Chapter 3: The Footage Nobody Was Supposed to See
Daniel stood in the middle of the hallway with the phone pressed against his ear.
For several seconds, he forgot how to breathe.
The words kept repeating in his mind.
Your wife, Maria.
Not Vanessa.
Not Grant.
Maria.
The person who had spent the last hour crying beside their daughter.
The person who had prepared the meals.
The person who had held Sophia and apologized for not protecting her.
His hand tightened around the phone.
“Play it.””
The technician was silent.
“Sir?””
“I said play the footage.””
“There’s something you should know first.””
Daniel stared at the dark hallway.
“What?””
“The file was not deleted completely.””
“Meaning?””
“Someone tried to remove it, but they didn’t remove the original. They copied it.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Copied it where?””
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
Upstairs, Sophia was sleeping.
Or trying to.
A three-year-old child should never have learned to sleep while afraid.
“Send me everything.””
“Sir, I recommend you don’t watch this alone.””
Daniel looked around the mansion.
The place he once considered his family’s sanctuary.
Now every room felt like it had a secret.
“I’ll decide that.””
The call ended.
A minute later, Daniel’s phone received a notification.
One video file.
One date.
One time.
The night Maria left for her mother’s house after an argument with Vanessa.
Daniel opened it.
The screen showed the kitchen.
Empty.
Dark.
Then Maria entered.
Daniel’s heart raced.
She was carrying Sophia’s pink bowl.
The same bowl.
The same one Sophia had been holding when he found her.
Maria walked toward the counter.
She placed the bowl down.
Then she looked around nervously.
Daniel leaned closer.
“What are you doing?””
The footage had no sound yet.
Maria opened a cabinet.
She pulled out something.
A small container.
Then she placed it beside the bowl.
Daniel frowned.
The video continued.
Maria looked toward the doorway.
Someone was coming.
A shadow appeared.
Vanessa.
Daniel watched as Vanessa walked into the kitchen.
The two women stood facing each other.
Arguing.
But the audio was still processing.
Daniel waited.
Then suddenly—
The footage jumped.
A missing section.
Someone had edited it.
Not deleted.
Edited.
The screen returned.
Maria was gone.
Vanessa remained.
And Sophia was standing alone.
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
The technician was right.
This wasn’t the full story.
His phone rang again.
“Sir, we restored the audio.””
“Send it.””
“It’s already uploaded.””
Daniel opened the file again.
This time, he heard everything.
Maria’s voice came first.
“Vanessa, I’m warning you.””
Daniel froze.
Warning?
Vanessa laughed.
“You don’t scare me.””
“You need to stay away from Sophia.””
“I live here.””
“You’re not her mother.””
The words were sharp.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then Vanessa’s voice changed.
“You think Daniel will believe you?””
Maria replied:
“He will believe the truth.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made Daniel sit up.
“Careful. You might lose more than you think.””
The footage continued.
Maria grabbed the container.
“What is this?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Maria opened it.
Daniel watched her expression change.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What did you put in her food?””
Daniel stopped.
His entire body went cold.
Vanessa laughed.
“I didn’t put anything in her food.””
“Then explain this.””
“I don’t have to explain myself to you.””
Maria’s voice shook.
“You’re sick.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You should be careful with accusations.””
The footage ended.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
His first thought was not anger.
It was confusion.
Because the footage created more questions than answers.
Maria had been in the kitchen.
She had confronted Vanessa.
She had discovered something.
But why had she never told him?
Why had she hidden this?
“Daniel?””
He turned.
Maria was standing behind him.
She had tears in her eyes.
“How much did you see?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
“How much were you planning to tell me?””
Maria looked down.
That was enough.
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“You knew.””
“I knew something was wrong.””
“What does that mean?””
Maria walked closer.
“I found the container.””
“What container?””
“The one Vanessa had hidden.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
Maria looked away.
Daniel’s silence became heavier.
“When she hurt Sophia?””
Maria flinched.
“No.””
“After she stopped eating?””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
His voice broke slightly.
“You don’t get to protect me from the truth when our daughter was suffering.””
Maria covered her face.
“I was scared.””
The answer surprised him.
“Of what?””
Maria looked at him.
“Of losing Sophia.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Maria took a shaky breath.
“Vanessa threatened me.””
“What did she threaten?””
“She said if I accused her, she would make sure Daniel thought I was unstable.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“She said that?””
Maria nodded.
“She told me nobody would believe a woman who was jealous of another woman living in the house.””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“Why would she say another woman?””
