Chapter 3: The Voice He Didn’t Recognize
The recording began with silence.
Then Ethan heard himself speak.
“Mom, are you sure this will work?””
His face changed.
Claire looked at him.
Confusion replaced suspicion.
“That’s impossible.””
Nobody responded.
The audio continued.
“You said nobody would find out.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Brooke stepped backward.
The voice was Ethan’s.
But the words weren’t.
Another voice answered.
A woman’s voice.
Brooke.
“Relax. By the time Claire realizes what happened, everyone will already believe she did it.””
Claire felt sick.
She looked at Ethan.
He looked like someone had punched the air out of him.
“I never said that.””
The recording continued.
“You don’t understand,” fake Ethan said.
“Claire is careful.””
Brooke laughed.
“She trusts you.””
That sentence destroyed the room.
Because it sounded real.
Because it sounded cruel.
Ethan grabbed the phone.
He replayed the first few seconds.
Again.
Again.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“That’s not me.””
Claire watched him.
She wanted to believe him.
Every part of her wanted to.
But the voice was identical.
The timing.
The words.
Everything.
“How?”” Ethan whispered.
Then he looked at Brooke.
“What did you do?””
Brooke shook her head.
“I didn’t make that.””
“Then explain it.””
“I can’t.””
Claire looked at her.
For once, Brooke looked genuinely scared.
Not guilty.
Scared.
Evelyn slowly sat down.
Her birthday candle flickered beside her untouched cake.
“I knew this would happen.””
Ethan turned.
“You knew?””
His mother looked up.
“I knew something was wrong.””
The room went quiet.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Evelyn looked at Claire.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She didn’t answer.
Claire did.
“Of losing your daughter.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
And Claire understood.
This was never just about money.
It was about years of resentment.
Years of secrets.
Years of choosing sides.
Ethan walked away from the table.
He looked like he needed air.
Claire followed him into the hallway.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Ethan whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Claire looked at him.
“I need more than that.””
“I know.””
“You watched me stand there while everyone thought I betrayed you.””
“I know.””
“You said nothing.””
He closed his eyes.
Because he knew she was right.
“I was trying to understand.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“You were deciding whether I was guilty.””
That hurt because it was true.
Before Ethan could answer, Sophie appeared at the end of the hallway.
“Mommy?””
Claire immediately knelt.
“What happened, sweetheart?””
Sophie held a small stuffed rabbit.
“Can we go home?””
Claire’s heart broke.
“Yes.””
But then Ethan spoke.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
“I want to fix this.””
She stared at him.
“I don’t know if you can.””
The next morning, Ethan went through every company record.
Not from his office.
From home.
Because he no longer trusted anyone inside Mercer Home & Design.
By noon, he found something strange.
The consulting company that received the money had been created only three days before the first transfer.
The address was fake.
The contact number was disconnected.
But one detail stood out.
The registration paperwork had been filed using an email address.
An email address Ethan recognized.
He stared at the screen.
Then slowly opened the account records.
The owner information appeared.
And the name shocked him.
Because the fake company wasn’t created by Claire.
It wasn’t created by Brooke.
It wasn’t even created by Evelyn.
May you like
It was created using the identity of someone Ethan trusted more than anyone.
His own father.
