Chapter 6: The Promise She Never Told Him

Ethan stared at the photo until the screen blurred.

The hospital room.

The pale walls.

The machines beside his father’s bed.

And Claire.

Standing beside Daniel Mercer.

Holding a document.

His mind rejected it before his heart could even process it.

No.

Not Claire.

Not the woman who had spent the last eleven years building a life with him.

Not the woman who had looked him in the eyes while everyone accused her and still protected him from falling apart.

But the image was real.

Or at least it looked real.

“Ethan?””

Claire’s voice pulled him back.

He locked the phone.

Too quickly.

She noticed.

“What did he send you?””

He looked at her.

For one terrible second, he considered lying.

Then he remembered the dining room.

The documents.

The silence.

The way Claire’s face changed when she realized he doubted her.

“I need you to tell me something.””

Her expression shifted.

“What?””

“Did you visit my father before he died?””

The question landed differently than he expected.

Claire didn’t become angry.

She became sad.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what he was asking.

“When did you find that?””

Ethan’s chest tightened.

“So it’s true.””

“Ethan—”

“You were there.””

Claire looked down.

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“You never told me.””

“I wanted to.””

“When?””

“After.””

“After he died?””

She nodded slowly.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Ethan walked away.

“Why?””

Claire stayed silent.

And that silence frightened him.

“Claire, why were you there?””

She sat down.

Her hands trembled.

“Because your father asked me to come.””

Ethan turned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Why would my father ask my wife to visit him secretly?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because he knew he was running out of time.””

Six years earlier, Daniel Mercer had been diagnosed with a heart condition.

Everyone knew that.

What nobody knew was that two weeks before his death, Daniel discovered something wrong inside his company.

Money disappearing.

Accounts being altered.

Employees covering mistakes.

He had started investigating quietly.

And then he called Claire.

“Your father didn’t trust many people near the end,” Claire said.

Ethan stared.

“He trusted you?””

“He trusted that I loved you.””

The words hit him.

Claire continued.

“He told me he was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That after he was gone, someone would destroy the family.””

Ethan looked away.

The irony almost made him laugh.

Someone had.

But he didn’t know who yet.

“What was the document?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“A letter.””

“A letter?””

“Your father wrote instructions about the company.””

“Why hide it?””

“Because he didn’t want Brooke to see it.””

Ethan froze.

“What did it say?””

Claire hesitated.

And that hesitation brought back every fear.

“Claire.””

She looked at him.

“Your father changed his will.””

The room went silent.

“He changed it before he died?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed Brooke was making dangerous decisions.””

Ethan shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“My father loved Brooke.””

“He did.””

“Then why?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because loving someone doesn’t mean ignoring what they do.””

Ethan sat down.

The anger inside him was fighting with confusion.

“What did he leave you?””

“Nothing.””

“Then what?””

“The letter.””

“Where is it?””

Claire looked toward the hallway.

At the room where Sophie slept.

Then back at him.

“I destroyed it.””

Ethan stood.

“You what?””

“I destroyed it.””

“Why?””

“Because your father asked me to.””

That answer stopped him.

“What?””

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“He told me not to let his final decision destroy his children.””

Ethan stared.

“What decision?””

Claire looked down.

“He removed Brooke from control of the company.””

The words hung between them.

“And he made you responsible?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Claire swallowed.

“You.””

Ethan froze.

“Me?””

“He wanted you to take over everything.””

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s true.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Because he made me promise.””

“What promise?””

She looked at him.

“That I would only tell you when you were ready to lead without hating your sister.””

Ethan laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Ready?””

Claire whispered:

“I thought protecting your family meant protecting you from the truth.””

“And instead?””

She looked away.

“Instead, everyone got hurt.””

Before Ethan could answer, his phone rang.

Marcus.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?””

The investigator’s voice was urgent.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“A second account connected to Richard Vale.””

Ethan grabbed his jacket.

“Where?””

Marcus hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“The account was opened using a name that should be impossible.””

Ethan felt cold.

“What name?””

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“Daniel Mercer.””

Ethan’s father.

Again.

Impossible.

But then Marcus continued.

“And Ethan…”

“What?””

“The account was accessed yesterday.””

Ethan stopped.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“The login came from inside your house.””

Ethan looked slowly toward the staircase.

May you like

Toward the room where his family slept.

And for the first time, he wondered if the person watching them had never left.
