Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I stared at the piece of paper on the floor like it had fallen out of another universe.
My name was written across the top.
*Emily Parker.*
The handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
Ryan's handwriting.
The same handwriting that used to leave little notes on the kitchen counter.
Have a good day, beautiful.
Don't forget your coffee.
Love you always.
My fingers went numb.
I reached down and picked it up.
"Emily.""
Ryan's voice immediately changed.
Not angry anymore.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
I looked up at him.
"Why is my name on this?""
He stepped forward.
"Give me that.""
I pulled the paper away.
"No.""
Vanessa stood near the doorway, watching me carefully.
A few minutes ago, she had looked confident.
Untouchable.
Now she looked nervous.
And that told me everything.
Whatever was on that paper mattered.
Ryan noticed where my eyes went.
"Emily, you don't understand what you're looking at.""
I let out a quiet laugh.
It wasn't because anything was funny.
It was because I couldn't believe this was my life.
"My husband cheated on me in my own bed, and now I'm holding a document with my name on it that you don't want me to read.""
I looked at him.
"Yeah, Ryan. I think I understand enough.""
His jaw tightened.
"Just listen to me.""
"No.""
My voice surprised even me.
I had spent years being patient with Ryan.
Understanding.
Forgiving.
Giving him the benefit of the doubt even when he didn't deserve it.
Not tonight.
Not anymore.
"You have spent the last two weeks telling me you missed me while she was here.""
I pointed toward Vanessa.
"You told me you couldn't sleep without me while she was sleeping next to you.""
Ryan looked down.
That tiny movement hurt more than any confession could have.
Because it meant he knew.
He knew exactly what he had done.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Ryan, maybe you should tell her.""
I turned toward her.
"What exactly should he tell me?""
She didn't answer.
She just looked at Ryan.
And that was the moment I realized something.
They had rehearsed this.
Maybe not the exact words.
Maybe not the exact scene.
But they had talked about me.
They had planned for this possibility.
They had imagined what would happen if I found out.
My own husband and the woman he betrayed me with had prepared for my heartbreak.
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
"Emily, sit down.""
I laughed.
"Are you serious?""
"Please.""
"No.""
I held up the paper.
"You're going to explain this.""
He stayed quiet.
The silence stretched.
Then he finally said:
"It's a business document.""
I stared at him.
"A business document with my name on it?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
That was enough.
I didn't need another answer.
"Because of her?""
Vanessa sighed.
"This isn't about me.""
I looked at her.
"You're literally standing in my bedroom wearing my robe.""
She glanced down at herself.
Then smiled slightly.
That smile.
That little expression like she was above me.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I said quietly:
"You really think you won something?""
Her smile faded.
"What?""
"You think because he chose you tonight, you won.""
I shook my head.
"You don't know what you got.""
Ryan stepped between us.
"Enough.""
I looked at him.
"No. Not enough.""
My eyes burned.
"You don't get to stand there and play the exhausted husband caught between two women. You made a choice.""
His face changed.
For the first time, I saw shame.
But it wasn't enough.
Shame didn't erase betrayal.
Shame didn't erase the nights I cried alone in a hotel room while he was lying beside someone else.
I unfolded the paper.
The first line made my heart stop.
It wasn't a business contract.
It was a property document.
My property.
The house.
The house Ryan had always called ours.
My hands started shaking as I read further.
There were legal terms I didn't fully understand.
Transfer.
Ownership.
Authorization.
And at the bottom...
A signature.
Ryan's signature.
And a blank line where mine was supposed to be.
I looked at him slowly.
"What is this?""
He didn't answer.
"Ryan.""
Still nothing.
I held up the paper.
"What is this?""
His silence became the answer.
Vanessa walked closer.
"Emily, you need to understand something.""
I turned sharply.
"No, I don't need to understand anything from you.""
She ignored me.
"Ryan has been trying to fix a mistake.""
My eyebrows pulled together.
"A mistake?""
Ryan looked at her.
"Stop.""
"No," Vanessa said.
"She deserves to know.""
I looked between them.
"What mistake?""
Ryan closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like the man I married.
The man who used to dance with me in the kitchen.
The man who held my hand during my mother's surgery.
The man who promised me forever.
Then he opened his eyes.
And he was a stranger again.
"Emily...""
I waited.
"My company is in trouble.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with my house?""
He looked away.
Everything inside me went cold.
"What did you do?""
"Nothing.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I didn't mean for this to happen.""
My chest tightened.
"What happened, Ryan?""
He sat down on the edge of the bed.
The same bed where I had found him.
"I invested money.""
I stared at him.
"What money?""
Silence.
Then:
"Our money.""
The room spun.
I grabbed the edge of the dresser.
"You used our savings?""
"It wasn't supposed to go wrong.""
"How much?""
He didn't answer.
"How much, Ryan?""
"Emily...""
"How much?""
His voice dropped.
"Almost everything.""
For a few seconds, I couldn't hear anything.
Not Vanessa.
Not the rain hitting the windows.
Not even my own breathing.
Almost everything.
Years of working.
Years of saving.
Years of saying no to vacations because we were building something.
Gone.
"You took our money.""
"I was trying to build a future.""
"You gambled our future.""
"I was going to fix it.""
"How?""
He looked at the paper.
And suddenly I understood.
My hands tightened around the document.
"You were going to put the house up as collateral.""
Ryan didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
I felt something inside me break.
Not my heart.
Something else.
Trust.
Because cheating was one betrayal.
But this?
This was him risking the entire life we built without even telling me.
"You were going to sign my name.""
"I wasn't going to hurt you.""
I looked at him.
"You already did.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Emily, Ryan was under pressure.""
I turned toward her.
"Don't.""
"I'm just saying—"
"No.""
My voice became sharper.
"You don't get to explain my husband to me.""
She stopped.
"You were his coworker.""
I pointed at her.
"You came to my house.""
"You don't know everything.""
"Then tell me.""
The room went quiet.
Vanessa looked at Ryan.
That look.
That secret look.
Like they were connected by something deeper than an affair.
I noticed.
Ryan noticed me noticing.
And suddenly he looked scared again.
"Vanessa.""
She ignored him.
"Emily...""
I waited.
"Ryan didn't tell you about the promotion, did he?""
My forehead creased.
"What promotion?""
Ryan stood immediately.
"Don't.""
Vanessa smiled sadly.
"Oh, she doesn't know.""
My stomach twisted.
"Know what?""
Ryan moved toward her.
"Vanessa, stop talking.""
But she continued.
"Ryan didn't just lose money because of his company.""
She looked at me.
"He lost his position too.""
I stared at Ryan.
"What is she talking about?""
No answer.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Vanessa said the one thing that made my blood run cold.
"The reason Ryan needed your signature wasn't because he was trying to save the house.""
She paused.
"He was trying to save himself.""
I looked at my husband.
And for the first time that night, I wasn't wondering why he cheated.
I was wondering what else he had hidden.
Because apparently, while I was away building a future with him...
He had been building a completely different life behind my back.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But then I saw the preview.
And my entire body froze.
*"Emily, if you are reading this, Ryan hasn't told you the truth about what happened the night your father died.""*
My fingers went cold.
May you like
Because there was only one person who knew what happened that night.
And that person was supposed to be dead.
