Chapter 3: Emily’s Last Letter

I did not sleep that night.

Not because of Sarah.

Not because of David.

Because of one sentence.

Protect Michael from you.

I replayed it over and over.

Every memory I had with Emily.

Every conversation.

Every goodbye.

I had been there when she died.

Hadn’t I?

I held her hand.

I heard her final words.

Or at least I thought I did.

At six in the morning, I drove to the address David sent.

A small brick house on the edge of town.

Michael came with me.

I tried to stop him.

He looked at me.

“Dad, this involves Mom.””

And I knew I could not leave him behind.

David opened the door before we knocked.

He was older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A face that looked like it had carried guilt for years.

“Marcus.””

“You know me.””

“I know everything about you.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is the box?””

David looked at Michael.

Then back at me.

“Inside.””

He moved aside.

The box sat on the table.

Untouched.

Michael rushed toward it.

Then stopped.

Like he was afraid it would disappear again.

“Open it,” I said softly.

His hands shook as he unlocked it.

Inside was everything.

The necklace.

The photos.

The bracelet.

And one envelope.

With Michael’s name written on it.

He stared.

“Dad…”

I nodded.

“Open it.””

He did.

But after reading the first line, his face changed.

“What?””

“What does it say?””

He handed me the letter.

I read Emily’s handwriting.

My hands went numb.

Michael,

If you are reading this, it means I was not able to give you these words myself.

I stopped.

David looked away.

“What is this?”” I asked.

He answered quietly.

“Emily wrote several letters before she died.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because she asked me not to tell you unless the time was right.””

I kept reading.

Your father loves you more than anything. But he has one weakness. He tries to carry every pain alone. Sometimes that means he forgets the people standing beside him.

I looked at Michael.

That hurt.

Because it was true.

The letter continued.

If you ever feel invisible, remember this: you were the greatest thing that ever happened to me.

Michael wiped his eyes.

I handed the letter back.

“Why did Sarah say you wanted the necklace?””

David looked surprised.

“Sarah said that?””

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“I never asked for the necklace.””

“Then why did you have the box?””

“Because I found out Sarah was trying to sell it.””

My hands curled into fists.

“How?””

“Emily’s jewelry had documentation. When someone tried to sell it, the buyer contacted me.””

I looked at the box.

“So you took it?””

“I protected it.””

“You stole it.””

David looked at me.

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“I saved it.””

The difference between those two words bothered me.

Because I did not know who to believe anymore.

“Why didn’t you contact me?””

David looked at Michael.

“Because Emily told me not to.””

“What?””

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out another envelope.

This one had my name on it.

Marcus.

I stared.

“You had this for twelve years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily believed you would need it one day.””

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

The first sentence broke me.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, something has happened that made David believe you needed to know the truth.

I sat down.

The room felt smaller.

I kept reading.

I need you to promise me something.

Do not let your fear of losing your family make you ignore what your eyes are showing you.

I stopped.

Because that was exactly what I had done.

I had ignored.

The late dinners.

Michael’s silence.

The way Sarah always interrupted when he spoke.

The way my son apologized for needing anything.

Emily knew me better than anyone.

David watched me carefully.

“What else did she write?””

I folded the letter.

“I don’t know yet.””

My phone rang.

Sarah.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Marcus, you need to come home.””

“Why?””

“Because Jordan found something.””

“What?””

A long pause.

Then:

“He found another letter from Emily.””

I stood.

“What letter?””

May you like

Sarah whispered:

“One that says Michael is not your biological son.””
