Chapter 8: The Woman in the Basement

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The basement door remained closed.

The image Daniel had seen before it shut burned into his mind.

Maria’s face.

The same eyes.

The same hair.

The same expression.

But impossible.

Because Maria was standing right beside him.

Her hand was still wrapped around his arm.

Her breathing was shaky.

“Daniel…”

He didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on the door.

Detective Collins slowly reached for his weapon.

“Everyone stay back.””

Maria looked terrified.

“Who was that?””

Daniel finally looked at her.

“That’s what I want to know.””

The words hurt her.

He saw it.

The suspicion.

The doubt.

And he hated that.

But too many secrets had been hidden from him.

Too many people had lied.

He couldn’t ignore what he saw.

The detective moved toward the door.

“Could have been a reflection.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Mr. Danielson—”

“I saw her.””

The detective studied his face.

“Then we need to confirm what you saw.””

He opened the basement door.

The hallway outside was empty.

No footsteps.

No movement.

Nothing.

Only silence.

Daniel walked out.

He searched every corner.

The mansion was still.

Too still.

Then he noticed something on the floor.

A small object.

A silver pendant.

He picked it up.

Maria immediately recognized it.

Her face changed.

“That’s mine.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

She nodded.

“I lost it years ago.””

“Where?””

Maria stared at the pendant.

“In this mansion.””

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

Years ago.

Not months.

Not recently.

Someone had been inside this family’s life for much longer than they realized.

They searched the mansion until sunrise.

No hidden person.

No secret passage.

No explanation.

But Daniel refused to believe it was nothing.

At seven in the morning, Detective Collins gathered everyone in the living room.

Vanessa.

Grant.

Maria.

The house staff.

Nobody was allowed to leave.

“Someone in this house has been manipulating events for a long time,” Collins said.

Vanessa sat quietly.

For once, she wasn’t fighting.

Grant looked exhausted.

Daniel stood near the window.

Watching his mansion.

The place where his daughter should have been safe.

“Before we continue,” Collins said, “I need everyone to answer one question.””

Nobody spoke.

“Has anyone here ever seen another woman who looks like Maria?””

Silence.

Then the housekeeper slowly raised her hand.

Everyone turned.

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

The elderly woman looked nervous.

“I thought I was imagining things.””

“Explain.””

She swallowed.

“Three years ago, I saw Mrs. Danielson walking through the east hallway.””

Maria looked confused.

“That was impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I was out of town.””

The housekeeper nodded.

“I knew something was wrong because she didn’t answer when I called her name.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What happened?””

“She turned around.””

The housekeeper’s hands trembled.

“And she looked like Mrs. Danielson.””

“But?””

“But she wasn’t.””

The room became silent.

“How do you know?””

The woman looked at Maria.

“Because Mrs. Danielson always wears a bracelet on her right wrist.””

Maria looked down.

She was wearing one.

“The woman I saw had the same face,” the housekeeper continued.

“But?””

“No bracelet.””

Daniel felt a chill.

Someone had been impersonating Maria.

For years.

Later that morning, Daniel sat with Sophia in the garden.

She was eating breakfast.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He noticed she kept looking at the food.

Like she was afraid it would disappear.

“Sweetheart.””

Sophia looked up.

“Yes, Daddy?””

“Do you know that you can always ask for food?””

She nodded.

“But?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Sometimes people get angry.””

Daniel’s heart broke.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

He waited.

Children often told the truth when adults stopped demanding it.

Finally, Sophia whispered:

“Not Vanessa.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“What?””

“She was mean.””

A pause.

“But she wasn’t the scariest.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“Who was?””

Sophia looked around.

Then whispered:

“The other Mommy.””

Daniel felt cold.

“The other Mommy?””

Sophia nodded.

“She looked like Mommy.””

Maria, sitting nearby, covered her mouth.

Daniel kept his voice calm.

“What did she do?””

Sophia squeezed her rabbit.

