Chapter 8: The Father Who Came Back From the Dead

For twenty years, I had believed I knew the story of my life.

A father who died.

A mother who left behind unanswered questions.

A brother who carried bitterness.

A childhood built on love, even if it had been complicated.

But in a single night, every truth I had trusted collapsed.

And now the impossible was standing outside my front gate.

Thomas Reed.

The man whose blood ran through my veins.

The man my mother had written about.

The man everyone believed was dead.

I stared at the security monitor.

He stood beneath the harsh white light near the gate.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably alive.

My knees almost gave out.

“No.””

The word came from Serena.

Not from me.

She looked like she had seen a ghost.

Because she had.

“How?”” she whispered.

Victor stared at the screen.

His face had lost all color.

“This can’t be happening.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew he was alive?””

Victor immediately shook his head.

“No.””

But his reaction wasn’t surprise.

It was fear.

And that bothered me.

Before I could question him, the doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Slowly.

Like whoever stood outside knew exactly what they were doing.

They weren’t asking to come in.

They were announcing themselves.

I looked at the children.

Ava and Noah were standing on the stairs.

Watching.

Terrified.

I walked toward them.

“Go to your rooms.””

Ava shook her head.

“Daddy…”

“Please.””

My voice softened.

“I need you to trust me.””

She looked at me for a moment.

Then nodded.

She took Noah’s hand.

They disappeared upstairs.

Only then did I turn back toward the door.

Victor stepped forward.

“Don’t open it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what he wants.””

I almost laughed.

“Apparently nobody in this house tells me anything until it’s too late.””

That silence hurt.

Because nobody could argue.

I opened the door.

Thomas Reed stood there.

Up close, the resemblance was strange.

Not obvious.

Not like looking into a mirror.

But there were things.

The shape of his eyes.

The way he tilted his head when studying someone.

The same expression I had seen in my own reflection when I was trying to solve a problem.

For the first time in my life, I saw where some parts of me came from.

And I hated that I felt something.

Curiosity.

Connection.

Even after everything.

“Daniel.””

Hearing him say my name felt wrong.

Like a stranger using a word that belonged to someone else.

“You know who I am.””

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“I know enough.””

Thomas looked past me.

At Serena.

At Victor.

His expression hardened.

“I see the whole group is here.””

Victor stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t be alive.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Neither should Richard.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father was murdered.””

I already knew that.

But hearing him say it made it real again.

“Who killed him?””

Thomas looked directly at Victor.

And suddenly, I understood why Victor had looked afraid.

“No.””

Victor’s voice was quiet.

“Don’t do this.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“You spent twenty years hiding behind Richard’s name.””

My eyes moved between them.

“What is happening?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father discovered the truth.””

“About what?””

“About me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Thomas stepped inside.

“He discovered that I was your biological father.””

I swallowed.

“I know.””

Thomas looked surprised.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

He glanced at Serena.

Then Victor.

“Then they finally told you.””

I felt anger rise.

“They told me pieces.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“That sounds like them.””

I ignored the insult.

“Why did you disappear?””

The question had been waiting my entire life.

Why wasn’t he there?

Why did I grow up with only stories?

Why did he become a ghost?

Thomas looked down.

“Because I was told you were safer without me.””

“By who?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

His eyes moved to Victor.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Victor shook his head.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

I turned.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew Thomas was alive.””

“No.””

Thomas laughed.

“You’re still lying.””

Victor’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“I know exactly what happened.””

The tension between them was unbearable.

I looked at Thomas.

“Tell me.””

He took a deep breath.

“Your father discovered Michael had been stealing from the company.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“But he also discovered something worse.””

“What?””

Thomas looked at Serena.

She lowered her eyes.

Then he said:

“Michael wasn’t working alone.””

The words echoed.

Again.

Everyone had said that.

But nobody had named the other person.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at Victor.

My heart sank.

“No.””

Victor immediately shook his head.

“This is exactly what he wants.””

Thomas ignored him.

“Your father trusted Victor more than anyone.””

Victor’s expression tightened.

“And that trust was used against him.””

I looked at Victor.

The man who had walked into my home claiming to protect my family.

The man who knew my father’s secrets.

The man who had access to everything.

“You betrayed him?””

Victor’s silence was enough.

“Answer me!””

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

My voice rose.

“My father died.””

“I never wanted Richard dead.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“But you wanted what he had.””

Victor looked at him.

“And you wanted his family.””

The accusation hung in the air.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Neither answered.

Then Thomas spoke.

“Your father didn’t die because of the company.””

He looked at me.

“He died because he found out Victor planned to use Michael.””

I frowned.

“Use him for what?””

Thomas hesitated.

And that hesitation scared me.

“For revenge.””

“Against who?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Against Richard.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

“Because Victor believed Richard ruined his life.””

I looked at Victor.

“Is that true?””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what your father did.””

“Then tell me.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“You think Richard was a hero?””

“Yes.””

His expression became bitter.

“That’s because you never knew the whole story.””

I stepped closer.

“What did he do?””

Victor looked away.

For the first time, I saw pain instead of anger.

“He destroyed my family.””

Silence.

“What?””

“My father lost everything because of Richard.””

Thomas interrupted.

“Your father made mistakes. He didn’t deserve to die.””

Victor looked at him.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

The room became still.

I realized something terrifying.

This wasn’t just a murder mystery.

It was a cycle.

Years of anger.

Years of secrets.

Years of people hurting each other because they believed they were justified.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

I looked down.

A message.

From Michael.

*You finally met him.*

My heart sank.

Another message appeared.

*Now ask him why he left you.*

Then another.

*Ask him why he chose money over his own son.*

I looked at Thomas.

His face changed.

He knew exactly what Michael was doing.

“What did Michael mean?””

Thomas looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“I am done being the last person to know the truth.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I didn’t leave because I wanted to.””

“Then why?””

His voice broke slightly.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“Because she discovered something about you.””

My stomach tightened.

“About me?””

He nodded.

“Something Richard knew too.””

“What?””

Thomas looked at me.

And the answer came out slowly.

“Daniel…”

A pause.

“You were never supposed to inherit the company.””

I stared.

“What?””

Thomas continued.

“Richard changed the will because he discovered the truth about your birth.””

My heart pounded.

“What truth?””

Thomas looked toward the folder.

“The company wasn’t meant for you.””

“Then why did he leave it to me?””

Thomas’s expression turned grave.

“Because he knew someone would try to kill you if they found out.””

The room went silent.

“Found out what?””

Thomas looked at Victor.

Then at me.

“Daniel…”

His voice lowered.

“You are not just Richard Brooks’ adopted son.””

I waited.

My entire body went cold.

“You are the rightful owner of something much bigger than the company.””

I stared.

“What?””

Thomas took a step closer.

“The night Richard died, he wasn’t protecting the business.””

He looked directly into my eyes.

“He was protecting you.””

Before I could ask what that meant, the lights suddenly flickered.

The security alarm screamed again.

Victor looked toward the window.

His face changed.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked toward the monitor.

The driveway camera showed something that made my blood freeze.

A black car was parked outside the gate.

Inside the car was Michael.

But he wasn’t looking at the house.

He was looking at someone beside him.

Someone sitting in the passenger seat.

Someone who had been missing for years.

Someone whose face appeared on the screen for only a second.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized her.

My mother.

Impossible.

Dead for twenty years.

But there she was.

May you like

Alive.

And Michael was opening the gate for her.
