Chapter 2: The Man Behind The Lie

Sarah did not answer.

That scared me more than any confession could have.

Because silence meant she was choosing what truth to reveal.

Not whether to tell the truth.

“Who is David?”” I repeated.

She placed the phone on the counter.

“No one.””

I almost smiled.

“No one?””

“Yes.””

“People named ‘no one’ usually don’t call and hear you say, ‘He cannot know about that.’”

Her face went pale.

Michael stood behind me.

Sarah noticed.

“Michael, go upstairs.””

“No,” I said.

She looked at me.

“This is between us.””

I shook my head.

“No. The moment my son was dragged into this, it stopped being between us.””

Sarah sat down.

Suddenly she looked exhausted.

Older.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She stared at the floor.

“I borrowed money.””

The answer surprised me.

Not because it explained everything.

Because it explained nothing.

“How much?””

She hesitated.

“Thirty thousand.””

I stared at her.

“For what?””

“Medical bills.””

“Whose?””

She looked away.

And that was when I knew.

“Jordan?””

She nodded.

My anger shifted.

Not disappeared.

Shifted.

Because I understood a mother wanting to protect her child.

But I also understood something else.

A mother protecting one child by destroying another child was still doing damage.

“You should have told me.””

“I was embarrassed.””

“You’re my wife.””

“You would have judged me.””

I looked at her.

“You thought I would judge you, so you let Michael believe he was unwanted?””

Her eyes filled.

“I never wanted that.””

“But it happened.””

She covered her face.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“How?””

She did not answer.

I walked toward the living room.

That was when I saw it.

A photograph on the shelf.

A picture of Sarah and Jordan from two months earlier.

Nothing strange.

Except behind the frame was a folded piece of paper.

I pulled it out.

Sarah stood immediately.

“Marcus, don’t.””

Too late.

I opened it.

It was a loan agreement.

David Carter.

Thirty thousand dollars.

Payment overdue.

And underneath the signature was something else.

A note.

Three words.

“Bring the box.””

I looked up slowly.

Sarah had stopped pretending.

“What does this mean?””

She was crying now.

“I needed money.””

“You sold Emily’s things?””

“No.””

“Then why does this say bring the box?””

She said nothing.

Michael stepped closer.

“Dad.””

I folded the paper.

“Sarah.””

She whispered:

“David knew about the necklace.””

The room became colder.

“What necklace?””

“The diamond necklace Emily left.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“That necklace is in the box.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“He said it would cover the debt.””

My anger came back.

“You were going to sell it?””

“No.””

“You were.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then where is the box?””

She looked terrified.

“I gave it to David temporarily.””

“Temporarily?””

“He said he only needed to look at the items.””

“Where is he?””

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You gave a stranger my dead wife’s belongings and you don’t know where he is?””

“He isn’t a stranger.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

Sarah looked up.

“David is Emily’s brother.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Emily had a brother.

A man I had never met.

A man who suddenly appeared after twelve years.

A man who had my wife’s final memories.

Michael whispered:

“Mom had a brother?””

I looked at Sarah.

“How long have you known?””

She did not answer.

That was enough.

I walked outside.

I needed air.

I needed space.

I needed to understand how my home had become a place where everyone knew something except me.

My phone rang ten minutes later.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice replied.

“Marcus Reed?””

“Yes.””

“My name is David Carter.””

I froze.

“You have something that belongs to me.””

I looked back at the house.

“What are you talking about?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Your wife left instructions before she died.””

My heartbeat changed.

“What instructions?””

His voice lowered.

“She told me that if anything happened to her…”

May you like

Another pause.

“…I was supposed to protect Michael from you.””
