Chapter 7: The Secret Beneath the Mansion

Daniel stared at the message on his phone.

*“Ask Maria what she found in the basement.””*

The words were simple.

But they carried the same feeling as every other message.

Someone was not trying to hide.

Someone was guiding them.

Leading them from one secret to another.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Maria noticed his expression.

“What is it?””

He looked at her.

“Someone wants me to ask you a question.””

Her face changed.

“About what?””

“The basement.””

The color drained from Maria’s face.

Daniel noticed immediately.

That reaction told him more than any answer.

“You know something.””

Maria looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice wasn’t angry.

It was hurt.

“Not again.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want to hide anything else.””

“But you did.””

Maria swallowed.

“Yes.””

The word sat between them.

Heavy.

Daniel looked toward Sophia.

She was still sitting on the bed, watching them quietly.

He lowered his voice.

“We talk downstairs.””

Maria nodded.

The basement door had always been one of the most ordinary doors in the mansion.

A simple wooden door.

A normal lock.

Nothing suspicious.

But after everything Daniel had discovered, even ordinary things felt dangerous.

He unlocked it.

The lights flickered.

Maria stood behind him.

“You never came down here?””

“Not in years.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because your father told me never to.””

Daniel stopped.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After we got married.””

Daniel frowned.

“What did he say?””

Maria looked at the dark stairs.

“He said some parts of the mansion were better left untouched.””

Daniel almost laughed.

Almost.

But nothing about this situation was funny.

He turned on the lights.

The basement stretched beneath the mansion.

Old furniture.

Storage boxes.

Wine shelves.

Nothing unusual.

Until Maria pointed.

“There.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

At the far end was a small metal door.

Not wooden.

Not decorative.

A security door.

His expression changed.

“That wasn’t here before.””

Maria nodded.

“It was.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I found it.””

“When?””

Maria looked down.

“Two months ago.””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Two months.

Again.

The same time everything changed.

“Open it.””

Maria stepped forward.

“I don’t have the key.””

Daniel examined the lock.

Then noticed something.

A fingerprint scanner.

Sophisticated.

Hidden.

Someone had invested money into keeping this place secret.

He pulled out his phone.

“Detective Collins.””

Twenty minutes later, the basement was filled with police equipment.

Detective Collins studied the door.

“This isn’t a normal storage room.””

“No kidding,” Daniel replied.

Collins looked at him.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Daniel frowned.

“Good?””

“Anger means you’re paying attention.””

The detective looked at the door.

“But don’t let it make decisions for you.””

Daniel stepped back.

The scanner was bypassed.

The lock clicked.

Everyone became silent.

The door opened slowly.

Inside was another room.

A hidden room.

Smaller than the one upstairs.

But somehow worse.

Because this one wasn’t filled with pictures.

It was filled with recordings.

Hundreds of files.

Hard drives.

Documents.

Audio tapes.

Detective Collins walked inside.

“Whoever built this wanted information.””

Daniel looked around.

“About who?””

Collins picked up a file.

“You.””

Daniel took it.

The label read:

*DANIELSON FAMILY — OBSERVATION RECORDS*

His stomach tightened.

He opened it.

The first page was dated years ago.

Before he met Maria.

Before Sophia was born.

The notes weren’t about Vanessa.

They weren’t about Maria.

They were about him.

*Subject demonstrates strong protective instincts but limited awareness of emotional manipulation.*

Daniel stared.

Someone had been studying him.

For years.

Maria found another file.

Her hands shook.

“Daniel…”

He turned.

“What?””

She handed it to him.

The label:

*MARIA DANIELSON*

Inside were pages describing her.

Her childhood.

Her fears.

Her habits.

Her weaknesses.

Maria covered her mouth.

“How could someone know all this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he found his own file again.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

*“The child will be the final test.””*

Daniel froze.

The room became silent.

Sophia.

The final test.

Not Vanessa.

Not Maria.

His daughter.

Detective Collins looked over.

