Chapter 5: The Family Secret Behind the Photograph

The photograph slipped slightly between my fingers.

I stared at it.

Then I stared at Vanessa.

Then back at the photograph.

No.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The picture was old.

The edges were worn.

The colors had faded into that yellowish tint old memories always carried.

But there was no mistake.

My father was standing on the left.

Ryan was standing beside him.

And between them was a man I knew.

A man whose face I had seen countless times.

A man who had smiled at me across dinner tables.

A man who had raised the woman who was currently standing upstairs in my bedroom.

Vanessa's father.

Thomas Carter.

My fingers tightened around the picture.

"Why is your father in this?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Her confidence disappeared completely.

For the first time since I walked into my house, she looked scared.

Not annoyed.

Not embarrassed.

Scared.

Ryan noticed.

"Vanessa.""

She looked at him.

And that one look told me everything.

They were hiding something together.

I turned toward Ryan.

"How long have you known?""

He didn't speak.

"Ryan.""

His eyes moved to the floor.

"I knew Thomas was involved.""

My stomach twisted.

"Involved in what?""

He rubbed his face.

"Emily...""

I slammed the photograph onto the kitchen counter.

"No more.""

My voice echoed through the room.

"No more half-truths. No more protecting people. No more telling me something is complicated because you don't want to say the ugly part.""

I pointed at the photograph.

"I want the truth.""

Daniel stood quietly near the doorway.

Watching.

Waiting.

Like he knew this moment had been coming for years.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I didn't know.""

I looked at her.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"It's true.""

"You were literally in bed with my husband.""

Her face tightened.

"This isn't about that.""

I laughed.

"Funny.""

I looked around the room.

"Everything seems to somehow not be about the thing that hurts the most.""

Ryan stepped forward.

"Emily, please.""

I looked at him.

"Did you know Vanessa's father worked with mine?""

He hesitated.

"Yes.""

"Did you know your business problems were connected to him?""

Another hesitation.

"Yes.""

I nodded slowly.

The pain became something else.

Something colder.

"So while I was in Boston thinking my biggest problem was missing my husband...""

I looked at Vanessa.

"You two were dealing with something that involved my father.""

Nobody answered.

I picked up the photograph again.

"Why was this taken?""

Daniel finally spoke.

"Because your father discovered the truth.""

I looked at him.

"What truth?""

He walked closer.

"Thomas Carter wasn't just an investor.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Don't talk about my father like you knew him.""

Daniel looked at her.

"I knew him better than you did.""

That sentence hit hard.

Vanessa went silent.

Daniel continued.

"Thomas built his reputation on helping companies grow. People trusted him.""

He looked at the photograph.

"But behind closed doors, he was moving money.""

Ryan looked away.

I noticed.

"You knew.""

Ryan's voice was barely audible.

"I knew something was wrong.""

My chest tightened.

"Something?""

He looked at me.

"Emily, I was young.""

"You were a grown man.""

"I made mistakes.""

I shook my head.

"You keep calling everything a mistake.""

My voice broke.

"A mistake is forgetting to pay a bill.""

I stepped closer.

"A mistake is saying the wrong thing during an argument.""

I pointed at him.

"Destroying my family's trust is a choice.""

Ryan swallowed.

"I was scared.""

"Of what?""

He didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"Of losing everything.""

I looked at Ryan.

And I hated that part of me still wanted him to deny it.

I wanted him to fight.

I wanted him to say everyone was wrong.

But he just stood there.

Quiet.

Guilty.

Daniel walked toward the table.

"Your father found records showing Thomas was stealing from investors.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"My father would never do that.""

Daniel looked at her.

"I understand why you believe that.""

"Don't.""

"But your father wasn't the only one involved.""

My eyes moved to Ryan.

The room went still.

"No.""

Ryan closed his eyes.

"Emily.""

"No.""

I backed away.

"No, don't do that.""

"Do what?""

"Say my name like you're about to apologize.""

His face fell.

"Because I don't need an apology.""

I pointed at him.

"I need the truth.""

He was quiet.

Then he whispered:

"I helped them.""

Those three words hurt more than anything else.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

"You what?""

Ryan looked miserable.

"When I started my company, Thomas invested in me.""

I listened.

"Your father introduced us.""

He took a shaky breath.

"I thought they were legitimate.""

"Then?""

"Then I found out.""

My heart pounded.

"You found out they were stealing.""

Ryan nodded.

"And you stayed.""

He looked down.

"I was scared.""

I laughed.

"Everyone was scared.""

I looked at Daniel.

"My father was scared.""

Then at Ryan.

"But he tried to do the right thing.""

Ryan's eyes filled.

"I know.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You don't get to say that.""

I picked up the photograph.

"My father died because he tried to do the right thing.""

The silence after that was unbearable.

Then Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Ryan didn't kill your father.""

I looked at her.

"You seem very sure.""

She looked away.

"Because I know what happened.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What?""

She swallowed.

"I was there.""

Everything stopped.

Even Ryan looked shocked.

"What?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"I never told you because I knew you'd leave.""

My stomach dropped.

"You were there the night my father died?""

She nodded slowly.

"I followed my dad.""

"Why?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because I knew something was wrong.""

I stared at her.

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""

She looked down.

"Because my father threatened me.""

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa's voice became smaller.

"He told me if I went to the police, he would destroy Ryan's life.""

I looked at Ryan.

"Why?""

Ryan didn't answer.

Vanessa did.

"Because Ryan wasn't just his business partner.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa looked directly at Ryan.

And this time, there was no affection in her eyes.

Only anger.

"He was his favorite.""

Ryan's face changed.

"Vanessa.""

"No.""

She stepped forward.

"You let her think you were innocent all these years.""

My eyes moved between them.

"What is she talking about?""

Ryan said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

"Ryan didn't just help my father hide money.""

She looked at me.

"He helped him create the entire scheme.""

My heart stopped.

"No.""

Ryan shook his head.

"That's not true.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Really?""

She pointed at him.

"Then tell her why you had the same documents your father found.""

I froze.

"Your father?""

Ryan looked at me.

My voice became a whisper.

"What documents?""

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel reached into his coat again.

This time, he pulled out a small flash drive.

"I found this in your father's safe.""

He placed it on the table.

"Everything is on here.""

I stared at the tiny piece of plastic.

A lifetime of secrets hidden inside something smaller than my thumb.

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father didn't die because he discovered a crime.""

I held my breath.

"He died because he discovered who was willing to let him disappear.""

My eyes moved slowly toward Ryan.

And then my phone buzzed again.

A new message.

From the same unknown number.

This time, there was a picture attached.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a security camera image.

A blurry shot from the night my father died.

A car.

A dark road.

And a man standing beside my father's vehicle.

I zoomed in.

The face became clearer.

My hand covered my mouth.

Because I knew that person.

I had seen him every morning for six years.
