Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed

I zoomed in on the picture again.

Then again.

Like somehow my eyes would change what they were seeing.

But they didn't.

The blurry figure beside my father's car remained the same.

The height.

The posture.

The shape of his shoulders.

The jacket.

I knew that jacket.

I had bought it for him.

Three years into our marriage, Ryan had complained that his old coat was falling apart. I remembered dragging him through a department store while he insisted he didn't need anything.

"You already have five jackets," I had teased.

"Five terrible jackets," he corrected.

I laughed.

That was before I knew how many things about him were terrible.

Now I was staring at a picture that suggested my husband had been standing beside my father's car on the night my father supposedly died.

My hands began shaking.

"Emily?""

Ryan's voice sounded distant.

I looked up.

He was staring at my phone.

Not confused.

Not shocked.

Afraid.

That was the answer.

"You know this picture.""

It wasn't a question.

Ryan's face changed.

"Emily, listen to me.""

I stepped back.

"No.""

My voice was barely above a whisper.

"You don't get to say that anymore.""

I held up the phone.

"You know this picture.""

Ryan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel slowly walked closer.

His eyes were fixed on Ryan.

"Tell her.""

Ryan looked at him.

"Daniel...""

"Tell her the truth.""

Vanessa stood silently beside the stairs.

For the first time, she didn't look like my enemy.

She looked like someone who had been carrying the same weight.

The same secret.

The same nightmare.

Ryan dragged a hand through his hair.

"I was there.""

The room went silent.

Those three words were worse than any confession.

I stared at him.

"You were there.""

He nodded slightly.

"I went to meet your father.""

"Why?""

He looked down.

"Because he wanted to confront me.""

My chest tightened.

"About what?""

Ryan didn't answer.

I walked closer.

"About what?""

His eyes met mine.

"The money.""

I felt sick.

"You mean the money you stole?""

"I didn't steal it.""

"Then what did you do?""

He swallowed.

"I moved it.""

I laughed in disbelief.

"That is the same thing with a different word.""

"No, Emily.""

He stepped forward.

"I was trying to fix something.""

"You were hiding something.""

"I was scared.""

I shook my head.

"You keep saying that.""

My voice grew louder.

"But you never explain why everyone else's fear mattered more than mine.""

Ryan looked broken.

But I couldn't feel sorry for him.

Not anymore.

"What happened that night?""

He looked toward Daniel.

Then toward Vanessa.

Then back at me.

"I met your father at the old warehouse.""

I frowned.

"What warehouse?""

"The one where Thomas kept his records.""

Vanessa looked away.

"I didn't know my father used that place.""

Ryan continued.

"Your father had proof.""

"Proof of what?""

"That Thomas had been moving money through different companies.""

"And you?""

Ryan closed his eyes.

"I was involved.""

The words landed like a stone.

Not a shock anymore.

Just another piece of a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.

"How involved?""

He didn't answer.

"How involved, Ryan?""

"I signed documents.""

My stomach dropped.

"Documents?""

"I thought they were legitimate.""

"You thought?""

"I didn't know everything at first.""

"But you knew enough.""

Silence.

That was enough.

I turned away.

I needed to breathe.

I needed something solid.

Because my entire marriage suddenly felt like a room built on broken glass.

"You stood beside me at my father's funeral.""

Ryan's eyes filled.

"Emily...""

"You hugged me.""

My voice cracked.

"You told me he was proud of me.""

I turned around.

"Did you know he was lying there somewhere?""

Ryan looked devastated.

"No.""

"Did you know he was alive?""

"No.""

I studied his face.

And I hated that I believed him.

Because that was the worst part.

Ryan had lied about so much.

But maybe not everything.

And somehow that made it harder.

"Then what happened?""

Ryan sat down.

His voice became quiet.

"Your father arrived angry.""

I listened.

"He had the documents. He knew Thomas was using me.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"My father used everyone.""

Ryan looked at her.

"I know.""

She shook her head.

"No, you don't.""

Her eyes filled.

"You still talk about him like he was just a bad businessman.""

She looked at me.

"He was my father.""

There was pain in her voice.

"That doesn't mean I don't know what he was capable of.""

Ryan looked back at me.

"Your father wanted me to go to the police.""

"And did you?""

"No.""

The answer came immediately.

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

"Why?""

"Because I thought I could fix it.""

"You thought you could fix a criminal operation?""

"I thought I could separate myself from it.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"And that's when Thomas arrived.""

Ryan nodded.

The air changed.

"What happened?""

Ryan looked at the floor.

"Thomas and your father started arguing.""

"What did they say?""

"I don't remember everything.""

"Try.""

He swallowed.

"Your father said he was going to expose him.""

I looked at Daniel.

Daniel nodded.

"He was.""

Ryan continued.

"Thomas told him he would ruin everyone.""

"And then?""

Ryan's voice became softer.

"Then I left.""

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"You left?""

"I panicked.""

"You left my father there?""

"I didn't know what would happen.""

"You didn't know?""

My voice shook.

"You didn't know, so you just walked away?""

Ryan covered his face.

"I was twenty-eight, Emily.""

"And my father was trusting you.""

He had no answer.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Ryan came back.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

Ryan looked up.

Daniel's face was hard.

"He came back twenty minutes later.""

My heart stopped.

"Why?""

Ryan whispered:

"Because I realized I had made a mistake.""

I stared at him.

"What did you see?""

Ryan didn't answer.

"Ryan.""

His eyes filled.

"I saw your father's car.""

My hands went cold.

"And?""

"I saw Thomas.""

"And?""

Ryan looked at me.

"I saw your father on the ground.""

The room went quiet.

Nobody moved.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

"Was he dead?""

Ryan looked away.

"I don't know.""

That answer broke me.

"You don't know?""

"I wasn't close enough.""

"Then why didn't you call someone?""

Ryan's face collapsed.

Because he knew.

Because he knew the answer was unforgivable.

"I was scared.""

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"There it is again.""

I shook my head.

"The answer to everything.""

Ryan looked at me.

"I thought if I called the police, they would find out I was involved.""

"And you chose yourself.""

"No.""

"Yes.""

My voice became quiet.

"You chose yourself.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"There's something else.""

Ryan looked at her.

"Don't.""

She ignored him.

"I wasn't the only one who saw Ryan there that night.""

My eyes moved toward her.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"There was another person.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Vanessa.""

She looked at him.

"She deserves to know.""

My heart started racing.

"Who?""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"The person who called the police.""

I frowned.

"What?""

She looked directly at Ryan.

"Because it wasn't you.""

Ryan froze.

My chest tightened.

"Then who called?""

Vanessa whispered:

"The person who wanted your father gone.""

The lights in the kitchen suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked toward the window.

A car door slammed outside.

Ryan's face went pale.

"No.""

I turned.

"Who is that?""

Nobody answered.

Then someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Daniel whispered:

"He's here.""

My heartbeat thundered.

"Who?""

Daniel looked at Ryan.

And Ryan looked more terrified than I had ever seen him.

Then a man's voice came from the other side of the door.

A voice I recognized.

A voice I had trusted.

"Emily?""

My blood turned cold.

Because it was my father-in-law.

Ryan's father.

And he said the words that made everyone in the room go silent.

"Open the door, son.""

A pause.

May you like

Then:

"We need to finish what we started six years ago.""
