Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Watching Us

For a moment, nobody moved.

The words hung in the air like a warning.

“Uncle Michael is here.””

I looked toward the hallway.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“Noah,” I whispered.

“What do you mean?””

My son pointed toward the front entrance.

“He came in before you.””

The blood drained from my face.

Before me, Serena went completely still.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

Afraid.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because I had spent the last hour trying to understand which person in my house was the threat.

Now I realized I might have been looking in the wrong direction.

I moved quickly.

“Ava, Noah, go upstairs.””

“No,” Ava said immediately.

Her voice was small, but there was determination behind it.

“Daddy, please don’t leave us.””

I looked at my daughter.

The same little girl who had been pressed against the wall when I walked in.

The same little girl who had learned to stay quiet to survive.

I knelt down.

“I’m not leaving you.””

She grabbed my hand.

“Promise?””

I swallowed.

“I promise.””

I looked at Serena.

“Take them upstairs.””

She nodded.

For once, she didn’t argue.

She guided the children toward the staircase while I walked toward the foyer.

Every step felt heavier.

The mansion that once felt like a place of comfort now felt like a trap.

The expensive paintings.

The polished floors.

The huge windows overlooking the property.

Everything looked different.

Because suddenly, I wondered how many times someone had stood in this house while I wasn’t here.

How many secrets had been hidden behind these walls?

When I reached the foyer, I saw him.

Michael.

Standing near the front door.

My older brother looked exactly the same as he always did.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he belonged there.

Like he owned the place.

He held a glass of whiskey in his hand.

My whiskey.

From my cabinet.

I stopped several feet away.

“How long have you been here?””

Michael looked at me and smiled.

“Long enough.””

My hands tightened.

“You broke into my house?””

He took a slow drink.

“Your house?””

The way he said it made my stomach twist.

“What is that supposed to mean?””

Michael looked around the foyer.

“You really believe everything you have belongs to you.””

I stared at him.

“What did you do?””

He sighed.

“That’s always your problem, Daniel.””

“My problem?””

“You rush to judgment.””

I laughed quietly.

“Funny. You’re standing in my house after my wife and children were hurt, and you’re telling me I’m the problem?””

His expression changed slightly.

Not guilt.

Irritation.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He placed the glass on the table.

“You think this started tonight?””

I said nothing.

“It didn’t.””

He walked closer.

“This started years ago.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Stop talking in riddles.””

Michael smiled.

“You always hated when Dad said you were impatient.””

I froze.

My father.

Again.

Every road seemed to lead back to him.

“Leave my father out of this.””

“Why?””

Michael tilted his head.

“Because you’re afraid?””

“No.””

“Because deep down, you know I’m right.””

I stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk about him.””

Michael’s smile disappeared.

“You weren’t there.””

The words struck harder than I expected.

“What?””

“The night he died.””

My jaw tightened.

“Yes, I was.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You weren’t.””

The room went silent.

I remembered that night.

The rain.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The doctor’s expression.

The words that changed everything.

Your father didn’t make it.

I had spent years believing I understood what happened.

A car accident.

Bad weather.

A tragic mistake.

But Michael looked at me like he was carrying a secret that could destroy me.

“What are you saying?””

He walked toward the window.

“Dad was going to tell you something.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“About the company.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

Michael looked back.

“He discovered someone was stealing from him.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

That was deliberate.

“Michael.””

He smiled faintly.

“You always were his favorite.””

I felt anger rising.

“This is about jealousy?””

“No.””

His face hardened.

“This is about the fact that he trusted you with everything.””

“Because I earned it.””

His eyes flashed.

“And I didn’t?””

There it was.

The wound.

The one he had carried for decades.

I understood then.

This was never just about Serena.

Or the children.

Or the photographs.

This was about resentment.

About a brother who had spent his entire life believing he was second place.

“You’re sick.””

Michael laughed softly.

“Maybe.””

He walked closer.

“But I’m not wrong.””

“You threatened Serena.””

His expression shifted.

“Did she tell you that?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed her?””

I stared at him.

“Why wouldn’t I?””

“Because she lies.””

A voice came from behind me.

“No, Daniel.””

I turned.

Serena stood at the bottom of the stairs.

The children were behind her.

She looked at Michael.

“You’re the liar.””

Michael smiled.

“There she is.””

Serena’s face tightened.

“The truth is finally coming out.””

He looked amused.

“You really think he’ll believe you?””

“I don’t need him to believe me.””

She stepped forward.

“I need him to see.””

Michael’s smile faded.

For the first time, I saw something between them.

Not affection.

Not friendship.

Fear.

They were both afraid of each other.

“What happened between you two?””

Neither answered.

I looked at Serena.

“Tell me.””

She hesitated.

Then she took a deep breath.

“Michael came to me because he wanted access to your company records.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“He said he wanted information.””

Michael interrupted.

“She’s twisting it.””

Serena ignored him.

“He knew I had access to your home office.””

I looked at the photographs.

“The documents.””

She nodded.

“He wanted me to help him find something.””

“What?””

Her voice dropped.

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

Michael suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He grabbed the edge of the table and knocked the photographs onto the floor.

The sudden movement made Noah scream.

I stepped between them instantly.

“Don’t move.””

Michael froze.

The look in his eyes changed.

For a second, he wasn’t my brother.

He was someone I didn’t recognize.

“You really think you’re protecting them?””

I stared at him.

“Yes.””

He laughed.

“You have no idea what’s coming.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

One photo.

My breath stopped.

It was an image of my house.

Taken from outside.

Through the living room window.

The timestamp was from ten minutes earlier.

Someone had been watching us.

I looked at Michael.

“You sent this?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I stepped closer.

“You’ve been spying on my family?””

Michael’s face became cold.

“I’ve been trying to stop something.””

“What?””

He looked toward Serena.

Then toward the children.

“Her.””

Serena shook her head.

“No.””

Michael pointed at her.

“She knows what happened.””

“What happened?””

He looked directly at me.

“The night your father died.””

I felt my anger disappear.

Replaced by fear.

“Stop using that.””

“It’s the truth.””

“You’re lying.””

“Then ask her.””

Every eye turned toward Serena.

She looked frozen.

“Serena?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence destroyed me.

Because I had spent the entire night discovering impossible things.

My brother.

The photographs.

The threats.

The lies.

But this was different.

This was the secret both of them were afraid to say.

“Tell me.””

Serena looked down.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“I need you to tell me.””

She closed her eyes.

And when she finally spoke, her words barely reached me.

“I was there.””

The room stopped.

“What?””

“The night your father died.””

I stared.

“You told me you never met my father.””

“I know.””

“Why would you lie?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because he made me promise.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

She looked at Michael.

Then back at me.

“Your father.””

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“My father asked you to hide something?””

She nodded.

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“He told me if anything happened to him…”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“…I had to protect you from your own family.””

Slowly, Michael’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Panic.

And that was the moment I knew.

Whatever secret my father left behind…

Michael had been trying to bury it.

But before Serena could tell me the rest, the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Ava screamed upstairs.

Then came the sound of glass breaking.

Someone was inside.

And when the emergency lights flickered back on, Michael was gone.

But on the floor where he had been standing was a single envelope.

May you like

My name was written across the front.

In my father’s handwriting.
