The Scholarship She Stole / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Account Behind the Transfers

David Carter had spent twenty-five years learning how to recognize a problem before it destroyed everything around it.

At work, he examined contracts, questioned suspicious expenses, and refused to accept explanations that didn't match the numbers.

Yet somehow, inside his own home, he had ignored warning signs he would never have overlooked in a business meeting.

Now, sitting at the dining table with Jasmine beside him, he stared at the transaction records that his wife desperately wanted them to stop examining.

“Jessica,” he said, “I'm asking you one last time. Who owns that account?””

His wife stood near the staircase, her diamond bracelet glittering beneath the chandelier.

“I already told you. Those transfers were temporary.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

“You're treating me like a criminal.””

“Then give me an explanation that makes sense.””

Jessica's eyes narrowed.

“You know what your problem is, David? You always think money can solve everything.””

“No. I think honesty can prevent people from destroying their own families.””

For a moment, Jessica looked genuinely offended.

Then her expression changed.

“Fine. The account belongs to me.””

Jasmine stared at her.

“You transferred my savings into your personal account?””

“I was going to put it back.””

“When?””

Jessica crossed her arms.

“When things settled down.””

“When things settled down?”” Jasmine repeated.

“My scholarship deadline is six days away!””

“Stop shouting at me!””

“Then stop giving me reasons to shout!””

David placed his hand on Jasmine's shoulder.

“Sweetheart, let me handle this.””

He turned toward Jessica.

“How much did you move into your personal account?””

“I don't remember the exact amount.””

“Then we'll use the statements to establish it.””

Jessica shook her head impatiently.

“You're making this unnecessarily complicated. I used some money for household expenses, and I borrowed some for personal reasons. I was going to replace it.””

“Did Jasmine authorize you to borrow her money?””

Jessica didn't answer.

“Did she?””

“No,” Jessica finally admitted.

“But she's family.””

David's expression hardened.

“Being family doesn't give you ownership of someone else's money.””

Jessica looked away.

Jasmine opened her laptop again.

“Dad, there are more transfers.””

She pointed to a series of transactions made before the scholarship arrived.

The amounts varied, but the recipient details were similar.

$875.

$1,600.

$2,400.

Then another $950.

David studied the dates.

“These started almost a month before your award was deposited.””

Jasmine nodded.

“I thought my savings were disappearing because I had forgotten about small expenses. I didn't realize someone was moving money.””

Jessica stepped toward the table.

“Give me that laptop.””

“No,” Jasmine said.

“I need to check something.””

“You've checked enough.””

Jessica's face flushed.

“David, are you going to let her speak to me like that?””

David didn't look away from the screen.

“She's asking to see records of her own money. That's reasonable.””

“You're making me look like some kind of thief.””

“Your actions are creating that impression. The records will tell us what actually happened.””

Jessica suddenly turned toward the hallway.

“I'm going to bed.””

“Not yet,” David said.

She stopped.

“What?””

“We're not finished discussing this.””

“I am.””

Jessica climbed the stairs, her heels striking each step with sharp, angry clicks.

A bedroom door slammed upstairs.

Jasmine stared at the staircase.

“Dad, what if she really was going to put it back?””

David pulled his chair closer.

“Then we should be able to establish where the money went and how she planned to replace it.””

“But she's still my stepmother.””

“I know.””

“I don't want Cameron to lose his family because of this.””

David's expression softened.

“Cameron isn't responsible for Jessica's decisions. Neither are you.””

Jasmine lowered her eyes.

She had spent years trying to avoid conflict in their blended family.

When Jessica criticized her for studying too much, Jasmine stayed quiet.

When Jessica complained that college applications consumed too much of the household budget, Jasmine took extra shifts.

When Cameron needed help with school supplies, Jasmine sometimes used her grocery store earnings to buy what he needed.

She had never imagined that the same household would treat her scholarship as available money.

David looked through the transaction records again.

“Tomorrow, we'll contact the bank and request the appropriate documentation. We'll also send the scholarship committee a written confirmation that you never withdrew your award.””

Jasmine nodded.

Then she noticed something strange.

“Dad, look at this transfer.””

She enlarged the transaction details.

One payment had been sent to an account with a different masked ending from Jessica's personal account.

The reference number matched the one she had found earlier.

David leaned closer.

“That's not the same account.””

“No.””

“Can you open the transfer details?””

Jasmine clicked.

A partial recipient description appeared.

It wasn't enough to establish the owner's identity, but it suggested that the payment had gone through a separate financial service.

David wrote down the reference number.

“We'll ask the bank to explain what information they can provide.””

Jasmine hesitated.

“Do you think it could be Cameron's account?””

“I don't know.””

“But she looked toward his room when I asked.””

David took a breath.

“Let's not accuse him without evidence.””

Jasmine nodded.

She wanted to believe Cameron knew nothing about the missing money.

He was seventeen, still in high school, and obsessed with basketball.

