Chapter 6: The Father’s Last Warning

Daniel stared at the pink bowl sitting on the floor of his father’s abandoned office.

For a moment, he couldn’t move.

The object looked harmless.

A child’s bowl.

Something that belonged in a kitchen.

Not in a locked office filled with secrets.

Not beside a message from someone who had been watching them.

Maria stepped closer.

“Daniel…”

He raised one hand.

“Don’t touch it.””

His voice was low.

Careful.

The same voice he used when he knew something was dangerous.

Maria stopped.

The note inside the bowl remained visible.

*“You’re getting closer.””*

Someone had been here.

Someone had entered this building.

Someone had known exactly where they would look.

Daniel looked around the office.

The old furniture.

The dusty shelves.

The photographs of his childhood.

Everything felt different now.

His father had spent his entire life teaching him to question people.

And Daniel had ignored the lesson.

Because he believed family was the one place where he could lower his guard.

He was wrong.

“Call Detective Collins,” he said.

Maria pulled out her phone.

Daniel walked toward the desk again.

The file remained open.

His father’s handwriting stared back at him.

*“If you are reading this, then Vanessa failed.””*

Failed at what?

Manipulating him?

Destroying his marriage?

Taking Sophia away?

Daniel picked up the documents.

The payment records were real.

Six months earlier.

Money transferred to Vanessa.

But something bothered him.

His father had been dead for eight years.

So why was his name connected to a plan that started only months ago?

Unless…

Someone had access to his father’s accounts.

Someone had used his name.

A shadow moved near the doorway.

Daniel turned instantly.

“Who’s there?””

Nothing.

He walked toward the hall.

Empty.

Only the sound of old pipes and the wind outside.

Maria came behind him.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He looked at her.

“Someone is playing with us.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“They’re not just threatening us.””

He looked at the bowl.

“They’re controlling the story.””

Detective Collins arrived twenty minutes later.

He examined the bowl, the note, and the documents.

“This is becoming more serious.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“It was already serious.””

The detective looked at him.

“You’re right.””

He picked up the payment records.

“Your father’s accounts were managed by a private financial company after his death.””

“Who had access?””

“We’re checking.””

Daniel stared.

“Check faster.””

Collins understood the frustration.

But he remained calm.

“Mr. Danielson, whoever is behind this has planned carefully. They want you angry.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because angry people make mistakes.””

Daniel looked toward Maria.

She understood immediately.

The person behind this wanted him to attack Vanessa.

To blame Grant.

To destroy everyone around him.

While the real person remained hidden.

Detective Collins continued.

“There’s another problem.””

“What?””

“The doctor’s name.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Dr. Evelyn Hart?””

Collins nodded.

“She doesn’t exist.””

Maria’s face changed.

“What?””

“We checked licensing records.””

The detective placed a file on the desk.

“There is no registered therapist by that name.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“So Vanessa lied.””

“Possibly.””

“Or someone created a fake identity.””

Collins nodded.

“That’s more likely.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

A fake doctor.

A hidden room.

A psychological plan.

Someone had put a lot of effort into destroying his family.

The detective pointed at one document.

“This signature is interesting.””

Daniel looked.

“What about it?””

“It isn’t a doctor’s signature.””

“Then whose is it?””

Collins stared at the page.

“Someone who studied your family.””

When Daniel returned to the mansion that evening, he found Vanessa sitting alone in the living room.

No confidence.

No attitude.

Just silence.

He almost walked past her.

Then she spoke.

“Did you find my payment?””

Daniel stopped.

Slowly turned.

“You know about it.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

“Who paid you?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know what it was.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was stupid.””

The answer surprised him.

She continued.

“I thought someone finally understood me.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the fireplace.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

“My father died eight years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Before he died, he contacted me.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

“He knew I was close to you.””

Daniel felt disgusted.

“Close?””

Vanessa looked away.

“He knew I loved you.””

Maria, standing behind Daniel, went still.

Vanessa continued.

“He said you would never see what was right in front of you.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“My father encouraged you?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He warned me.””

“About what?””

“That Maria would ruin your life.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Maria looked hurt.

“He said that?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He told me Maria was weak. That she would make you choose between your business and your family.””

Daniel stared.

This was not the father he remembered.

Or maybe it was.

Maybe there were parts of him Daniel never knew.

“What else did he say?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“He said Sophia was the key.””

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He said children reveal the truth about people.””

Maria stepped forward.

“You’re lying.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I wish I was.””

That night, Daniel searched through every remaining document from his father’s office.

He found old letters.

Business records.

Personal notes.

Then he found a journal.

The last entry was dated three days before his father died.

Daniel opened it.

The handwriting was shaky.

*“I made a mistake.””*

He kept reading.

*“I believed control was the same as protection.””*

Daniel frowned.

Another page.

*“I created something I could not stop.””*

Maria looked over his shoulder.

“What is that?””

Daniel turned the page.

A name appeared.

*The Family Preservation Project.*

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

The same phrase appeared in the files.

The same language used in Sophia’s reports.

His father had started it.

Years ago.

But why?

He read further.

*“The goal was simple. Identify weaknesses. Remove threats. Build a perfect family structure.””*

Daniel closed the journal.

“This is impossible.””

Maria looked at him.

“What if it isn’t?””

He looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“What if Vanessa didn’t create this?””

Daniel went silent.

“She continued something your father started.””

The thought was terrifying.

Because it meant this wasn’t revenge.

It was inheritance.

Someone had continued his father’s work.

Someone had taken an old plan and used his daughter as a target.

A sound came from upstairs.

Sophia screamed.

Daniel ran.

Maria followed.

They reached Sophia’s room.

The little girl was standing on her bed.

Terrified.

Daniel rushed to her.

“What happened?””

Sophia pointed toward the closet.

“She was there.””

Daniel looked.

“Who?””

Sophia started crying.

“Grandpa.””

Daniel froze.

Maria looked confused.

“Your grandfather?””

Sophia nodded.

“He talked to Vanessa.””

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“Sophia, sweetheart, Grandpa has been gone for a long time.””

“I know.””

“Then what did you see?””

Sophia hugged her rabbit.

“He was in the room.””

Daniel slowly approached.

“What room?””

Sophia whispered:

“The secret room.””

Maria looked at Daniel.

Neither spoke.

Because they both knew what she meant.

The locked room.

The room filled with photographs.

The room created for Sophia.

“How long ago?”” Daniel asked.

Sophia thought.

“Before Daddy came home.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Before he came home.

Someone had been in that room recently.

Someone Sophia saw.

But then she said something else.

Something that made Daniel’s blood run cold.

“Grandpa told Vanessa she had one more job.””

Daniel crouched.

“What job?””

Sophia looked at him with frightened eyes.

“He said…”

She swallowed.

“He said she had to make Daddy hate Mommy.””

The room became silent.

Then Sophia whispered:

“But Vanessa wasn’t listening to Grandpa.””

Daniel froze.

“Why?””

Sophia looked toward the closet.

“Because Grandpa wasn’t real.””

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.

“What do you mean?””

Sophia hugged her toy tighter.

“I told Vanessa there was nobody there.””

Daniel stared.

“What happened next?””

Sophia’s voice became smaller.

“Vanessa said…”

She looked terrified.

“She said the person pretending to be Grandpa was coming back.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Because suddenly Daniel understood.

His father was not behind the plan.

Someone was using his father’s memory.

Someone was manipulating Vanessa.

Someone who knew everything about his family.

And then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Another message.

Unknown number.

This time, only one sentence:

*“Ask Maria what she found in the basement.””*
