Chapter 5: The Person Watching Them

The police called it a threat.

Ethan called it a warning.

Because warnings meant someone still had a choice.

This felt different.

This felt like someone had already decided how the story would end.

Sophie slept in their bedroom that night.

Not because she was scared.

Because Claire was.

She sat beside her daughter’s bed, watching the little girl breathe.

Seven years old.

Too young to understand betrayal.

Too young to know that the people sitting around the birthday table had almost destroyed everything.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

“I should have believed you.””

Claire didn’t look up.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But he deserved it.

“I was wrong.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

He stepped inside.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me tonight.””

“No.””

“I just want you to know something.””

She finally looked at him.

“What?””

“I never stopped loving you.””

Claire’s expression softened for half a second.

Then disappeared.

“Love doesn’t mean much when you don’t trust someone.””

Ethan accepted that.

Because she was right.

The next morning, they met with a private investigator.

His name was Marcus Reed.

He had worked with Mercer Home & Design before and knew the family history.

After reviewing the evidence, Marcus leaned back.

“This wasn’t a simple theft.””

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Someone wanted Claire blamed.””

“We know that.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“They didn’t just want her blamed.””

He pointed at the documents.

“They wanted Ethan to believe she betrayed him.””

Claire looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because once trust is gone, people destroy themselves.””

The words stayed with them.

Marcus spent hours tracing the fake company.

By evening, he found something.

A connection.

A name.

Someone who had been quietly involved with Mercer Home & Design for years.

Someone who knew their systems.

Their passwords.

Their family.

Ethan looked at the name.

“No.””

Marcus watched him carefully.

“You know this person?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Claire saw his face.

“Who is it?””

Slowly, Ethan turned the laptop toward her.

The name appeared.

And Claire felt the same cold feeling she had during the dinner.

Because the person behind the fake company wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t Brooke.

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It was someone who had attended their wedding.

Someone who had held Sophie as a baby.

Someone who had always called Ethan family.

Claire whispered:

“Your father’s business partner?””

Ethan nodded.

“Richard Vale.””

Marcus continued.

“He had access to company accounts before your father died.””

“But he retired.””

“Officially.””

Ethan stared.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus opened another file.

“Richard Vale never retired.””

He clicked.

“He disappeared.””

The room went silent.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a voice.

An older man.

Calm.

Almost friendly.

“Ethan.””

His blood ran cold.

Because he knew that voice.

“Richard?””

A soft laugh came through the phone.

“You finally found me.””

Ethan stood.

“Where are you?””

Another laugh.

“I’m where I’ve always been.””

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“The truth.””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“The truth about what?””

The voice became quieter.

“The night your father died.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“You think Brooke lied to destroy your family.””

A pause.

“But Brooke only told the first lie.””

Claire stepped closer.

Ethan gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard’s answer came softly.

“The biggest secret in your family…”

The call suddenly cut.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then a message appeared.

One photo.

One sentence.

The photo showed a hospital room from six years earlier.

And beside his dying father’s bed stood Claire.

Crying.

Holding a document.

A document Ethan had never seen before.

May you like

The message underneath said:

*Ask your wife what she promised your father before he died.*