He talked about tournaments, coaches, and the possibility of playing at a college with a strong athletic program.

He had never asked Jasmine to give up her scholarship.

He had never told her he needed new uniforms badly enough to justify taking her money.

But there was one detail she couldn't ignore.

The team equipment Jessica had purchased seemed far more expensive than the uniforms she'd described.

Matching shoes.

Warm-up jackets.

Bags.

Additional team expenses.

Had every dollar gone toward the team?

Or had the basketball purchases merely provided an excuse?

The next morning, David and Jasmine contacted the bank.

They requested a review of the disputed transactions and asked what steps were available to secure the account, document transfers, and challenge any unauthorized activity.

The representative explained that the bank would need to review the relevant records and that some transfers might require additional investigation.

David provided the information they had collected.

Jasmine changed her account password and reviewed the available security settings.

She also contacted the scholarship committee again and prepared a written statement confirming that she intended to attend college and had never requested that her award be redirected.

By lunchtime, they had completed the immediate steps.

But the central question remained unanswered.

Who had received the other transfers?

That afternoon, David returned home with a folder containing printed statements and notes from the bank.

Jessica was sitting in the living room, dressed as though she had somewhere important to go.

Her handbag rested beside her.

Her diamond bracelet was still on her wrist.

“Where have you been?”” she asked.

“Handling the financial situation.””

Jessica gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course you have.””

David placed the folder on the coffee table.

“We need to talk about the remaining transactions.””

“I have nothing else to say.””

“Then listen.””

He opened the folder.

“The bank has confirmed that several transfers went to a separate account. We're documenting each one and requesting further information.””

Jessica's expression tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means we're not going to pretend the money disappeared into thin air.””

She rose from the sofa.

“You're humiliating me.””

“You should have thought about that before spending Jasmine's scholarship.””

Jessica moved closer, lowering her voice.

“David, please. We can resolve this privately.””

“We can resolve it honestly.””

“Do you really want the entire family dragged into this?””

David looked at her.

“You already dragged the family into it when you took money that wasn't yours.””

For several seconds, Jessica seemed unable to speak.

Then she said, “Cameron doesn't know anything about this.””

David studied her carefully.

“I didn't mention Cameron.””

Jessica's face went white.

The silence that followed was so complete that David could hear the clock ticking above the fireplace.

Jessica looked away first.

“I meant—”

“Why did you bring up Cameron?””

“I didn't.””

“You just said he doesn't know anything about this.””

She swallowed.

“Because I know what you're thinking.””

“What am I thinking?””

“That you're going to blame my son for everything.””

David closed the folder.

“Then help me understand why his name keeps entering this conversation when I'm asking about money you moved.””

Jessica took a step backward.

Before she could answer, footsteps sounded on the stairs.

Cameron appeared in the hallway, wearing a basketball T-shirt and carrying his phone.

He looked from his mother to David.

“What's going on?””

Jessica immediately changed her expression.

“Nothing, sweetheart.””

Cameron glanced at the folder.

“Then why does Dad look like he's about to fire somebody?””

David didn't smile.

“Cameron, I need to ask you something about the basketball uniforms.””

His stepson frowned.

“What about them?””

“Do you know how much they cost?””

Cameron hesitated.

Jessica spoke before he could answer.

“He doesn't handle the team's finances.””

David kept his eyes on Cameron.

“I didn't ask who handles the finances. I asked whether he knows how much the uniforms cost.””

Cameron shifted uncomfortably.

“Mom said the team needed new gear. I know she paid for it.””

“Did she tell you where the money came from?””

Cameron looked at Jessica.

Then he looked at David.

“No.””

David nodded slowly.

“Did you ask her?””

“No. I thought she was paying for it.””

Jessica moved between them.

“That's enough. Cameron has nothing to do with this.””

David looked at his wife.

“Then you shouldn't have any reason to be afraid of his answers.””

Cameron frowned.

“Mom, what is he talking about?””

Jessica grabbed his arm.

“Come upstairs.””

“Why?””

“Because I said so.””

Cameron pulled away.

“I'm not a little kid anymore.””

His words hung in the room.

David watched him carefully.

For the first time, Cameron seemed to realize that the argument wasn't merely about his mother's spending.

It was about Jasmine's future.

And it was about money that had disappeared before anyone had purchased a single uniform.

Jasmine stood near the dining table, clutching the printed transaction records.

She wanted to ask Cameron one question.

Just one.

But before she could speak, Cameron looked at her and said something that made her blood run cold.

“Jasmine, why are you looking at me like that?””

She swallowed.

“Because I need to know something.””

Cameron glanced at the folder.

“What?””

Jasmine pointed to the unexplained transfers.

“Did Mom ever give you money before the tournament?””

Cameron went completely still.

May you like

Jessica's fingers tightened around his arm.

And David realized that whatever happened next would determine whether his stepson had been kept in the dark—or had known far more than anyone wanted to admit.
