Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
For six years, I had carried a single image of my father's final moments.
A dark road.
A ringing phone.
A police officer standing at my mother's front door.
The words that changed my life forever.
*"I'm sorry. There was an accident.""*
My father was gone.
That was the story I was given.
The story I accepted.
The story Ryan never corrected.
But now the man standing in my kitchen was wearing my father's face.
And the impossible part wasn't that he looked like him.
The impossible part was that he had my father's eyes.
The same tired eyes that looked at me every morning before work.
The same eyes that softened whenever he said:
"You're stronger than you think, Em.""
My knees almost gave out.
I grabbed the edge of the counter.
"No.""
The word came out as a whisper.
"No, this isn't real.""
The man took another step forward.
"Emily.""
I shook my head.
"Don't.""
My voice cracked.
"Don't say my name like you know me.""
His face broke.
Not dramatically.
Not like someone trying to convince me.
Like someone who had been waiting years to hear me say anything at all.
"I know I don't deserve to ask you for anything.""
I stared at him.
"You're not my father.""
The words hurt coming out.
But they were the only thing keeping me standing.
"My father died.""
The man looked down.
"I know.""
Ryan moved suddenly.
"Emily, you need to listen to me.""
I turned toward him.
"No.""
His mouth closed.
"You knew.""
I pointed at him.
"You knew he was alive.""
Ryan's face tightened.
"It's not that simple.""
I laughed.
A sharp, broken sound.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
I looked around the room.
"My whole life just exploded tonight, and somehow every person involved thinks the problem is that I don't understand enough.""
I looked at the man.
"Who are you?""
He swallowed.
"My name is Daniel Parker.""
My chest tightened.
"No.""
"Emily—"
"No!""
I stepped back.
"My father's name was Daniel Parker.""
The man nodded.
"Because I am Daniel Parker.""
I stared at him.
Then at Ryan.
Then at Vanessa.
Nobody looked surprised.
That was the worst part.
Nobody looked shocked.
Except me.
"You all knew.""
Nobody answered.
My hands started shaking.
"You all knew.""
Ryan finally spoke.
"Emily, I found out the truth later.""
"Later?""
I turned on him.
"How much later?""
He didn't respond.
"How long have you known?""
His silence gave me the answer.
My voice dropped.
"How long?""
Ryan looked away.
"Four years.""
The room went completely silent.
Four years.
Four years of marriage.
Four years of waking up next to me.
Four years of watching me visit my father's grave.
Four years of hearing me say I wished I had one more conversation with him.
And he knew.
My vision blurred.
I looked at Ryan like I was seeing him for the first time.
"You let me mourn him.""
"Emily—"
"You let me cry at a grave that wasn't even his.""
Tears finally escaped.
I hated that they did.
I hated that he got to see them.
"You watched me lose my father.""
Ryan's voice became softer.
"I was trying to protect you.""
I wiped my face.
"Protect me?""
I laughed.
"You cheated on me.""
Silence.
"You lied about our money.""
Another silence.
"You hid my father from me.""
I looked at him.
"Tell me exactly what part of that was protection.""
Ryan had no answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
"He's right about one thing.""
I looked at him.
"He didn't know how to tell you.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Don't defend him.""
"I'm not.""
Daniel looked at Ryan.
"I'm telling the truth.""
Ryan looked away.
And that scared me.
Because for the first time, I saw something between them.
Not friendship.
Not loyalty.
Fear.
They were both afraid of what was coming.
I looked at Daniel.
"What happened?""
He took a deep breath.
"Your father discovered Ryan's company was involved in illegal financial deals.""
Ryan immediately looked up.
"That's not true.""
Daniel didn't even look at him.
"Your father found documents proving investors were being lied to.""
I stared at Ryan.
He shook his head.
"No.""
"Your father wanted to report it.""
Ryan's face went pale.
"Stop.""
Daniel continued.
"He was meeting me that night because he needed someone he trusted to help him.""
My heart pounded.
"The night he died?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
I felt sick.
"Then what happened?""
Daniel looked toward the window.
"I got there late.""
The room became quiet.
"I saw the car.""
My breathing stopped.
"Your father's car?""
Daniel nodded.
"I thought he was gone.""
He looked at me.
"But then I saw someone else there.""
My fingers tightened.
"Who?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
"Who was there?""
His eyes moved toward Ryan.
And my entire body went cold.
Ryan took a step back.
"No.""
Daniel finally spoke.
"Ryan.""
I couldn't hear anything after that.
Not properly.
The name echoed.
Ryan.
My husband.
The man who held my hand at my father's funeral.
The man who stood beside me while I buried my grief.
The man who told me:
"I'll always be here.""
I looked at him.
"Is he lying?""
Ryan's face changed.
Not guilt.
Panic.
"Emily, you don't understand what you saw.""
"What did you do?""
"I didn't kill your father.""
The sentence came too quickly.
Too defensively.
I froze.
Because I hadn't asked that.
I hadn't said anything about killing.
I just asked what happened.
Ryan realized his mistake immediately.
His face drained.
Vanessa whispered:
"Ryan...""
I turned slowly toward him.
"You never said you didn't kill him.""
Nobody moved.
The silence was louder than screaming.
Ryan looked trapped.
"I meant I wasn't responsible.""
"That's not what you said.""
"Emily, please.""
I stepped away.
"No.""
My voice shook.
"You don't get to ask me to trust you.""
Daniel looked at me sadly.
"Your father found out Ryan wasn't just involved with the company.""
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
"My father left this?""
I frowned.
"No.""
Daniel shook his head.
"He left it for you.""
My heart stopped.
"How?""
"He knew he might not make it.""
I stared at the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
In my father's handwriting.
The same handwriting from birthday cards.
The same handwriting from notes he left in my lunch when I was a teenager.
My hands trembled as I took it.
There was one sentence written on the back.
*Emily, if Ryan is still beside you when you read this, be careful.*
I looked up.
Ryan was staring at the envelope.
And for the first time all night...
He looked afraid of me finding the truth.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
One photograph.
My father.
Ryan.
And another person standing beside them.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who had been at every family dinner.
Every holiday.
Every important moment of my life.
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Because the person standing next to my father in that picture...
Was Vanessa's father.
