Chapter 9: The Last Letter

The old Mercer house had been empty for years.

Too many memories.

Too many ghosts.

Ethan had avoided it since his father’s funeral.

But now he stood in front of it with Claire beside him.

And he finally understood.

The truth had been waiting there all along.

Inside Daniel’s old study, Claire walked directly to the bookshelf.

Ethan watched.

“You kept it here?””

She nodded.

“Your father wanted it safe.””

She pulled out a book.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

A small envelope.

Ethan stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That the truth would destroy you.””

He opened the letter.

Daniel’s handwriting.

Real.

Familiar.

“My son,

If you have found this, then Richard’s lies finally reached you.””

Ethan read silently.

Daniel explained everything.

Richard had stolen money.

Manipulated Brooke.

Created conflicts.

But the final line made Ethan stop.

“However, Richard did not act alone.””

He turned the page.

A second name appeared.

Ethan’s face changed.

“No.””

Claire looked.

And froze.

Because the name was not Richard.

Not Brooke.

Not Evelyn.

It was someone nobody expected.

Someone who had been helping Richard from the beginning.

Someone who had access to everything.

Someone Daniel trusted.

Evelyn Mercer.

Ethan dropped the letter.

“My mother?””

Claire looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.””

Then a voice came from the doorway.

“You were never supposed to find that.””

Ethan turned.

Evelyn stood there.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

But no longer pretending.

“Mom?””

She stepped inside.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked at the letter.

“After you hated me enough.””

The words shocked him.

“Why?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Because I helped Richard.””

Claire whispered:

“Why?””

Evelyn sat down.

“Because Daniel was going to leave me.””

The room went silent.

“He found out I knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Richard had been stealing.””

Ethan stared.

“You protected him?””

“I was scared.””

“You let him destroy us.””

“I thought I could control it.””

The same excuse.

The same mistake.

Everyone had thought they could control the damage.

Everyone had been wrong.

Evelyn continued.

“Richard promised me he would fix everything.””

“By framing Claire?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“That was Brooke’s idea.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Brooke wanted revenge.””

The truth finally settled.

Everyone had a piece.

Everyone had made a choice.

And every choice had consequences.

Then the front door slammed.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the hallway.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

Richard Vale.

“You always were a difficult family to fool.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You ruined everything.””

Richard smiled.

“No.””

He looked around the room.

“Your family ruined itself.””

Police sirens sounded outside.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You should have checked the house cameras.””

Richard looked confused.

Then Ethan held up his phone.

The entire conversation had been recorded.

Richard’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Detective Harris entered behind the officers.

“Richard Vale.””

The man said nothing.

As they placed handcuffs around him, Ethan looked at the people around him.

His mother.

His sister.

His wife.

The people who broke him.

And the people who survived.

But one question remained.

One thing still bothered him.

Richard had planned everything.

But someone had sent the final photo.

The one that led him here.

The one that exposed the truth.

And as Richard was taken away, his phone fell from his pocket.

A final message appeared on the screen.

Sent five minutes earlier.

May you like

From an unknown number.

*You promised you would never reveal my name.*
