Chapter 9: The Father Who Never Left
For six years, I had imagined my father's last moments.
I imagined him alone.
Afraid.
Wondering why nobody came.
I imagined the pain.
The confusion.
The final seconds before he disappeared from my life forever.
But I never imagined this.
I never imagined he was alive.
I never imagined he had been somewhere in this world, breathing, waiting, knowing I believed he was gone.
My phone shook in my hand.
The message was still there.
*Dad: Emily, I'm still alive.*
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
My entire body felt frozen between two realities.
The one I had lived for six years.
And the one standing in front of me now.
"Emily.""
Ryan's voice broke through the silence.
I looked at him.
Slowly.
"Did you know?""
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
My stomach turned.
"You knew.""
His eyes filled.
"I knew he survived.""
The words felt impossible.
"You knew my father was alive.""
"Emily...""
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"You don't get to explain.""
I pointed at him.
"Not after everything.""
Richard watched quietly.
Almost enjoying it.
And that made something inside me snap.
I turned toward him.
"You knew too.""
Richard didn't deny it.
"Yes.""
The honesty shocked me.
"You all knew.""
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I found out later.""
I looked at him.
"How much later?""
He hesitated.
"Three months after the accident.""
My heart broke all over again.
Three months.
My father was alive for three months.
And I was grieving.
I was choosing flowers for a grave.
I was looking at pictures.
I was trying to remember the sound of his voice.
"Where was he?""
Nobody answered.
I looked at Ryan.
"Where was my father?""
Ryan whispered:
"Richard had him moved.""
I looked at Richard.
"Where?""
Richard's expression stayed calm.
"Emily, your father made dangerous choices.""
My voice rose.
"Where?""
He stared at me.
Then smiled slightly.
"Still asking the wrong questions.""
I stepped closer.
"Wrong questions?""
"You're focused on what happened to him.""
He tilted his head.
"You should be asking why he survived.""
A chill ran through me.
"What does that mean?""
Nobody answered.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, a location.
And a picture.
I opened it.
A small cabin.
Old.
Remote.
Surrounded by trees.
Underneath it:
*"Come alone.""*
My heart pounded.
The next message appeared.
*"I need to tell you what Ryan couldn't.""*
I looked at Ryan.
His face went pale.
"Don't go.""
The words came quickly.
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because you don't know who sent that.""
I held up the phone.
"It says Dad.""
Ryan shook his head.
"That doesn't mean it's safe.""
I laughed.
"Safe?""
I looked around the room.
"My husband cheated on me.""
I pointed at Richard.
"His father covered up my father's disappearance.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Her family destroyed mine.""
Then back at Ryan.
"And you're worried about me being unsafe?""
Ryan looked away.
The truth hurt.
But it was finally becoming clear.
Everyone in this room had spent years deciding what I was allowed to know.
No more.
"I am going.""
Ryan stepped forward.
"Emily.""
I stopped him.
"Don't.""
He froze.
"Whatever you say next...""
I swallowed.
"Don't say you did it to protect me.""
His face fell.
Because he knew.
That was exactly what he was going to say.
Daniel looked at me.
"I'll go with you.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"It's dangerous.""
"I know.""
"Then why?""
I looked at him.
"Because for six years, everyone around me has been making decisions about my life.""
I held up my phone.
"I make this one.""
Nobody argued.
Even Richard stayed silent.
That scared me.
Because a man like him not fighting meant he had another plan.
I grabbed my coat.
Ryan followed me toward the door.
"Emily.""
I stopped.
For a moment, I almost turned around.
Because despite everything...
A part of me still loved him.
That was the cruelest part.
Love didn't disappear just because someone hurt you.
Sometimes it stayed.
Sometimes it sat beside the pain.
Waiting.
"I am sorry.""
I didn't look back.
"No.""
His voice cracked.
"Please.""
I closed my eyes.
"I believe you're sorry.""
A pause.
"But I don't know who you are anymore.""
Then I walked out.
The drive took almost two hours.
The entire way, I expected someone to follow me.
I expected Ryan.
Richard.
Someone.
But nobody came.
The cabin sat at the end of a dirt road.
Exactly like the picture.
My hands tightened around the steering wheel.
Six years of questions.
Six years of grief.
All leading here.
I stepped out.
The air was cold.
The forest was quiet.
Too quiet.
I walked toward the cabin.
The door opened before I knocked.
And there he was.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably him.
My father.
For a few seconds, neither of us moved.
Then he whispered:
"Emily.""
I covered my mouth.
The sound that came out wasn't a cry.
It was something deeper.
Something broken.
Because every part of me recognized him.
The way he stood.
The way he looked at me.
The way he said my name.
"Dad?""
His face collapsed.
And then he was crying.
My father.
The strongest person I had ever known.
Crying.
"I'm sorry.""
I couldn't move.
"I'm so sorry.""
Then I ran.
I don't remember crossing the distance.
I don't remember opening my arms.
I only remember feeling him hold me.
Feeling his heartbeat.
Realizing the impossible truth.
My father was alive.
And he was holding me.
"I thought you were dead.""
My voice broke.
"I know.""
"I buried you.""
"I know.""
"I missed you.""
He held me tighter.
"I missed you every day.""
We stood there for a long time.
Years of pain pouring out in seconds.
Finally, I stepped back.
"Why?""
The question came immediately.
"Why did you leave me?""
His face changed.
"I didn't.""
I wiped my tears.
"What?""
"I tried to come home.""
He looked down.
"Every time I got close, they stopped me.""
"Who?""
He looked at me.
"Richard.""
My jaw tightened.
"And Ryan?""
My father went silent.
That silence hurt.
"Dad.""
He took a breath.
"Ryan was involved.""
I closed my eyes.
"I know.""
"But...""
I looked up.
"But what?""
My father sat down.
"Ryan wasn't the one who made the plan.""
"Then who did?""
My father's expression became serious.
"The person who benefited most from my disappearance.""
I already knew.
But I needed him to say it.
"Richard.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
The room felt colder.
"But there's something you don't know.""
"What?""
My father reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a small box.
Inside was a stack of documents.
And a wedding photograph.
My wedding photograph.
I picked it up.
"What is this?""
My father looked at me sadly.
"The reason Richard never wanted me to come back.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
He pointed at the picture.
At Ryan.
"Because he wasn't trying to destroy my family.""
My blood ran cold.
"He was trying to control it.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
My father opened the documents.
The first page had Ryan's name.
The second had mine.
And the third...
Had Richard's signature.
My father whispered:
"Emily, your marriage was never an accident.""
I felt my heart stop.
"What?""
He looked me directly in the eyes.
"Ryan didn't meet you by chance.""
I couldn't breathe.
"No.""
"I'm sorry.""
My father pushed the papers toward me.
"Richard arranged everything.""
The room spun.
My father reached for my hand.
"The man you married...""
A pause.
"Was chosen for you.""
I stared at the documents.
At the signatures.
At the proof.
And suddenly every memory I had with Ryan felt different.
Every meeting.
Every coincidence.
Every moment I thought was fate.
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked down.
Ryan.
I almost ignored it.
But then I answered.
His voice came through immediately.
"Emily.""
He sounded terrified.
"Listen to me.""
I said nothing.
Then he whispered:
"My father knows where you are.""
My blood froze.
"What?""
A pause.
Then:
"He isn't coming for your father.""
The line went silent.
"Ryan?""
May you like
His voice dropped.
"He's coming for you.""
