Chapter 6: The Woman Who Never Left

For twelve years, I had lived with a grave in my backyard.

A stone with Emily’s name carved into it.

Flowers that faded every season.

A place where I went when I missed her voice.

A place where I apologized for surviving.

And now my brother had called me and told me the impossible.

She never died.

I sat there with the phone still pressed against my ear long after the call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody knew how.

Finally, Michael whispered, “Dad…”

I looked at him.

His face was pale.

Not because of Emily.

Because he had watched his entire reality collapse in a single night.

First Sarah.

Then the box.

Then the DNA test.

Now his mother.

I hated that he had to carry any of this.

“Are you okay?”” I asked.

It was a stupid question.

No sixteen-year-old should have to answer it.

Michael looked down.

“I don’t know.””

That was the most honest thing anyone had said.

I sat beside him.

“I’m sorry.””

He looked confused.

“For what?””

“For not seeing what was happening.””

His eyes moved away.

“Dad…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I should have known.””

“You didn’t know about Mom.””

“No.””

I swallowed.

“But I should have known about you.””

That silence between us hurt.

The kind of silence where two people love each other but both are afraid to admit how much damage has already been done.

Then David spoke.

“We need to find Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“You know where he is?””

“No.””

“Then how do we find him?””

David stared at the photograph.

“Because Daniel is not the person who sent that message.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

He pointed at the phone.

“The person who sent the photo wanted you to know Emily was alive.””

“So?””

“So they wanted you to start looking.””

“And why would they do that?””

David’s expression darkened.

“Because they want something from you.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

For the first time that night, she looked genuinely afraid.

“I need to tell you something.””

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life someone had decided I could not handle.

But I stayed silent.

“Before Emily disappeared…”

Sarah looked at the floor.

“She contacted me.””

The room froze.

“What?””

Michael looked at her.

“You knew my mom?””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“Before I met you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“Because Emily wanted someone to watch over you.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“She chose you?””

Sarah nodded.

“She knew she was in danger.””

I looked at David.

He did not look surprised.

“You knew too.””

“Yes.””

My anger rose.

“You all knew.””

David lowered his eyes.

“Not everything.””

“But enough.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

Sarah wiped her face.

“She came to me three weeks before the accident.””

“Accident?””

Her expression changed.

She corrected herself.

“Before the night everyone thought she died.””

My heart raced.

“What did she say?””

Sarah looked toward Michael.

“She said if anything happened, I had to protect him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You failed.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Sarah flinched.

I regretted it.

But I did not take it back.

Because Michael had spent months eating alone upstairs.

A child Emily trusted Sarah to protect.

And Sarah had failed.

“She gave me instructions,” Sarah whispered.

“What instructions?””

Sarah walked to the cabinet.

From behind a stack of old books, she pulled out a small envelope.

My hands tightened.

“Another letter?””

She nodded.

“She told me never to open it unless you discovered the truth.””

I took it.

The envelope had Emily’s handwriting.

Marcus.

Not yet.

Those two words were written across the front.

My heart stopped.

Not yet.

I opened it.

Inside was one page.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, then the plan failed.

My hands shook.

The plan.

I continued.

I need you to understand something. I did not leave because I stopped loving you.

I left because loving you made you a target.

I stopped.

Michael leaned closer.

I kept reading.

There are people who believe I know something that belongs to them. They will hurt anyone connected to me to find it.

I looked at David.

“What did she know?””

David answered quietly.

“The truth about her father’s empire.””

I looked back at the letter.

Emily continued.

Marcus, the hardest thing I ever did was leave you and Michael behind. But I knew if I stayed, you would both die with me.

Tears blurred the page.

The handwriting became messier near the bottom.

I wanted to come back.

Every day.

Every single day.

But I needed to know you were safe.

Then the final line.

I never stopped being your wife.

I never stopped being Michael’s mother.

And I never stopped loving you.

I lowered the paper.

Michael was crying.

So was I.

But then I noticed something.

A small mark at the bottom of the page.

A symbol.

A circle with three lines through it.

David saw it.

And his face changed.

“What?””

He stood quickly.

“Where did she get this?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He did not answer.

“David.””

His voice dropped.

“It means she was found.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“What does that mean?””

David looked at the door.

“It means whoever was hunting her knows she contacted you.””

The lights suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

Then came a sound from outside.

A car door closing.

Michael grabbed my arm.

“Dad.””

I looked through the window.

A black SUV sat in front of the house.

The driver’s door opened.

A man stepped out.

And even from a distance…

I recognized him.

Daniel.

But he was not alone.

A second person stepped out of the passenger side.

A woman.

My breath disappeared.

Because even after twelve years…

May you like

I knew her.

Emily.