Maria hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Because Vanessa always wanted your attention.””
The silence that followed was uncomfortable.
Daniel had noticed Vanessa’s behavior before.
The way she tried to involve herself in family decisions.
The way she acted like she belonged.
But he had never imagined this.
Maria continued.
“I thought if I stayed calm, I could protect Sophia.””
“You stayed silent.””
“Yes.””
“You let her stay here.””
Maria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I could handle it.””
Daniel wanted to be angry.
He wanted to ask why.
But then he remembered Sophia’s small voice.
Daddy wouldn’t believe me.
Someone had created a house where everyone was afraid to speak.
The next morning, Daniel called everyone into the living room.
Vanessa arrived first.
She looked confident again.
Almost too confident.
Grant followed.
Maria sat beside Daniel.
Sophia sat on her father’s lap.
Daniel noticed Vanessa looking at the child.
Not with concern.
With irritation.
That told him everything.
“I want answers,” Daniel said.
Vanessa sighed.
“This again?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel, you’re letting emotions control you.””
“No.””
He placed a folder on the table.
“I’m letting evidence control me.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Grant looked nervous.
“What evidence?”” he asked.
Daniel opened the folder.
“Security footage.””
Vanessa became still.
Maria looked at him.
“You found more?””
Daniel nodded.
“The footage from the night Maria confronted Vanessa.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“That footage is private.””
Daniel looked at her.
“In my house?””
She sat back down.
The room felt tense.
Daniel pressed play.
The audio filled the room.
Vanessa’s own voice.
“You think Daniel will believe you?””
Her face became pale.
Grant looked at her.
“You said there was nothing.””
Vanessa glared at him.
“Be quiet.””
Daniel noticed.
That reaction.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
Anger.
She was angry because she had been exposed.
Not because she had been accused.
When the footage ended, Daniel looked at her.
“What was in the container?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I don’t know.””
“You told Maria you didn’t put anything in Sophia’s food.””
“I didn’t.””
“Then why were you hiding it?””
Silence.
Daniel leaned forward.
“What was it?””
Vanessa looked at Sophia.
Then smiled.
A cold, disturbing smile.
“You really want to know?””
Maria immediately moved closer to Sophia.
Daniel noticed.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa looked back at him.
“Ask your daughter.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“She knows.””
Everyone froze.
Sophia lowered her head.
Daniel looked down.
“Sophia?””
The little girl gripped his shirt.
“Sweetheart.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“Vanessa said I wasn’t allowed to tell.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Tell me what?””
Sophia started crying.
“I saw her…”
She stopped.
“What did you see?””
Sophia looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa immediately stood.
“That’s enough.””
Daniel’s voice thundered.
“Sit down.””
For the first time, Vanessa obeyed.
Sophia whispered:
“I saw Vanessa go into Mommy’s room.””
Maria froze.
“My room?””
Sophia nodded.
“She took something.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What did you take?””
No answer.
Sophia continued.
“She said Daddy would be angry if he knew.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Where was she going?””
Sophia’s small hand pointed toward the hallway.
“The locked room.””
Everyone became silent.
The east storage room.
The room Vanessa had claimed was private.
Daniel slowly stood.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at Grant.
Then at the hallway.
Whatever was behind that locked door had terrified them enough to attack him.
Enough to starve a child.
Enough to erase camera footage.
Daniel walked toward the east wing.
Vanessa’s voice suddenly broke through the room.
“Daniel, don’t open that door.””
He stopped.
Slowly turned.
“Why?””
For the first time, Vanessa looked completely afraid.
“Because you don’t know what you’re going to find.””
Daniel stared at her.
“That’s exactly why I’m opening it.””
He reached the door.
The lock was new.
Recently installed.
He inserted the key he had taken from the security office.
The door clicked.
Behind him, nobody spoke.
The door opened slowly.
A smell drifted out.
Old papers.
Dust.
And something else.
Something familiar.
Daniel stepped inside.
On the wall were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Pictures of Sophia.
Sleeping.
Playing.
Eating.
Crying.
But they weren’t family photographs.
They were surveillance images.
Daniel walked closer.
His blood ran cold.
Because someone had been watching his daughter.
For months.
Then he saw the newest photograph.
A picture taken only two days ago.
Sophia sitting alone on the kitchen floor.
Holding her empty bowl.
Underneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
Daniel picked it up.
May you like
And read the words that made his entire body go numb:
*“Phase two begins when Daniel returns.””*
