Chapter 7: The Truth Behind The Grave
I did not move.
I could not.
My mind understood what my eyes were seeing.
But my heart refused.
Because hope is dangerous when you have already buried someone.
Emily stood outside my house.
Older.
Different.
But still Emily.
The same way she tilted her head.
The same way she held her hands when she was nervous.
The same person who had haunted every dream I had for twelve years.
Michael saw her.
And everything changed.
“Mom?””
The word came out so quietly I almost missed it.
Emily froze.
Her hand covered her mouth.
Then she ran.
Not toward me.
Toward him.
Michael stood completely still as she wrapped her arms around him.
For a second, he looked like he did not know what to do.
Then he broke.
He held onto her like he was afraid she would disappear again.
“I thought you were dead,” he cried.
Emily sobbed.
“I know.””
“Why did you leave?””
Her face broke.
“I’m sorry.””
“You let me think you were gone.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””
I watched them.
Mother and son.
A reunion that should have happened twelve years earlier.
A moment that should have belonged to them.
But all I could feel was the weight of every year I spent mourning someone who was alive.
Emily finally looked at me.
And the world stopped.
“Marcus.””
My name.
Just my name.
But hearing it from her voice almost destroyed me.
I wanted to run to her.
I wanted to hold her.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I stood there.
Because love and pain can exist at the same time.
“You’re alive.””
She nodded.
“I am.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was protected.””
I laughed softly.
“Protected?””
My voice cracked.
“You left me.””
“I know.””
“You left our son.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury you.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I know.””
I shook my head.
“No. You don’t.””
I pointed at Michael.
“Look at him.””
She did.
“He grew up without you.””
Her face broke.
“I know.””
“He stopped telling me when he was hurting.””
“I know.””
“He thought he had to protect me.””
Emily covered her mouth.
And that was when she realized.
She had protected him from danger.
But she had also protected him from a mother.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I looked away.
Because if I looked at her too long, I would forgive her too quickly.
And I was not ready.
Daniel stood behind her.
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“How long?””
“Since the beginning.””
My anger returned.
“You let me suffer.””
“I tried to tell you.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
I laughed.
“You disappeared.””
“Because I was being watched.””
“By who?””
Emily answered.
“By my father.””
The name nobody wanted to say.
Her father.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
“What happened that night?”” I asked.
Emily looked at David.
Then at Sarah.
Finally at me.
“The accident was staged.””
The room went silent.
“I was never in that car.””
My heart pounded.
“Then whose body was it?””
Emily looked down.
“Someone who wanted me gone.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Mom…”
She touched his face.
“I’m sorry you had to learn everything this way.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you helped her disappear.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Emily discovered what our father was doing.””
I stared.
“Our father?””
Daniel nodded.
My stomach turned.
“Your father?””
He looked at me.
“Our father.””
I felt the room shift.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Emily’s father wasn’t just her father.””
He looked at me.
“He was yours too.””
Nobody spoke.
I stared.
“No.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“My parents are dead.””
“Yes.””
“Emily’s father was not my father.””
Daniel looked away.
“I found out eight years ago.””
My voice became a whisper.
“And you never told me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone used that excuse.
Everyone.
Emily.
Sarah.
Daniel.
The entire world apparently knew what was best for me.
Except me.
Emily walked closer.
“Marcus, listen.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I spent twelve years grieving you.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.””
“I raised our son alone.””
“I know.””
“I thought I failed you.””
She reached for my hand.
I stepped away.
The hurt on her face was unbearable.
But I needed the truth.
All of it.
“Why come back now?””
Daniel and Emily exchanged a look.
That look scared me.
“What?””
Emily whispered:
“Because he found us.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the window.
“The man who wanted me dead.””
The lights flickered.
Then every phone in the room buzzed at the same time.
Everyone looked down.
One message.
From an unknown number.
A photo.
This time it was not Emily.
It was me.
Standing outside the cemetery.
Crying beside her grave.
May you like
Underneath the picture were six words.
I watched you mourn my daughter.
