The Dinner Table Secret / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Father We Never Knew

Nobody slept.

Not because we were afraid.

Because fear requires uncertainty.

And we were past uncertainty.

Someone was watching us.

Someone had been watching us for years.

By sunrise, the house was filled with people who had spent a decade hiding pieces of the truth.

And for once, I was the person asking questions.

Emily sat across from me at the kitchen table.

She looked exactly like someone who had spent years wanting to come home.

And exactly like someone who knew she might have to leave again.

“Start from the beginning,” I said.

She nodded.

“My father was not the man everyone thought he was.””

“What was he?””

“A businessman.””

“That is not an answer.””

She looked down.

“He controlled companies through blackmail.””

Daniel added:

“He collected information about powerful people.””

I frowned.

“Information?””

“Secrets.””

David placed a folder on the table.

“Your father built an entire network around knowing things people wanted hidden.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Names.

Dates.

Photos.

And then I saw one name.

Marcus Reed.

My name.

My hands went cold.

“He was watching me?””

Emily nodded.

“Before we met.””

“Why?””

“Because you were his son.””

I closed the folder.

“I’m done hearing that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I know it is hard.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You don’t understand.””

I pointed at the papers.

“You all had years to prepare for this.””

I looked at Emily.

“You knew.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew.””

I looked at David.

“You knew.””

Then Sarah.

“You knew parts.””

Everyone lowered their eyes.

“I was the only person living my own life without knowing what story I was in.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

Later that afternoon, Emily and I sat alone outside.

For the first time in twelve years.

Just us.

No secrets.

At least I hoped.

“I hated you.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“I told myself I hated you.””

“I know.””

“But every night…”

My voice broke.

“I still looked at the door.””

Emily started crying.

“I wanted to come through that door.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because the first time I tried, someone attacked Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He was helping me leave.””

Daniel nodded from the porch.

“They found me.””

“And?””

“I survived.””

Emily continued.

“After that, I knew they would come after you and Michael.””

I looked toward the house.

“Sarah?””

“She agreed to help.””

“And then?””

Emily’s face changed.

“She got scared.””

I almost laughed.

“That explains a lot.””

Emily looked down.

“She was supposed to protect Michael’s memories.””

Instead, she lost them.

I did not say it.

But Emily saw it on my face.

“I know.””

The words were quiet.

“I know she failed him.””

I looked at her.

“And you?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“I failed him too.””

That answer hurt because it was honest.

That night, a knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

Daniel reached for something under his jacket.

I noticed.

“What is that?””

“A weapon.””

I stared.

“This is my house.””

“And that is why we have to protect it.””

The door opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Expensive suit.

Calm smile.

The kind of smile that made you nervous.

Emily went completely still.

“Dad.””

Nobody moved.

The man smiled.

“My daughter.””

Michael stepped behind me.

The man looked at him.

“And my grandson.””

I felt rage rise.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

He laughed.

“So many people have said that.””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

Then smiled.

“Your father.””

The word felt impossible.

A stranger standing in my doorway claiming to be the man who gave me life.

I shook my head.

“You abandoned me.””

His expression changed slightly.

“No.””

He looked at Emily.

“She lied to you.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

He ignored her.

“She told you I was a monster.””

“You are.””

He smiled.

“Maybe.””

Then he looked at me.

“But she never told you why she ran.””

The silence was heavy.

“What are you talking about?””

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a photograph.

And handed it to me.

It was old.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

Me.

And beside the bed…

Emily’s mother.

My father’s wife.

I looked up.

“That’s impossible.””

He smiled.

“You were never supposed to find out.””

“Find out what?””

He leaned closer.

“That Emily didn’t just marry you because she loved you.””

May you like

My stomach dropped.

“She married you because she was sent to watch you.””
