Chapter 9: The Truth Written Before Birth
Daniel stared at the file on the dining table.
*SOPHIA DANIELSON — ORIGINAL IDENTITY RECORDS*
The title alone made his stomach twist.
For days, every secret in the mansion had led back to one thing.
Sophia.
Her food.
Her fear.
Her photographs.
Her questions.
Her tears.
Everyone had used her as a piece in a game she never agreed to play.
And now there was another secret.
Her identity.
Daniel slowly reached for the file.
The person sitting across from him watched quietly.
Too quietly.
Like they already knew what was inside.
Maria stood beside Daniel.
Her voice trembled.
“Don’t open that.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
“Because I don’t know what’s in it.””
That answer surprised him.
After everything.
After all the lies.
Maria was still the one person who admitted when she didn’t know.
Daniel opened the file.
The first page was a copy of Sophia’s birth certificate.
At first glance, everything looked normal.
Name.
Date of birth.
Parents.
Then he saw the problem.
A second document was attached.
An older version.
The original record.
Daniel’s eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Maria gasped.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
She was staring at the paper.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Maria.””
She backed away.
“That’s not possible.””
Daniel looked down again.
The information was clear.
The original record listed a different mother.
Not Maria.
Another name.
A name Daniel had never seen before.
*Evelyn Hartman.*
The room became silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel looked at the person across the table.
“You knew.””
The person didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
Maria looked horrified.
“You knew Sophia was connected to her?””
“Yes.””
Daniel’s anger rose.
“You knew and you said nothing?””
The person calmly replied:
“You weren’t ready.””
Daniel slammed the file shut.
“Don’t tell me what I’m ready for.””
The person remained calm.
“That reaction is exactly why.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You have been manipulating my family for years.””
“No.””
The person shook their head.
“I have been preventing something worse.””
Maria looked at them.
“By hurting my daughter?””
The person’s expression changed slightly.
A small crack.
“She is not your daughter.””
Daniel immediately moved between them.
“Careful.””
The person looked at him.
“You need the truth.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“What I need is for you to stop pretending cruelty is honesty.””
Detective Collins arrived fifteen minutes later.
Daniel had called him immediately.
No more secrets.
No more private conversations.
No more trusting anyone without proof.
The file was placed on the table.
Collins studied it carefully.
“This changes everything.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Explain.””
The detective looked at Maria.
“Did you know about this?””
Maria shook her head.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I carried Sophia. I raised Sophia. I love Sophia.””
She looked at Daniel.
“She is my daughter.””
Collins nodded.
“I believe you.””
Daniel looked at the original document.
“But biologically?””
The detective sighed.
“We need a DNA test.””
Maria closed her eyes.
The words hurt.
Even though nobody had accused her.
Even though nobody blamed her.
A test still felt like someone was questioning the only thing she had never doubted.
Her motherhood.
Daniel reached for her hand.
“We’ll find the truth.””
Maria whispered:
“What if the truth changes everything?””
Daniel looked at Sophia’s photo on the table.
A picture taken before all of this.
A picture of a smiling little girl.
“It won’t.””
Vanessa was brought downstairs.
When she saw the file, her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Daniel noticed.
“You knew.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I knew there were documents.””
“What documents?””
She stayed silent.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You spent months hurting my daughter, and now you’re going to tell me everything.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“You think I’m the worst person here.””
Daniel said nothing.
“You should.””
Her voice became bitter.
“But I was never the one in control.””
“Who was?””
Vanessa looked toward the hidden room.
“The person who recruited me.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your father.””
Daniel froze.
“You already told me that.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn’t tell you everything.””
The room became tense.
“What did my father do?””
Vanessa looked at Maria.
Then at Daniel.
“Your father believed families were systems.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“I know about the project.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You know the name.””
She pointed at the file.
“You don’t know the purpose.””
Daniel waited.
Vanessa continued.
“Your father didn’t create the project to build a perfect family.””
“Then why?””
“To find out whether love could be controlled.””
Silence.
Maria whispered:
“That’s insane.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at Sophia’s photo.
“He believed children were the strongest emotional connection people had.””
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“So he used Sophia.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He used the possibility of losing Sophia.””
Daniel understood.
The test wasn’t about the child.
It was about him.
His reactions.
His choices.
His loyalty.
Everything had been designed to see what he would do under pressure.
That night, Daniel sat alone in his office.
The mansion was quiet.
Too quiet.
He looked through everything they had collected.
His father’s journal.
Vanessa’s files.
The hidden recordings.
Then he found something strange.
A video file that had not appeared before.
Date:
The day Sophia was born.
Daniel opened it.
The recording showed a hospital room.
His heart stopped.
Because he saw himself.
Younger.
Exhausted.
Holding newborn Sophia.
Maria beside him.
Everything looked normal.
Then another person entered the room.
His father.
Daniel watched.
His father approached the baby.
And said:
“She will be the beginning.””
Daniel froze.
The younger version of himself looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
His father smiled.
“You’ll understand someday.””
The video continued.
Then came the part Daniel had never seen.
After he left the room, his father stayed.
With Maria.
With Sophia.
And with another person.
A woman.
Evelyn Hartman.
Alive.
Not missing.
Standing beside his father.
Daniel stopped the video.
His hands shook.
Evelyn wasn’t just connected to the project.
She had been there from the beginning.
The next morning, the DNA results arrived.
Nobody wanted to open them.
Especially Maria.
Daniel held the envelope.
Sophia was playing in the garden.
Laughing.
For the first time in days.
That sound reminded him of something important.
The truth could change history.
But it could never change love.
He opened the envelope.
Read the first line.
Then closed his eyes.
Maria looked at him.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked up.
His eyes were wet.
“You’re her mother.””
Maria broke down.
A mixture of relief and pain.
“But…”
Daniel hesitated.
Maria saw it.
“What?””
He handed her the paper.
The test confirmed Maria’s relationship with Sophia.
But another result was included.
A second comparison.
One that had not been requested.
A match.
With Evelyn Hartman.
Maria stared.
“What does this mean?””
Daniel looked toward the garden.
Toward Sophia.
The answer was impossible.
Evelyn was not just connected to Sophia.
She was her biological mother.
The original record had been changed.
Maria had not given birth to Sophia.
But she had become her mother.
Daniel sat down slowly.
Everything they believed had been rewritten.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
A voice he had heard before.
From the hospital video.
Evelyn.
“Daniel.””
His blood ran cold.
“Where are you?””
A soft laugh.
“I’ve been watching you search for me.””
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“Why did you do this?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because Sophia was never supposed to belong to Maria.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“She belongs to the person who loves her.””
Another pause.
Then Evelyn said:
“That’s why I need to know something.””
“What?””
Her voice became quiet.
“After everything you discovered…”
A pause.
“Do you still believe Maria deserves to keep my daughter?””
Daniel looked through the window.
At Sophia.
At Maria.
At the family someone had tried so hard to destroy.
And he realized the final battle was no longer about uncovering the truth.
It was about protecting the family that chose each other.

Then Evelyn said one last thing:
“Because tomorrow, I’m coming to take Sophia home.””