“She came to my room at night.””

“When?””

“Before you came home.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“What did she say?””

Sophia looked afraid.

“She said Mommy was making mistakes.””

Maria shook her head.

“No.””

Sophia continued.

“She said Daddy would understand when the experiment was finished.””

Daniel froze.

Experiment.

The same word from the files.

“What experiment?””

Sophia looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“She asked me questions.””

“What questions?””

Sophia whispered:

“Who I loved more.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The cruelty of it made him sick.

Someone had been forcing a child to prove her loyalty.

That afternoon, Detective Collins brought new information.

“We found something.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

“The identity records of Dr. Evelyn Hart.””

“You found her?””

“No.””

The detective placed a folder on the table.

“We found who she copied.””

Daniel opened it.

A photograph fell out.

A woman.

Not Vanessa.

Not Maria.

Someone else.

The name beneath it made Daniel stop.

*Evelyn Hartman.*

Maria looked at the picture.

“She looks familiar.””

Daniel frowned.

“From where?””

Maria touched the photograph.

“I don’t know.””

Detective Collins continued.

“She was a real person.””

“What happened to her?””

“She disappeared seven years ago.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two years before Sophia was born.””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Seven years.

The same timeline.

“What does she have to do with my family?””

The detective looked serious.

“She was hired by your father.””

Daniel went silent.

Again.

His father.

“Why?””

Collins opened another file.

“Your father funded a private research program.””

Daniel already knew.

“The Family Preservation Project.””

“Yes.””

Maria whispered:

“And Evelyn was part of it.””

The detective nodded.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

“She wasn’t the only researcher.””

Daniel looked up.

“Who else?””

Collins hesitated.

Then handed him a document.

A list of names.

At the bottom was a signature.

Daniel stared.

Because he recognized it.

Not from business.

Not from family.

From the security footage.

From the hidden room.

The person sitting across from Vanessa.

The person giving instructions.

The person behind everything.

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

Maria looked at him.

“What?””

He handed her the paper.

Her face changed.

Because the name belonged to someone they both knew.

Someone who had been inside the mansion.

Someone who had helped raise Sophia.

That evening, Daniel confronted the person.

The mansion dining room was empty.

Only two people sat at the table.

Daniel.

And the person he had trusted.

“You knew.””

The person looked calm.

“I knew you would eventually find out.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Why?””

A faint smile appeared.

“Because you were always curious.””

“You manipulated my family.””

“No.””

The person shook their head.

“I corrected your family.””

Daniel stood.

“You hurt my daughter.””

“I protected her.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Protected?””

“Yes.””

The person leaned forward.

“Your daughter was surrounded by weakness.””

“My daughter was three years old.””

“She needed to be tested.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.

“No child needs to be tested.””

The person looked disappointed.

“That is why you failed.””

Daniel stared.

“Failed what?””

The person smiled.

“The project.””

A silence followed.

Then Daniel understood.

This person wasn’t trying to destroy his family.

They were trying to rebuild it.

Into something they controlled.

“You used Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“You used Grant.””

“Yes.””

“You watched Sophia suffer.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“You admit it?””

The person calmly replied:

“Of course.””

“Why?””

The answer came softly.

“Because suffering reveals the truth.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What truth?””

The person looked directly at him.

“Whether you would choose your daughter…”

A pause.

“…or the woman who gave birth to her.””

Daniel froze.

Because the final piece suddenly made sense.

The entire plan.

The hunger.

The fear.

The recordings.

The questions.

Someone had been trying to force him into a choice.

But they had misunderstood one thing.

Daniel would never choose between them.

Then the person said something that made him stop.

“By the way…”

They smiled.

“You should check Maria’s old medical records.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

“Because Sophia’s birth certificate is not the only thing that was changed.””

And before Daniel could respond, the person placed a file on the table.

A file labeled:

*SOPHIA DANIELSON — ORIGINAL IDENTITY RECORDS*.
