Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Door
Nobody moved.
Not Ryan.
Not Vanessa.
Not Daniel.
Not me.
The entire house seemed to freeze around those words.
*"We need to finish what we started six years ago.""*
My father-in-law's voice was calm.
Too calm.
Like he wasn't standing outside a house full of people whose lives he had destroyed.
Like he was just stopping by for dinner.
I looked at Ryan.
His face had lost all color.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because I had spent the last several hours watching Ryan lie, panic, and fall apart.
But this was different.
This wasn't guilt.
This was fear.
Real fear.
"Ryan.""
My voice was quiet.
"What did your father do?""
He didn't answer.
The knocking came again.
Three slow knocks.
This time harder.
"Ryan.""
His father called from outside.
"Don't make this harder than it needs to be.""
My stomach tightened.
I looked toward the front door.
Then back at Ryan.
"Who is he talking to?""
Ryan swallowed.
"Me.""
"Why?""
His eyes met mine.
And for a second, I saw the boy he must have been.
Someone who spent his whole life afraid of disappointing his father.
Then that image disappeared.
Because the man standing in front of me was someone who had allowed fear to ruin everything.
"My father knows.""
"Knows what?""
Ryan looked at the floor.
"Everything.""
I felt a chill run through me.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Do not open that door.""
My eyes moved to him.
"You know him?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Who is he?""
Daniel stared at the door.
"Richard Parker.""
The name hit me.
My husband's father.
The man who had given a speech at our wedding.
The man who hugged me and said:
"Welcome to the family.""
The man who had brought champagne when Ryan and I bought this house.
I remembered him smiling.
I remembered him telling me:
"You remind me of Ryan when he was younger. Kind. Trusting.""
Now I wondered if he had been describing his son...
or mocking him.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Richard wasn't just Ryan's father.""
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
She hesitated.
Then:
"He was the person controlling everything.""
My heart sank.
Ryan immediately shook his head.
"No.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You know it's true.""
"My father wasn't involved.""
Her expression changed.
"Ryan.""
That single word carried years of disappointment.
"Stop protecting him.""
Ryan looked away.
The knocking stopped.
That was somehow worse.
Silence filled the house.
Then the door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
My entire body tensed.
"How does he have a key?""
I whispered.
Nobody answered.
Then Ryan said:
"Because he helped us buy this house.""
I turned toward him.
"Us?""
Ryan looked ashamed.
"No.""
He corrected himself.
"Your father helped you buy this house.""
I stared.
"What?""
He looked at me.
"Your dad gave us the down payment.""
My heart dropped.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life I didn't know existed.
"My father?""
Ryan nodded.
"He wanted to help us start our life.""
I closed my eyes.
My father.
Even after death, he kept appearing in every hidden corner of my marriage.
Every secret.
Every sacrifice.
Every betrayal.
"He trusted you.""
Ryan looked down.
"I know.""
"No.""
I looked at him.
"You don't.""
The front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Richard Parker stepped inside.
He didn't look surprised.
Not even slightly.
He wore a dark suit.
Perfectly pressed.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
He looked exactly like the man I remembered.
A respectable businessman.
A loving father.
A trusted family friend.
But now I knew better.
His eyes moved across the room.
First to Ryan.
Then Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
Finally...
me.
"Emily.""
Hearing him say my name made my skin crawl.
I stepped back.
"Don't.""
His eyebrows lifted.
"Don't what?""
"Don't pretend you care about me.""
For the first time, his expression changed.
A small smile disappeared.
"You're upset.""
I laughed.
"Upset?""
I pointed around the room.
"That's what you call this?""
Richard calmly closed the door behind him.
"You have been told things without context.""
Daniel moved forward.
"She knows enough.""
Richard looked at him.
"Still alive, Daniel?""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Disappointed?""
Richard smiled slightly.
"No.""
He looked him up and down.
"Surprised.""
My stomach turned.
"You knew he was alive.""
Richard looked at me.
"Yes.""
"And you let me believe he was dead.""
He didn't deny it.
That was the worst part.
He simply stood there.
Like my pain was an inconvenience.
"Emily, your father made choices.""
My eyes narrowed.
"My father?""
Richard sighed.
"He was a good man.""
The way he said it made me angry.
Past tense.
Like he had earned the right to talk about him.
"But he was stubborn.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Careful.""
Richard ignored him.
"Your father thought he could expose everyone and walk away.""
My hands curled into fists.
"Everyone?""
Richard looked at me.
"Your father knew too much.""
Ryan whispered:
"Dad.""
Richard turned.
"What?""
Ryan looked sick.
"You need to leave.""
Richard stared at him.
And somehow, that one look made Ryan shrink.
Just like a child.
"You still don't understand.""
Richard walked closer.
"After everything I did for you.""
Ryan shook his head.
"You ruined my life.""
Richard smiled.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"She ruined your life.""
The room went silent.
I felt my blood boil.
"What did you say?""
Richard didn't look away.
"Everything was fine until your father got involved.""
My voice became cold.
"My father tried to stop you.""
Richard tilted his head.
"Your father tried to destroy what I built.""
"By exposing you?""
His silence was answer enough.
I stepped closer.
"You killed him.""
Ryan immediately looked at me.
"Emily—"
Richard smiled sadly.
"Careful with accusations.""
"You were there.""
"I was many places.""
"You threatened him.""
"I warned him.""
"You manipulated Ryan.""
"I guided him.""
I looked at Ryan.
Richard noticed.
"Your husband was weak.""
Ryan flinched.
"He wanted success.""
Richard continued.
"He wanted respect.""
His eyes moved back to me.
"He wanted to be someone.""
I felt sick.
"And you gave him that?""
Richard smiled.
"I gave him opportunity.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You gave him fear.""
For the first time, Richard's expression hardened.
A tiny crack in the mask.
Good.
I wanted him angry.
I wanted him to stop pretending.
"You have no idea what happened that night.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"She deserves to know.""
Richard looked at him.
"You always were sentimental.""
Daniel clenched his jaw.
"Tell her.""
Richard looked back at me.
Then slowly reached into his coat pocket.
Everyone tensed.
But he didn't pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a small envelope.
He placed it on the table.
"My father gave this to me before he died.""
I froze.
"What?""
Richard looked at me.
"Your grandfather.""
My breath caught.
"My grandfather?""
He nodded.
"He knew things about your father.""
I stared at the envelope.
Another letter.
Another secret.
Another person who had hidden the truth from me.
Richard smiled faintly.
"You want answers, Emily?""
I didn't respond.
"Then open it.""
Nobody moved.
I looked at Ryan.
He looked terrified.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked worried.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she already knew what was inside.
Slowly, I reached for the envelope.
My fingers touched the paper.
Then Richard said:
"Before you open it, you should know one thing.""
I stopped.
"What?""
His eyes moved toward Ryan.
Then back to me.
"The night your father died...""
A pause.
"The person who betrayed him wasn't me.""
My heart pounded.
Richard smiled.
"It was the person you married.""
I looked at Ryan.
His face went completely white.
May you like
And for the first time that night...
I wondered if I had been defending the wrong villain all along.
