Chapter 9: The Woman Who Never Died
I stopped breathing.
For a moment, I convinced myself the security monitor was wrong.
A glitch.
A reflection.
A trick caused by exhaustion.
Because the alternative was impossible.
My mother was dead.
I had watched people mourn her.
I had stood beside her grave.
I had grown up with only memories and photographs.
Yet there she was.
Sitting inside Michael’s car.
Alive.
My hands gripped the edge of the table.
“No.””
The word barely left my mouth.
Serena looked at the monitor.
Then at me.
Her face became completely empty.
Like someone had taken every emotion away.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward her.
“You knew.””
It wasn’t a question.
Her silence answered.
My heart shattered all over again.
“How long?””
Serena looked down.
“I didn’t know she was alive.””
“Don’t.””
My voice was low.
“Not tonight.””
I pointed toward the screen.
“My dead mother is sitting outside my house with my brother, and you’re telling me you didn’t know?””
“I swear.””
She stepped closer.
“I swear I didn’t.””
Thomas stared at the screen.
His expression was different from everyone else’s.
Not shock.
Pain.
“She’s alive.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He shook his head slowly.
“No.””
But his eyes told another story.
He knew something.
Maybe not this.
But something.
The front gate opened.
Michael’s car moved forward.
Every person in that room watched the vehicle approach.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Then the car stopped.
The driver’s door opened.
Michael stepped out.
He looked toward the house.
Toward us.
And smiled.
A smile filled with confidence.
Like he had been waiting years for this moment.
Then the passenger door opened.
And she stepped out.
My mother.
Evelyn Brooks.
The woman whose face I had only seen in old photographs.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face older.
But there was no doubt.
It was her.
My knees nearly gave out.
A sound escaped me.
Something between a breath and a cry.
Because no matter how much anger I felt…
No matter how many secrets she had hidden…
A part of me was still the little boy who wanted his mother back.
The front door opened before I realized I had moved.
I stepped outside.
Cold air hit my face.
Michael stood near the driveway.
My mother stood beside him.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel.””
Hearing my name from her mouth broke something inside me.
I hated that.
I hated that after everything, after twenty years of believing she was gone, I still wanted to run to her.
Instead, I stood still.
“You’re alive.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question came out immediately.
Not why are you here.
Why did you leave?
Why did you let me believe you were gone?
Why did you let me grow up without you?
Her face crumpled.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
A painful sound.
“Everyone says that.””
My mother looked confused.
“What?””
I shook my head.
“Nothing.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Daniel, you need to listen.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to tell me what I need.””
His expression hardened.
“I’m trying to save you.””
“By destroying my family?””
He looked at Serena.
“She’s part of the reason you’re in danger.””
Serena stepped outside.
“No.””
Michael smiled.
“Still protecting her.””
My mother looked at Serena.
And something changed.
Recognition.
“You.””
Serena froze.
“You knew.””
My mother looked at her.
“You were the one Richard trusted.””
The words made everyone stop.
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I was done hearing that.
“Then tell me the right way.””
Silence.
I stepped closer.
“My whole life has been built on lies.””
My voice shook.
“I deserve the truth.””
My mother looked at me.
And finally nodded.
“You do.””
She took a deep breath.
“Richard wasn’t your biological father.””
I looked at Thomas.
“I know.””
Her eyes moved to him.
“You found him.””
“Yes.””
She looked devastated.
“I thought he was dead.””
Thomas stared at her.
“So did I.””
A strange silence passed between them.
Two people connected by my existence.
Two people who had disappeared from my life.
Both carrying secrets.
“Why did you leave?””
My mother looked at the ground.
“Because someone was trying to kill you.””
The words stopped me.
“What?””
She nodded.
“After Richard discovered the truth about the company, he realized the danger wasn’t just financial.””
“What truth?””
She looked at Michael.
Then Victor.
“Your father discovered that someone planned to take everything.””
Michael stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
My mother ignored him.
“Richard knew Michael was being manipulated.””
I looked at my brother.
“By Victor?””
She nodded.
“But Victor wasn’t the only person involved.””
The air changed.
Everyone looked at her.
“Who else?””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Me.””
Silence.
I felt like the ground disappeared.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She swallowed.
“I helped them.””
Michael looked surprised.
Even he hadn’t expected that.
My voice became quiet.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I thought I was saving you.””
The same words.
Again.
Always the same words.
“Explain.””
She wiped her face.
“When Richard discovered Thomas was your biological father, he also discovered something else.””
“What?””
“That Thomas had been framed.””
I looked at Thomas.
My mother continued.
“Someone wanted Richard to believe Thomas betrayed him.””
“Who?””
She looked at Michael.
My brother’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
My mother looked at him.
“You were young.””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“I know exactly what happened.””
My heart pounded.
“What happened?””
My mother looked at me.
“Your father found out Michael wasn’t stealing from him.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was being forced.””
Michael looked away.
The anger on his face disappeared.
Replaced by something else.
Shame.
“By who?””
My mother whispered:
“By our father.””
I froze.
“My grandfather?””
She nodded.
“Your grandfather controlled everything before Richard did.””
I stared.
“But he’s been dead for years.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
She looked at Michael.
“Because Michael inherited his secrets.””
The silence was unbearable.
Michael finally spoke.
“You don’t understand.””
I turned.
“No. I don’t.””
His eyes were red.
“You think I wanted this?””
“You hurt my children.””
His face changed.
Pain crossed his expression.
“I never touched them.””
“Then why were they afraid?””
He looked away.
Because he knew.
He had caused that fear.
Even without touching them.
“I was trying to force Serena to reveal the documents.””
My anger returned.
“You used my children.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I thought she would confess.””
“You threatened them.””
“I thought she would give up.””
I stepped forward.
“You’re sick.””
Michael looked at me.
“You think I’m the villain because you finally learned the truth.””
He pointed toward everyone.
“Look around, Daniel.””
His voice grew louder.
“Your wife lied. Your mother disappeared. Your biological father abandoned you. Victor betrayed your father.””
He looked at me.
“And somehow I’m the monster?””
I didn’t answer.
Because the worst part was…
I understood his pain.
But pain didn’t excuse cruelty.
Never.
Victor suddenly stepped outside.
Everyone turned.
He looked at my mother.
“You should have stayed gone.””
My mother’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Victor.””
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
Victor said nothing.
“You knew she was alive.””
His silence confirmed it.
My anger exploded.
“How many secrets have you kept from me?””
Victor looked at me.
“Enough to keep you alive.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Enough to control me.””
For the first time, Victor looked defeated.
Then Michael laughed.
A cold, bitter laugh.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“The truth isn’t about who betrayed Richard.””
He stepped closer.
“It’s about why Richard left everything to you.””
I looked at the folder.
The documents.
The inheritance.
The secrets.
Michael’s eyes narrowed.
“Your father didn’t choose you because he loved you.””
My chest tightened.
“He chose you because he knew something nobody else knew.””
“What?””
Michael smiled.
“Something your mother has been hiding for twenty years.””
I turned toward my mother.
She looked terrified.
“What is he talking about?””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence hurt more than any lie.
I stepped closer.
“Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“What did Richard know?””
She whispered:
“He knew you weren’t the only child connected to Thomas Reed.””
The world went silent.
I stared.
“What?””
My mother looked toward Michael.
Then back at me.
And the next words destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“Thomas had another child.””
I felt my heartbeat stop.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Michael slowly stepped forward.
His face was filled with pain.
May you like
And he said:
“Me.””
