Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Plan

Daniel read the message three times.

*“Now you’ll find out why Sophia was never the only target.””*

The words felt like a warning.

Or a threat.

Maria stood beside him, staring at his phone.

“Who sent that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he already knew one thing.

Whoever sent it was watching.

Watching the mansion.

Watching them.

Watching every move they made.

He looked around the room.

The hidden photographs.

The reports.

The secret files.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

This was not a room Vanessa created because she was obsessed.

This was a room created because someone believed they had control over his family.

“Daniel,” Maria whispered.

He looked at her.

“We need to call the police.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

But before he could reach for his phone, Vanessa laughed.

A quiet, bitter laugh.

Everyone turned toward her.

“You still don’t understand.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Understand what?””

“That this isn’t about me.””

Her eyes moved toward the laptop screen.

“You think I built all of this?””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa looked exhausted now.

Like she had been holding a secret too heavy for too long.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then tell me who did.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I can’t.””

“You can’t?””

“No.””

“Or you won’t?””

Her silence answered.

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“Your brother attacked me.””

Grant immediately looked up.

“Don’t bring me into this.””

“You were here.””

“I didn’t know what was happening.””

Daniel pointed toward the screen.

“Then explain why you were in that video.””

Grant froze.

Maria looked confused.

“What video?””

Daniel turned the laptop.

On the screen was another paused frame.

A reflection in the glass.

A person standing behind Vanessa during one of the meetings.

Grant.

His face visible.

His presence undeniable.

Grant swallowed.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

“No?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“You were part of the plan.””

Grant shook his head.

“I was helping my sister.””

Vanessa looked at him sharply.

“Stop.””

Daniel noticed.

Again.

Fear.

Not between enemies.

Between partners.

“What are you afraid he’ll say?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Grant looked at her.

“You said this would stay under control.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

There.

A confession.

Small.

But real.

“What would stay under control?””

Grant looked at the floor.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Grant.””

But it was too late.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Grant looked up.

His face was full of regret.

“The plan was supposed to make Maria leave.””

Maria went still.

“What?””

Grant continued.

“We wanted Daniel to believe she was unstable.””

Daniel stared.

“You wanted me to divorce my wife?””

“Yes.””

Maria looked at Vanessa.

“And Sophia?””

Grant hesitated.

That hesitation was worse than an answer.

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“Say it.””

Grant swallowed.

“Sophia was supposed to become attached to Vanessa.””

Maria’s eyes filled with tears.

“You used my child.””

Grant looked away.

“I didn’t know it would go this far.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You helped create the situation.””

“I never told her to starve Sophia.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted:

“Enough!””

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time, she looked truly broken.

Not exposed.

Broken.

“I never wanted this.””

Daniel stared.

“You never wanted what?””

Vanessa looked at Sophia’s empty bowl sitting on the kitchen counter.

Her voice lowered.

“I wanted her to stop loving Maria.””

The room became silent.

Maria looked horrified.

Daniel felt anger rising.

“She is three years old.””

“I know.””

“She is a child.””

“I know!””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“I know.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because she had something I never had.””

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“What?””

“A family.””

The police arrived forty minutes later.

Daniel refused to let anyone leave.

Vanessa.

Grant.

Everyone.

The officers searched the room and collected the documents.

But Daniel knew something was missing.

The person who sent the message.

The person behind the plan.

The person who knew his schedule.

A detective named Collins stood in the office reviewing the files.

“You’re saying someone planned to manipulate custody?””

“Yes.””

“And you believe Vanessa wasn’t acting alone?””

Daniel nodded.

“Someone gave her instructions.””

Detective Collins looked at the documents.

“These reports are unusual.””

“How?””

“They’re written like a psychological evaluation.””

Daniel frowned.

“Meaning?””

“Someone with training created them.””

Maria looked at the papers.

“Are you saying Vanessa had help from a professional?””

The detective nodded.

“Possibly.””

Daniel felt a chill.

This wasn’t just someone angry.

Someone had studied them.

Their routines.

Their emotions.

Their weaknesses.

The detective picked up another document.

“Do you recognize this name?””

Daniel looked.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

*Dr. Evelyn Hart.*

Maria’s face changed.

Daniel noticed.

“Maria?””

She looked nervous.

“I know that name.””

“From where?””

She hesitated.

“Vanessa mentioned her.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

Daniel stared.

“What did she say?””

Maria looked down.

“She said Dr. Hart could help with family problems.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Family problems?””

Maria nodded.

“She told me Vanessa was seeing someone.””

Detective Collins looked up.

“Seeing someone?””

Maria nodded.

“I thought it was a therapist.””

Daniel picked up the document.

The signature was clear.

Dr. Evelyn Hart.

A licensed family counselor.

Someone who specialized in child behavior.

Someone who knew exactly how to influence a family.

That night, Daniel sat beside Sophia’s bed.

She was asleep.

Finally peaceful.

For the first time in days, she wasn’t holding an empty bowl.

She was holding her rabbit toy.

Daniel watched her breathing.

Then his phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Another message.

He stared at it.

Then opened it.

A photograph.

His heart stopped.

It was a picture of him sitting beside Sophia’s bed.

Taken minutes ago.

From outside the window.

Below the image was a message:

*“You should have stayed away longer.””*

Daniel immediately stood.

He looked toward the window.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

He grabbed his phone and called Detective Collins.

“Someone is outside.””

Within minutes, officers searched the property.

But they found nothing.

No footprints.

No person.

No camera.

Nothing.

Except one thing.

Near the garden wall.

A small envelope.

Daniel opened it carefully.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Three words.

*“Ask your father.””*

Daniel froze.

His father.

Why his father?

He had been dead for eight years.

Maria looked at him.

“What does it mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because another memory had returned.

A conversation from years ago.

His father had once warned him:

“Daniel, the people closest to you will always know where to hurt you.””

At the time, he thought it was about business.

Now he wasn’t sure.

The next morning, Daniel drove to his father’s old office.

The building had been empty since his death.

Nobody had entered in years.

But when Daniel unlocked the door, something was different.

The dust was disturbed.

Someone had been there.

Recently.

He walked inside.

The old office smelled like paper and wood.

On the desk was a file.

Waiting.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were documents.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Dates.

And one shocking discovery.

A payment made six months earlier.

To Vanessa.

Daniel stared.

“No…”

Maria, standing behind him, looked over his shoulder.

“Your father paid her?””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

But the evidence was there.

His father’s company account.

A large transfer.

And the description:

*Project Sophia.*

Maria stepped back.

“Daniel…”

He couldn’t move.

Because his dead father had been connected to this from the beginning.

And then he found the final page.

A handwritten note.

His father’s handwriting.

Daniel knew it instantly.

The note said:

*“If you are reading this, then Vanessa failed.””*

Daniel’s heart raced.

He turned the page.

The next sentence was worse.

*“But the person controlling her is still inside your family.””*

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Daniel turned.

The office door was open.

Someone had been standing there.

Watching.

And on the floor was a small pink bowl.

Sophia’s bowl.

May you like

With a new message written inside:

*“You’re getting closer.””*
