Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Screen

Nobody moved.

The video kept playing.

A silent recording of the moment their family had already started falling apart.

Ethan held the phone in his hand, but his fingers had gone completely still.

“Mom?””

His voice was barely recognizable.

Evelyn looked down.

That was her answer.

Claire felt Sophie’s small hand tighten around hers.

Children noticed things adults tried to hide.

Especially fear.

Especially betrayal.

Brooke recovered first.

She stepped forward.

“Ethan, you need to understand what you’re seeing.””

He looked at her.

“What exactly am I seeing?””

Brooke opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was when Claire knew.

The woman who had spent the last hour attacking her had finally run out of words.

“You said you investigated quietly,” Claire said.

Her voice was calm now.

Too calm.

Brooke looked at her.

“I did.””

“No.””

Claire lifted the phone.

“You staged it.””

Brooke’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know that.””

“I know you were in my office.””

“That proves I was there.””

“With my laptop.””

“I was helping.””

Claire almost laughed.

“Helping?””

She pointed at the screen.

“By bringing documents to my computer in the middle of the night?””

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Claire…”

Everyone looked at her.

The older woman looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just tired.

“I can explain.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Then explain.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

For years, Ethan had admired his mother’s strength.

She was the woman who raised two children after losing her husband. The woman who kept the business alive. The woman who always told him family was everything.

Now she looked like someone who had spent years carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

“I didn’t know how far it would go.””

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at Brooke.

Then back at Ethan.

“I thought we could fix this before anyone got hurt.””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“Fix what?””

Nobody answered.

The question hung there.

Then Sophie spoke.

“Daddy?””

Ethan immediately turned.

She was crying quietly.

“Is Mommy in trouble?””

The room changed.

Because suddenly this wasn’t about money.

It wasn’t about the business.

It wasn’t about adults protecting their pride.

It was about a little girl watching her family break.

Ethan walked toward her.

“No, sweetheart.””

But he stopped.

Because he realized he couldn’t promise something he no longer understood.

Claire noticed.

And that hurt.

Not because he doubted her.

Because he was afraid.

Brooke stepped in.

“Sophie shouldn’t be hearing this.””

Claire looked at her.

“You’re right.””

Her voice sharpened.

“She shouldn’t have heard you accuse her mother of stealing.””

Brooke looked away.

For the first time, she had no comeback.

Ethan turned toward his sister.

“Why?””

Brooke crossed her arms.

“Why what?””

“Why did you do this?””

She looked offended.

“I did this because someone had to protect the company.””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You wanted to destroy Claire.””

Brooke’s face changed.

A flash of anger.

Then something colder.

“You always choose her.””

The words surprised everyone.

Ethan stared.

“What?””

Brooke laughed quietly.

“You don’t even realize it.””

“Realize what?””

“That after Dad died, you became the hero. The responsible one. The son who saved everything.””

Her voice grew louder.

“And I became the daughter nobody trusted.””

Evelyn whispered, “Brooke.””

“No, Mom. He needs to hear it.””

Brooke stepped closer.

“You got the company. You got Dad’s approval. You got the perfect wife and perfect daughter.””

She pointed at Claire.

“And I got left behind.””

Claire stared at her.

“Your jealousy doesn’t explain stealing money.””

Brooke’s eyes flashed.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

“Then who did?””

Silence.

Ethan looked around.

And for the first time, Claire saw something she had never seen before.

He wasn’t angry.

He was investigating.

He was putting pieces together.

The same way he did when solving problems at work.

He walked to the table and picked up one of the financial reports.

“Claire.””

She looked at him.

“When did these transfers happen?””

She answered immediately.

“Between March fifteenth and March nineteenth.””

Ethan froze.

“March fifteenth?””

“Yes.””

He looked at the page.

Then at the phone.

Then at his mother.

“Mom.””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

Because she knew what he had realized.

Claire stepped closer.

“What?””

Ethan turned the document around.

“The first transfer happened the day after this video.””

The room became silent.

Brooke looked uncomfortable.

Ethan continued.

“Someone planted the documents after breaking into Claire’s office.””

He looked at Brooke.

“And then someone used them to make it look like Claire did it.””

Brooke’s face hardened.

“You’re accusing me?””

“I’m asking questions.””

“You already believe her.””

“No.””

Ethan looked at the phone.

“I believe the evidence.””

The words hit Brooke harder than anger would have.

Then Claire’s phone buzzed again.

A new notification.

Another recovered file.

She opened it.

The name appeared on the screen.

A hidden recording.

Created at 2:23 a.m.

Six minutes after Brooke entered the office.

Claire pressed play.

May you like

And the first voice they heard made Ethan’s blood run cold.

Because it was his own.
