Chapter 8: The Lie Ryan Buried for Six Years

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

It was just paper.

A few sheets folded together.

Nothing more.

But my hands trembled like I was holding the truth to my entire life.

Maybe I was.

The room was silent.

Everyone was waiting.

Ryan looked at me like he wanted to say something.

Like he wanted to stop me.

But he didn't.

That told me more than words ever could.

I slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting wasn't my father's.

It was older.

Shakier.

A stranger's handwriting carrying a familiar name.

I unfolded the page.

The first line made my heart stop.

*Emily, if you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.*

I swallowed.

My eyes moved across the paper.

*Your father was not the only person who was betrayed.*

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

I kept reading.

*Daniel tried to protect him. I tried to warn him. But the person closest to him was the one who opened the door.*

My breathing became uneven.

The person closest to him.

My eyes lifted toward Ryan.

He looked away.

I continued.

*Daniel was right about one thing. Your father discovered the financial crimes. But he also discovered something worse. He discovered that someone inside his own circle was helping them.*

The words blurred.

Inside his own circle.

I thought about all the people my father trusted.

His business partners.

His friends.

His family.

Then I read the next sentence.

And everything stopped.

*Ryan Parker was not forced into this. He chose it.*

The letter slipped slightly in my hands.

"No.""

The word came out quietly.

Ryan looked at me.

"Emily...""

I looked up.

"Tell me it's not true.""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

My heart sank.

Because some part of me still wanted him to fight.

I wanted him to call it a lie.

I wanted him to be angry.

Anything.

But he just stood there.

Broken.

"Tell me.""

Ryan closed his eyes.

"I was young.""

I stared at him.

"That is your answer?""

"No.""

"Because I don't care how young you were.""

My voice shook.

"My father trusted you.""

"I know.""

"You were going to marry me.""

"I know.""

"You sat at my father's funeral.""

Tears filled his eyes.

"I know.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You keep saying that.""

I folded the letter.

"Do you know what I remember most about that day?""

Ryan didn't answer.

"I remember you holding my hand.""

My voice became quieter.

"I remember you telling me we would get through it together.""

I looked at him.

"You looked me in the eyes.""

A tear slipped down his face.

"And you knew.""

The guilt on his face was almost unbearable.

Almost.

But not enough.

"Tell me what happened.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan sat down.

Like his legs couldn't hold him anymore.

"I met your father because he asked me to come.""

I stayed standing.

"Why?""

"He knew about the accounts.""

I frowned.

"What accounts?""

"The ones Thomas Carter was hiding.""

Vanessa looked away.

Ryan continued.

"Your father wanted me to admit everything.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

The answer was immediate.

Honest.

And somehow that hurt worse.

"Why?""

Ryan stared at his hands.

"Because Richard promised me everything would disappear.""

I looked at Richard.

He stood there calmly.

Like this was a business conversation.

"What did he promise you?""

Ryan swallowed.

"A promotion.""

My eyes narrowed.

"A promotion?""

"He said I could run the company.""

I laughed softly.

"You destroyed my family for a job title?""

Ryan flinched.

"It wasn't just that.""

"Then what?""

He looked at me.

"I was scared.""

Again.

That word.

The excuse that followed him everywhere.

"My father had convinced me that if I went against him, I would lose everything.""

Ryan looked toward Richard.

"I thought he was right.""

Richard smiled.

"You were.""

Ryan looked at him with disgust.

"No.""

Richard raised an eyebrow.

"You wouldn't have survived without me.""

Ryan stood suddenly.

"Surviving isn't the same as living.""

Everyone went quiet.

For a second, I saw something different.

Not the husband who lied.

Not the man who betrayed my father.

A person who finally understood what he had become.

Then Richard laughed.

"Listen to you.""

Ryan looked at him.

"You made me this way.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

"No.""

He stepped closer.

"I gave you a choice.""

The words hung in the air.

Ryan froze.

And I noticed.

A tiny reaction.

A memory.

Something he wasn't telling me.

I turned toward him.

"What choice?""

Ryan didn't answer.

"Ryan.""

His jaw tightened.

"Tell her.""

Richard smiled.

"Yes.""

He looked almost amused.

"Tell your wife what you chose.""

Ryan's hands shook.

"I...""

He stopped.

Then whispered:

"I chose money.""

The room went silent.

I felt my chest tighten.

But then Ryan continued.

"And then I tried to take it back.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

He looked at me.

"The night your father died, I went back.""

I remembered his earlier words.

He came back.

But now I understood there was more.

"Why?""

"Because your father had convinced me I was wrong.""

Ryan looked down.

"He told me Richard didn't care about me.""

A sad smile crossed his face.

"He said Richard only cared about what I could do for him.""

My eyes moved to Richard.

And for the first time, I saw anger.

Real anger.

Not control.

Not confidence.

A crack.

Ryan continued.

"I went back to tell your father I would testify.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Finally.""

Ryan looked at him.

"I was too late.""

The room went quiet.

"What happened?""

Ryan swallowed.

"When I arrived, Richard was already there.""

Richard's expression changed.

"Be careful.""

Ryan ignored him.

"Your father was hurt.""

My breath caught.

"But alive.""

I stared.

"Alive?""

Ryan nodded.

"He was alive.""

The words hit me harder than I expected.

All these years.

My father had been alive after the crash.

Alive.

Waiting.

And nobody told me.

"He looked at me.""

Ryan's voice broke.

"He told me to take care of you.""

I covered my mouth.

My father's last thought wasn't revenge.

It was me.

"Then what happened?""

Ryan looked toward Richard.

"Richard told me to leave.""

"And you did.""

Ryan nodded.

"I was afraid.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

Fear.

But this time, it sounded different.

Because I finally understood.

Ryan's fear had cost everyone else everything.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Richard made sure the story became an accident.""

I looked at him.

"And my father?""

Daniel's face changed.

"I found him later.""

My heart stopped.

"Where?""

"Alive.""

The word barely came out.

I grabbed the counter.

"Where?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Hidden.""

"By who?""

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

"My father.""

I looked at her.

She looked devastated.

"Thomas found him after Richard left.""

"What did he do?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"He kept him alive.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

She looked at Richard.

"Because Richard wanted him gone.""

The room became silent.

Richard finally spoke.

"Enough.""

Everyone looked at him.

His calm mask was gone.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with.""

I stepped forward.

"Actually, I think I do.""

Richard stared at me.

"You think Ryan is the villain because he made one mistake.""

I looked at Ryan.

Then back at Richard.

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I think Ryan is guilty because he kept choosing silence.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"But he wasn't the one who made the final decision.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What final decision?""

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, not from the unknown number.

From a saved contact.

A contact I hadn't heard from in six years.

My hands went numb.

Because the name on the screen was:

*Dad.*

The message had only four words.

*"Emily, I'm still alive.""*

I looked up.

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Because everyone in the room knew.

The impossible had just become real.
