Chapter 5: The Enemy My Father Trusted

The person standing in my doorway was the last person I expected to see.

Not because I didn’t know him.

Because I did.

Everyone knew him.

He had attended our family dinners.

He had stood beside my father at business events.

He had shaken my hand the morning after my father’s funeral and told me he would help me carry the weight my father left behind.

For years, I had considered him family.

But now, under the cold white lights of my foyer, he looked like a stranger.

“Victor Hale.””

The name left my mouth like a question.

Victor smiled.

A calm, polite smile.

The kind of smile people wear when they believe they are still in control.

“Daniel.””

His eyes moved past me.

Toward Serena.

Toward the children.

Then back to me.

“I see you finally found the folder.””

My body went rigid.

The folder.

The one hidden behind the painting.

The one my father had left behind.

The one only Serena knew existed.

I stepped forward.

“How do you know about that?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he slowly removed his coat and placed it over his arm.

Like he was visiting an old friend.

Like he hadn’t just walked into my home after my children had been hurt.

“I think we should talk.””

I laughed quietly.

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

“You come here in the middle of the night, you know about a secret my father hid, and you think we should talk?””

Victor looked at me.

“You’re emotional.””

That sentence.

That exact sentence.

I had heard it too many times tonight.

From Serena.

From Michael.

From people who wanted me to doubt my own instincts.

“I’m emotional because I came home and found my children terrified.””

Victor’s expression changed slightly.

Not sympathy.

Calculation.

“I heard.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You heard?””

He nodded.

“News travels quickly.””

“Who told you?””

Silence.

And again, that silence answered more than words could.

I looked toward Serena.

She looked just as confused as I was.

Victor noticed.

Interesting.

“You didn’t tell him everything?””

Serena’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

Victor smiled.

“Still protecting him?””

I stepped between them.

“Stop talking like you know my family.””

Victor looked at me.

“I knew your family before you did.””

The words hit hard.

Because they were true.

Victor had worked with my father for almost thirty years.

He had been there before I was old enough to understand business.

Before I knew the difference between trust and manipulation.

“Why are you here?””

Victor looked at the folder in my hand.

“Because your father made a mistake.””

My grip tightened.

“What mistake?””

“Trusting the wrong people.””

I stared at him.

“Like you?””

His smile faded.

For the first time, I saw something underneath his calm exterior.

Anger.

“You sound just like your father.””

“Good.””

“No.””

Victor stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what that means.””

The room became quiet.

Behind me, Ava and Noah held onto each other.

I could feel their fear.

And every instinct inside me screamed that I needed to get them away from this man.

“Daniel,” Serena whispered.

I glanced at her.

“Take the children upstairs.””

She nodded.

Victor watched.

“You think moving them upstairs keeps them safe?””

I turned sharply.

“What did you say?””

He looked at the children.

“I’m not the reason they were afraid.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Victor looked at Serena.

Then at me.

“Ask your wife why she never told you the truth about Michael.””

“I already know.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You know the version she wants you to know.””

Serena stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Victor ignored her.

“You found the pictures?””

I didn’t answer.

“You found the messages?””

My silence was enough.

He nodded.

“Good.””

“Good?””

“Yes.””

He looked almost relieved.

“Because now you can finally understand.””

I held up the folder.

“Understand what?””

“That your brother wasn’t the only person your father was afraid of.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Contracts.

Copies of emails.

Pages of notes written in my father’s handwriting.

I scanned the first page.

Then stopped.

Because one name appeared repeatedly.

Victor Hale.

My stomach dropped.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Victor didn’t move.

“Evidence.””

“Against you?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“Against your brother.””

I looked back down.

The documents showed money transfers.

Large amounts.

Companies I didn’t recognize.

Accounts connected to Michael.

But there was something else.

Something that made no sense.

Victor’s name appeared too.

Over and over.

“You expect me to believe you weren’t involved?””

“I expect you to read everything.””

I flipped through the pages.

My father had made notes.

Short sentences.

Warnings.

Questions.

One line was underlined three times.

*Michael is not acting alone.*

My heart started beating faster.

I looked at Serena.

“You knew about this?””

She nodded slowly.

“Some of it.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father asked me not to.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don’t care if you believe me.””

Her voice cracked.

“I care that your children are safe.””

That silenced me.

Because despite everything.

Despite the lies.

Despite the secrets.

That was the one thing we both wanted.

Our children safe.

Victor sighed.

“You two are still pretending this is about the past.””

He looked around the room.

“It isn’t.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means the person who started this is still moving.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Victor looked toward the window.

“Someone who knows this folder exists.””

I looked down.

The folder was in my hand.

“You.””

“No.””

Victor shook his head.

“If it were me, Daniel, you wouldn’t be standing here having this conversation.””

I hated that he sounded convincing.

Because that was the problem.

Everyone had a story.

Everyone had an explanation.

And somehow, every explanation made someone else look guilty.

“Where is Michael?””

Victor’s expression changed.

“You haven’t figured that out yet?””

“What?””

“He was never trying to hide from you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?””

“He wanted you to find him.””

A chill ran through me.

“Why?””

“Because he needed you angry.””

“Angry at who?””

Victor looked at Serena.

My chest tightened.

“No.””

Victor nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I turned toward Serena.

She looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

“Is he talking about you?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Victor spoke quietly.

“Your brother needed you to believe your wife was the enemy.””

“Why?””

“Because while you were focused on Serena…”

He paused.

“…he could finish what he started.””

My phone rang.

Everyone froze.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only breathing.

Then Michael’s voice.

“Daniel.””

I closed my eyes.

“You need to stop.””

A soft laugh.

“You found Victor.””

My grip tightened.

“How do you know?””

“Because I’m watching.””

The room went cold.

“Where are you?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It does.””

“No, Daniel.””

His voice became serious.

“What matters is that you’re finally seeing the truth.””

“You’re the one who threatened my family.””

A pause.

Then:

“Am I?””

I looked at Serena.

Michael continued.

“Ask Victor why your father changed his will three days before he died.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Ask him why your father removed someone from the company.””

Victor’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Michael saw it too.

“Daniel.””

His voice lowered.

“Ask him who your father was planning to expose.””

The call ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Everyone was watching me.

Especially Victor.

And that was when I noticed something.

He wasn’t surprised.

He wasn’t confused.

He looked angry.

Not because Michael had called.

Because Michael had revealed something.

I stepped closer.

“Victor.””

He didn’t respond.

“What did my father change in his will?””

Silence.

“Victor.””

His jaw tightened.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Your father didn’t remove someone from the company.””

My heart pounded.

“Then what did he do?””

Victor looked directly at me.

“He removed someone from the family.””

The room went silent.

And before I could ask who he meant, Victor pulled a folded document from inside his coat.

He placed it on the table.

A birth certificate.

My name was written at the top.

But underneath it was a name I had never seen before.

May you like

And the final line made my entire world collapse.

*Father: Unknown.*
