The Scholarship She Stole / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: Eighteen Thousand Six Hundred Dollars

The moment Jessica admitted she had spent Jasmine’s entire $18,600 scholarship, David Carter realized his wife had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.

“Your daughter can find another way to pay for college,” Jessica said, barely looking up from her phone.

She had no idea David was about to make her answer for every dollar.

Jasmine Carter stood in the middle of the living room, clutching an empty scholarship envelope.

At twenty years old, she had spent months working toward a future she could finally afford.

She had maintained a 4.0 GPA during her final year of high school while working evening shifts at a grocery store.

She had written scholarship essays during lunch breaks, tutored younger students on weekends, and stayed awake until two in the morning studying for exams.

When the acceptance letter arrived, she had cried in her father's arms.

The scholarship committee had selected her from hundreds of applicants.

The award was worth $18,600.

It was supposed to cover her tuition, textbooks, and the expenses that had once made college seem impossible.

Now every dollar was gone.

“Mom,” Jasmine whispered, staring at the diamond bracelet on Jessica's wrist, “where is my scholarship money?””

Jessica sighed.

“I used it.””

Jasmine blinked.

“What?””

“I paid for Cameron's basketball team. They needed uniforms, warm-up jackets, bags, and matching shoes.””

For several seconds, Jasmine couldn't process what she had heard.

“You spent my scholarship money on basketball uniforms?””

“Don't make it sound so dramatic.””

“How much did you spend?””

Jessica finally put down her phone.

“All of it.””

The words struck Jasmine harder than a slap.

She looked down at the envelope in her hands, remembering how carefully she had placed the award letter inside it that morning.

She had shown it to her father.

She had called her best friend.

She had even calculated how much she could save by buying used textbooks instead of new ones.

Now she was supposed to start over because her stepmother had decided someone else's future mattered more.

“Why would you do that?”” Jasmine asked.

Jessica adjusted her gold necklace.

“Cameron's team has an important tournament coming up. The other parents were complaining about the old uniforms, and his coach said the team needed to look professional.””

“But that money was awarded to me!””

“And you'll figure something else out.””

Jasmine's eyes filled with tears.

“My tuition deposit is due next week.””

“Then take out a loan.””

“I'm already working to pay for everything else!””

Jessica rolled her eyes.

“Jasmine, you're twenty years old. You're not a little girl anymore. Families make sacrifices.””

“Then why am I the only one making them?””

Jessica's expression hardened.

“Watch your tone. I'm still your mother.””

“No,” Jasmine whispered.

“You're my stepmother.””

The room went silent.

From the sofa near the window, David Carter slowly lowered his newspaper.

He had arrived home from work barely twenty minutes earlier.

Until that moment, he had expected an ordinary evening.

But the tremor in his daughter's voice made him sit upright.

“What did you just say?”” he asked.

Jasmine turned toward him.

“Dad, Jessica spent my scholarship.””

David placed the newspaper on the coffee table.

“What?””

“She used the entire $18,600 to buy Cameron's basketball uniforms. She said I could find another way to pay for college.””

David looked at his wife.

“Jessica, is that true?””

For the first time, her confidence faltered.

Then she recovered, arranging her face into the familiar expression she used whenever she wanted him to stop asking questions.

“David, don't jump to conclusions. I was helping Cameron.””

“With what money?””

She hesitated.

Then she lifted her chin.

“Jasmine's scholarship money.””

David stood.

“You spent my daughter's scholarship?””

“Technically, it was sitting in the household account,” Jessica replied.

“And Cameron needed it.””

Jasmine stared at her.

“It wasn't household money! It was awarded to me because of my grades!””

Jessica pointed a manicured finger at her.

“Lower your voice.””

David stepped forward.

“Don't point at my daughter.””

Jessica's mouth fell open.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

For years, David had worked hard to ensure that both children felt they belonged in the same family.

He had helped raise Cameron since the boy was nine.

He had paid for school supplies, dental appointments, summer camps, and countless other expenses.

He had never complained about supporting his stepson.

But he had never agreed to sacrifice Jasmine's education for Cameron's comfort.

“Why didn't you ask me?”” David demanded.

“Because you would have said no!””

The answer escaped Jessica before she could stop herself.

David stared at her.

Jasmine stopped crying.

Even Jessica seemed to realize what she had just admitted.

She quickly folded her arms.

“I mean, you always overthink everything. Cameron's season is important. He could get a college basketball offer if the team performs well.””

“So you decided Jasmine's scholarship was yours to spend?””

“I made a decision for this family.””

“No,” David said.

“You made a decision for yourself.””

Jessica scoffed.

“You're making me sound like a criminal over some clothes.””

“Eighteen thousand six hundred dollars isn't some clothes.””

“His coach said the team needed them!””

“Then you should have spoken to the coach, the other parents, or me. You had no right to touch a single dollar of Jasmine's scholarship.””

Jasmine wiped her cheeks.

“What about my future?””

Her voice was so small that David turned toward her immediately.

“What about my college? What about my textbooks? What about the tuition deposit that's due in six days?””

Jessica looked away.

“You'll have to take out a loan.””

Jasmine let out a broken laugh.

“You want me to borrow thousands of dollars because you spent my scholarship on shoes?””

“Don't be disrespectful!””

“Then stop treating my future like it doesn't matter!””

David moved between them.

“Enough.””

His voice was quiet, but neither woman spoke again.

He turned to Jasmine and took her trembling hands.

“Sweetheart, look at me.””

She raised her tearful face.

“Your college plans are not changing. Do you understand? I'll make sure every dollar is replaced.””

“But, Dad, the deadline is next week.””

“I know.””

“I worked so hard for that money.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

She broke down completely.

David pulled her into his arms, holding her as she cried against his shirt.

“You earned that scholarship,” he whispered.

“Nobody gets to take that away from you.””

Over Jasmine's shoulder, he looked at Jessica.

His gaze moved from the diamond bracelet on her wrist to the matching earrings, the gold necklace at her throat, and the designer handbag resting on the armchair.

Then he noticed something else.

Jessica was no longer looking at Jasmine.

She was staring at her jewelry as though she had suddenly remembered how much it was worth.

David's expression changed.

“If you don't have the money to replace what you took, we'll sell those.””

Jessica's head snapped up.

“What?””

“Every dollar. The full amount.””

“You cannot be serious!””

“That scholarship was Jasmine's personal award. If you can spend it without permission, you can help replace it without complaining.””

Jessica's face drained of color.

“You wouldn't sell my jewelry over a mistake.””

David stepped away from his daughter.

“A mistake is buying the wrong shoes. What you did was a decision.””

Jessica stared at him, suddenly uncertain of the man standing in front of her.

Then she said something that made David's expression turn cold.

“Fine. But before you start threatening me, perhaps you should ask Jasmine where the scholarship money was actually kept.””

Jasmine slowly lifted her head.

“Dad, what is she talking about?””

May you like

Jessica smiled.

And David realized his wife might have done far more than spend the money.
