Chapter 7: The Shadow Inside the House

The security company arrived before sunrise.

Nobody slept.

Not Ethan.

Not Claire.

Not even Sophie, who woke up asking why everyone looked tired.

Ethan hated that question.

Because he didn’t know how to explain that adults could break things they spent years building.

Marcus stood in the living room with a laptop open.

“The account was accessed at 11:43 p.m.””

Ethan frowned.

“That was last night.””

“Yes.””

“Who was home?””

Claire answered quietly.

“You, me, and Sophie.””

Marcus looked at the security logs.

“Not according to this.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

“There was another device connected.””

Claire’s face changed.

“Someone was inside?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not physically.””

He turned the screen.

“A remote connection.””

Ethan stared.

Someone had accessed the account from somewhere else.

Someone who knew their systems.

Someone who knew how to hide.

Then Marcus pointed at another line.

“This is the part that bothers me.””

“What?””

“The access code.””

Ethan read it.

And felt his stomach drop.

It was an old family password.

One only three people knew.

Him.

Brooke.

And Daniel Mercer.

“My father’s password.””

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“Someone wants you to think it was your father.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What if it wasn’t?””

She stared.

“You don’t believe that.””

“No.””

But he hated that the thought existed.

That was what this entire nightmare had done.

It had made every impossible thing feel possible.

Later that afternoon, Ethan went to the old Mercer warehouse.

The place where his father spent most of his life.

He needed answers.

Not theories.

Not accusations.

Answers.

The building was almost empty.

Dust covered the shelves.

Old company signs leaned against the walls.

He found Richard Vale’s old office at the back.

The lock had been replaced.

But the door was slightly open.

Someone had been there.

Ethan stepped inside.

The room smelled like old paper and smoke.

On the desk sat a folder.

His name was written on it.

ETHAN.

His hands tightened.

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

And one letter.

Not from Richard.

From Daniel.

His father.

Ethan unfolded it.

“My son,

If you are reading this, then the truth came out too late.””

He stopped breathing.

The letter continued.

“I failed you by believing silence could protect the people I loved.””

Ethan sat down.

The words blurred.

“Brooke is not the only person who made mistakes. Richard manipulated everyone around him. But the person who hurt me most was someone I trusted like family.””

Ethan’s hands shook.

He turned the page.

Then heard footsteps.

Someone behind him.

He closed the folder.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

The footsteps moved closer.

Then a voice.

“You always were curious.””

Ethan turned.

Brooke stood in the doorway.

His anger returned instantly.

“What are you doing here?””

She looked at the folder.

“You found Dad’s letter.””

“How?””

“Because I knew it existed.””

Ethan stood.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her face hardened.

“Would you have believed me?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because he hated that he couldn’t.

Brooke stepped inside.

“I made mistakes.””

“You framed my wife.””

“I was desperate.””

“You destroyed our family.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“Richard did.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

Brooke’s voice dropped.

“He told me Dad blamed me for everything.””

“What are you talking about?””

“Richard showed me documents. He told me Dad was going to cut me out.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was angry.””

She looked away.

“And scared.””

Ethan stared.

“Why would Richard help you?””

“He didn’t.””

A pause.

“He used me.””

For the first time, Ethan saw something he never expected.

Regret.

Real regret.

Brooke continued.

“He told me if Claire was removed, the company would come back to me.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“You believed that?””

“I wanted to.””

The honesty was painful.

Before Ethan could respond, his phone rang.

Claire.

He answered.

“What happened?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Ethan…”

“What?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who entered our house last night…”

Ethan waited.

“It wasn’t a hacker.””

His blood went cold.

“Then who was it?””

Claire whispered:

“The police found a fingerprint.””

A pause.

“And Ethan…”

May you like

“What?””

“It belongs to your father.””