“What did you find?””

Daniel handed him the paper.

The detective’s expression changed.

“This is not just harassment.””

“What is it?””

Collins looked at the files around them.

“This is a long-term behavioral experiment.””

Maria shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

The detective looked serious.

“Someone has been trying to engineer your family.””

Daniel searched through the files faster.

Names.

Dates.

Reports.

Then he found something that made him stop.

A photograph.

Not of Sophia.

Not of Maria.

Of Vanessa.

But the date shocked him.

It was taken before Vanessa ever moved into the mansion.

Before she became close to the family.

On the back was written:

*“Candidate selected.””*

Daniel looked at Vanessa’s file.

There were hundreds of pages.

Her fears.

Her desires.

Her obsession with him.

Someone had studied Vanessa too.

“She wasn’t the creator,” Daniel whispered.

Maria looked at him.

“What?””

“She was chosen.””

Detective Collins nodded slowly.

“Someone identified her as useful.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa’s file.

“She was manipulated.””

“Yes.””

“But she still hurt my daughter.””

Collins nodded.

“Both things can be true.””

They found the audio files next.

The oldest one was labeled:

*Meeting One.*

Daniel pressed play.

A voice filled the room.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Professional.

“People believe families are built through love.””

A pause.

“They are wrong.””

Daniel froze.

The voice continued.

“Families are built through control.””

Maria grabbed his arm.

The recording continued.

“To create the perfect family, remove emotional weaknesses.””

Daniel stared at the speaker.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The voice continued.

“Daniel must believe he is protecting his family.””

A second voice asked:

“And the wife?””

The first voice replied:

“She is the variable.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

Maria whispered:

“Me.””

The recording continued.

“And the child?””

A pause.

Then:

“The child determines whether the system succeeds.””

The file ended.

Nobody moved.

Sophia was not a target because Vanessa hated her.

Sophia was a target because someone believed she was the key to controlling Daniel.

Suddenly, another file appeared on the computer screen.

Newly accessed.

Detective Collins frowned.

“We didn’t open that.””

Daniel walked closer.

The file name was:

*FINAL INTERVIEW — SOPHIA*

Maria immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

The date was yesterday.

While he was still away.

Someone had interviewed his daughter.

He clicked.

The video loaded.

Sophia appeared on screen.

Sitting alone.

Holding her rabbit.

Daniel felt sick.

A person sat across from her.

Only their hands were visible.

A voice spoke.

“Do you love your daddy?””

Sophia nodded.

“Yes.””

“Do you love your mommy?””

“Yes.””

“Who do you want to live with?””

Sophia looked confused.

“I want everyone.””

The person laughed softly.

“That’s not possible.””

Sophia lowered her eyes.

The voice continued.

“If you had to choose…”

The video suddenly cut.

Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.

“No.””

Maria was crying.

Someone had forced their daughter into a choice.

A choice no child should ever make.

Then the video resumed.

Only for a few seconds.

The person leaned closer.

And Sophia whispered something.

Something that made Daniel freeze.

“Please don’t make me choose.””

The person asked:

“Why?””

Sophia looked directly at the camera.

And said:

“Because Grandpa told me you’re not the real person helping us.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Now you understand.””

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

A quiet laugh.

“Someone who has been protecting your family from the beginning.””

Daniel looked at the files.

The hidden rooms.

The recordings.

The manipulation.

“You call this protection?””

The voice replied:

“Yes.””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Closer than you think.””

The call ended.

At that exact moment, Detective Collins looked toward the basement entrance.

His face changed.

“Daniel.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Collins pointed.

The basement door was slowly closing.

Nobody was near it.

Nobody had touched it.

But before it shut completely, a figure appeared in the narrow opening.

A familiar figure.

Someone from the mansion.

Someone who should not have been there.

And the last thing Daniel saw before the door closed was a face he recognized.

Maria’s face.

May you like

Except Maria was standing beside him.

Which meant someone else was wearing her identity.
