Chapter 5: The Woman In The Photograph
I stared at the photo until my eyes hurt.
Emily.
My wife.
The woman I buried.
The woman whose voice I could still hear in the quiet parts of the house.
Standing.
Smiling.
Alive.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Michael whispered:
“Dad?””
I could not answer.
Sarah looked at the phone.
Her face drained of color.
“Marcus…”
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew.””
“I swear I didn’t.””
I turned to David.
“What is this?””
David looked at the picture.
And unlike everyone else…
he looked shocked.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He stared at me.
“Because Emily died.””
I held up the phone.
“Then explain this.””
David took it.
His hands trembled.
“I don’t know.””
That was the first honest answer anyone had given me all night.
I sat down.
My entire life felt like a story someone else had written.
A story where I was the last person allowed to read the ending.
“Who sent it?””
I checked the number.
Blocked.
No name.
No information.
Then another message came.
Stop looking for answers you were not meant to find.
I showed everyone.
Jordan stepped back.
“This is crazy.””
“No,” David said quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
He stared at the photo.
“This is not crazy.””
His voice changed.
“It is a warning.””
I looked at him.
“From who?””
He did not answer.
“David.””
He closed his eyes.
Then said:
“Emily’s father.””
I froze.
“Her father died before we met.””
David looked at me.
“No.””
The room became silent.
“He disappeared.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Emily spent years running from someone.””
I looked at Michael.
Then back.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she thought telling you would put you in danger.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it was true.””
I stood.
“No more secrets.””
Nobody moved.
“No more protecting me by lying to me.””
I looked at Sarah.
“No more protecting Michael by hurting him.””
I looked at David.
“No more waiting for the perfect time.””
Then I pointed at the photo.
“Tell me everything.””
David sat down slowly.
“When Emily was young, her father was involved in something dangerous.””
“What kind of something?””
“He controlled people.””
“How?””
David looked at Michael.
Then at me.
“Money. Information. Fear.””
I felt sick.
“And Emily?””
“She tried to escape.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Who is the man beside her?””
David hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“You know him.””
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
David looked at the picture again.
Then whispered:
“Your brother.””
My blood went cold.
I had one brother.
Daniel.
A man I had not spoken to in eight years.
A man who disappeared after a fight with me.
A man Emily always told me to forgive.
I took the phone.
The photo zoomed in.
The man standing beside Emily had his arm around her.
And on his wrist was a scar I remembered.
A scar from when we were kids.
“Daniel.””
The name left my mouth like a confession.
Michael looked at me.
“Dad?””
I barely heard him.
Because suddenly every unanswered question had a new suspect.
My brother.
The man who vanished.
The man who knew Emily before I did.
My phone rang.
This time, the number was not blocked.
It was saved.
Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
Nobody breathed.
Then I answered.
“Hello?””
For five seconds, there was only silence.
Then my brother spoke.
A voice I had not heard in eight years.
“Marcus.””
My grip tightened.
“Where is Emily?””
Another pause.
Then Daniel whispered:
“She’s been trying to get back to you for twelve years.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
His voice cracked.
May you like
“Because she never died.””
And then the line went dead.
