You're making this sound much worse than it is.””
David turned toward her.
“Then show me the transaction.””
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
“Why?””
“Because I want to know where the money went.””
“I already told you. Basketball uniforms.””
“Then it shouldn't be difficult to show me the receipt.””
Jessica looked toward the hallway.
For the first time that evening, she appeared to be searching for an escape.
Jasmine noticed.
So did David.
“Jessica,” he said, “show me the receipt.””
She unlocked her phone, tapped the screen several times, and held it out.
David took it.
The first transaction was for $6,400.
The description mentioned team apparel.
The second was for $4,200.
The third was for $3,150.
Additional charges brought the total close to the full scholarship amount.
But something didn't add up.
David scrolled through the records again.
“Why are there two payments to the same vendor on different dates?””
Jessica shrugged.
“Different orders.””
“And why is one payment listed as a personal transfer?””
Her face tightened.
“That was a reimbursement.””
“For what?””
“For expenses I covered.””
“With what money?””
Jessica snatched the phone back.
“I don't have to explain every transaction to you!””
“You absolutely do when the money belongs to my daughter.””
Jasmine stood very still.
Her stomach twisted as she listened.
She had imagined losing the scholarship would mean months of extra work, difficult conversations with the college, and perhaps delaying her education.
She had never imagined the money might have been moved around before Jessica admitted spending it.
“Dad,” she whispered, “does that mean she took more than the scholarship?””
David turned to her.
“I don't know yet.””
Jessica immediately seized on the uncertainty.
“See? Even he doesn't know. You're both accusing me without understanding the situation.””
David ignored her.
He handed Jasmine the phone.
“Can you log in to your bank account?””
She nodded and reached for her laptop on the dining table.
Her hands were shaking so badly that she mistyped her password twice.
David stood beside her while the account page loaded.
The balance appeared.
Jasmine stared at the screen.
“No.””
She refreshed the page.
Then she refreshed it again.
The number remained unchanged.
“Dad,” she whispered, “the money is gone.””
“I know, sweetheart.””
“No, I mean everything. The scholarship deposit. My savings. All of it.””
David leaned closer.
Jasmine had saved $1,240 from her grocery store shifts.
She had planned to use that money for transportation, meals, and other expenses her scholarship wouldn't cover.
Now the account showed a balance of only $37.18.
David's jaw tightened.
He looked at the transaction history.
Several transfers had been made over the preceding weeks.
Some were labeled as household expenses.
Others had been sent to an account with a name he didn't recognize.
The scholarship payment had been the largest transaction, but it wasn't the only one.
“Jessica,” he said carefully, “what are these transfers?””
She leaned against the fireplace.
“I told you. Household expenses.””
“Why were Jasmine's savings used for household expenses?””
“Because things were tight.””
David stared at her.
“Things were tight?””
Jessica gestured toward the room.
“Don't act as if we live in a world where money grows on trees. The mortgage is expensive. The bills are expensive.
Cameron has activities. Everyone needs something.””
Jasmine looked up from the laptop.
“I paid for my own phone. I bought my own clothes. I worked to save that money.””
“And I never stopped you,” Jessica snapped.
“You didn't have to! I was trying to be responsible!””
Jessica's eyes flashed.
“You should be grateful I helped keep this family running.””
David took a slow breath.
“Did you transfer Jasmine's savings into your own account?””
“No.””
He pointed at the screen.
“Then explain the account number listed here.””
Jessica looked at the laptop.
Her silence lasted only a few seconds, but it told David more than her earlier explanations had.
Finally, she said, “I moved some money temporarily.””
“How much?””
“I don't remember.””
“Look at the transactions.””
“I said I don't remember!””
David's voice sharpened.
“Then we'll find out.””
He reached for his own phone.
Jessica straightened.
“What are you doing?””
“Calling the bank.””
Her expression changed immediately.
“David, don't be ridiculous.””
“I want the account access reviewed, the transactions documented, and any remaining funds protected.””
“You're going to involve strangers in a family disagreement?””
“This stopped being a family disagreement when you emptied Jasmine's account.””
Jessica stepped toward him.
“You're going to destroy this family over money?””
David looked at his daughter.
At the young woman who had worked evenings while other students went out with friends.
At the girl who had once told him she didn't need expensive things because she wanted to pay her own way through college.
Then he looked back at Jessica.
“No,” he said.
“I'm trying to protect the part of this family you decided didn't matter.””
He called the bank and requested assistance reviewing the account activity.
While he waited, Jasmine downloaded the available statements.
She found the scholarship deposit.
She found the payments for basketball equipment.
Then she found several transfers that had nothing to do with either.
One was for $875.
Another was for $1,600.
A third was for $2,400.
The recipient details were partially masked, but the same last four digits appeared repeatedly.
Jasmine frowned.
“Dad, look at this.””
David leaned over her shoulder.
“Do you recognize that account?””
“No.””
Jessica moved toward them.
“Give me the laptop.””
Jasmine instinctively pulled it closer to herself.
“No.””
“Jasmine, I need to check something.””
“You've checked enough!””
Jessica's face reddened.
“How dare you speak to me like that?””
David stepped between them.
“Don't touch her or her computer.””
Jessica froze.
For years, David had been the one who softened disagreements.
He had persuaded Jasmine to be patient when Jessica criticized her clothes.
He had encouraged Cameron to share family responsibilities.
He had explained away Jessica's temper as stress.
But something had changed.
The woman in front of him wasn't simply defending a mistake.
She was trying to stop them from looking.
And David had spent enough years managing budgets to recognize the difference between a financial problem and someone hiding a financial problem.
The bank representative finally answered.
David explained the situation, confirmed the account details, and asked what documentation would be needed to investigate the unauthorized transactions.
He didn't make accusations beyond what he could support.
He didn't threaten anyone.
He simply asked for records and next steps.
When the call ended, he looked at Jasmine.
“We're going to document everything. We'll find out exactly what happened.””
Jasmine nodded, though her eyes remained fixed on the screen.
Then another notification appeared.
It was an email from the scholarship committee.
The subject line read: *Urgent Verification of Award Funds.*
Jasmine opened it.
Her face went pale.
“Dad?””
“What is it?””
She turned the laptop toward him.
The committee had received a message claiming that Jasmine had voluntarily withdrawn from college and requested that her scholarship be redirected to another student.
The message had been sent using contact information associated with their household.
Jasmine shook her head.
“I never sent this.””
David read the email twice.
Then he turned slowly toward Jessica.
“Did you contact the scholarship committee?””
Jessica's lips parted.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “I was trying to solve a problem.””
David's eyes hardened.
“What problem?””
May you like
Jessica looked at the laptop.
And for the first time, she seemed to understand that the missing money was no longer the only thing they would be investigating.
