Chapter 7: My Mother’s Final Confession
I held the envelope in my hand and felt like I was holding a piece of a life I never knew existed.
My mother had been gone for twenty years.
Twenty years.
And yet somehow, in the middle of the worst night of my life, she had found a way to speak to me.
The room felt smaller.
Everyone was watching.
Victor.
Serena.
My children.
All of them waiting to see what truth would come out next.
I looked down at the envelope again.
My name was written across the front.
Not Daniel Brooks.
Just:
*Daniel.*
Like whoever wrote it knew exactly who I was.
Not my family name.
Not my inheritance.
Just me.
“Where did you find this?”” I asked Ava.
She looked nervous.
“Under my bed.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Noah stepped closer.
“Daddy, it was inside the floor.””
I frowned.
“The floor?””
He nodded.
“Under the loose piece of wood.””
I looked toward the staircase.
A hidden compartment.
Another secret.
Another thing in my house that I never knew existed.
How many hidden places had there been?
How many truths had been buried beneath the life I thought I understood?
I looked at Serena.
“Did you know about this?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Victor watched carefully.
“I didn’t know either.””
For some reason, that made me more nervous.
Because if even Victor didn’t know, then this wasn’t part of his plan.
Someone else had been preparing for this moment.
I walked toward the kitchen table and sat down.
My hands hovered over the envelope.
I wasn’t afraid of what was inside.
I was afraid of what it would confirm.
For years, I had lived with simple truths.
Richard Brooks was my father.
My family was mine.
My past was something I understood.
Now every one of those things had cracks running through them.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded letter.
The paper was old.
The edges were worn.
I unfolded it.
And immediately recognized the handwriting.
My mother’s.
My heart tightened.
My dearest Daniel,
I stopped reading.
Nobody had called me that since I was a child.
I continued.
If you are reading this, then you have finally discovered the truth your father and I spent years trying to protect you from.
I looked up.
Your father.
Not Richard.
My mother had written that before explaining anything.
That alone made my hands shake.
First, I need you to understand something. Richard Brooks was your father in every way that mattered.
I swallowed.
He held you when you cried. He taught you how to walk. He stayed awake beside you when you were sick. He chose you.
A tear escaped before I could stop it.
Because those memories were real.
The man who raised me was my father.
No document could erase that.
But then came the next part.
The man who gave you life was Thomas Reed.
I closed my eyes.
The name again.
A stranger’s name attached to my existence.
Thomas was not a bad man. He was not someone I hated. But he made choices that hurt people, and those choices eventually put our family in danger.
I looked at Victor.
Then Serena.
Both were silent.
Richard knew the truth before I did. He discovered Thomas had been involved with people who wanted access to the company. When Richard confronted him, Thomas became afraid.
My heartbeat increased.
He told Richard that someone else was behind everything.
I kept reading.
Someone inside our family.
The room went cold.
I looked at Victor.
Then at Serena.
Then I thought of Michael.
Richard spent months searching for the truth. He believed Michael knew more than he admitted.
There it was.
My brother’s name.
My mother had known.
But Michael was not the only person Richard suspected.
I stopped.
The next sentence was underlined.
Daniel, there is something you must know about your birth.
I held my breath.
Thomas Reed was your biological father, but he was not the man who betrayed Richard.
I frowned.
What?
I read the sentence again.
Then the next one.
The person who betrayed Richard was someone who had access to his home, his company, and his trust.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone who had been there.
I looked at Serena.
She looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
I continued.
I wanted to tell you everything. I wanted to explain why Richard chose you. Why he protected you. Why he changed his will.
My eyes moved faster.
But before I could, Richard died.
A painful silence filled the room.
Daniel, if anyone tells you Richard was weak because he loved you, do not believe them.
I stopped.
Because I knew who she meant.
Michael.
Richard did not choose you because you were his son by blood.
The next words blurred.
He chose you because you were the only person who loved him without wanting something from him.
I looked away.
My father.
The man who raised me.
Even now, he was trying to protect me.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And everything changed.
There is one more truth you need to know.
My breathing slowed.
The night Richard died, he did not go to meet Thomas Reed.
I froze.
He went to meet Michael.
My eyes widened.
“What?””
The word escaped my mouth.
Everyone looked at me.
I read the sentence again.
The night my father died…
He met my brother.
Not Thomas.
Michael.
My hands shook.
“What does it say?”” Serena asked.
I looked up.
“My father met Michael before he died.””
Victor’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael told everyone he was out of town.””
I stared.
“He lied.””
Silence.
Then Serena whispered:
“Of course he did.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked devastated.
“I remember.””
“What?””
“The night Richard died…”
She closed her eyes.
“Michael came home late.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Richard’s death destroyed everyone.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“It isn’t.””
She wiped her face.
“I was afraid.””
“Of Michael?””
She nodded.
“For years.””
Victor looked angry.
“You should have told him.””
Serena turned toward him.
“You weren’t exactly honest either.””
The tension between them exploded.
“You both knew.””
My voice stopped them.
“You both knew pieces of the truth.””
Neither spoke.
“And you let me live a lie.””
Serena stepped closer.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Victor said nothing.
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I held up the letter.
“My whole life, people have been protecting me from the truth.””
I looked at the stairs.
At my children.
“Look where that got us.””
Nobody had an answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
Secrets didn’t protect families.
They poisoned them slowly.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message.
From Michael.
I opened it.
There was a picture.
My breath stopped.
It showed him standing beside my father.
The night Richard died.
But that wasn’t the shocking part.
The shocking part was the location.
The photo was taken outside a building.
A hospital.
And in the background was a police car.
I looked closer.
Michael had written one sentence beneath it.
*Ask Serena why she was the last person to see your father alive.*
My eyes moved to Serena.
Her face went pale.
“No.””
The word barely escaped.
I stood.
“Is it true?””
She didn’t answer.
“Serena.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“You saw my father that night?””
She nodded.
“After Michael left.””
The room went silent.
“What happened?””
She looked at me.
And the pain on her face was real.
“I went to tell him the truth.””
“What truth?””
Her voice shook.
“That Thomas Reed wasn’t your only secret.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at the letter.
Then at me.
“Daniel…”
A tear fell down her cheek.
“Your father knew who your real biological father was.””
I felt numb.
“What?””
“He knew.””
“How?””
“Because Thomas told him.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Why?””
Serena whispered:
“Because Thomas wasn’t trying to hide from Richard.””
She paused.
“He was trying to warn him.””
The room became completely silent.
“Warn him about what?””
Serena looked toward the window.
At the darkness outside.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“About the person who ordered your father’s death.””
I stepped forward.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time all night…
she looked more afraid of saying the name than she was of anything else.
“Daniel…”
Her voice broke.
“The person who wanted your father gone…”
A sudden crash came from outside.
Everyone turned.
The security alarm started screaming.
Then the front gate camera flashed on the television screen.
A figure stood outside the property.
Holding something in his hand.
Michael.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him stood another person.
Someone I had never expected to see.
Someone who should have been dead.
Serena covered her mouth.
Victor stepped back.
And my entire world stopped.
Because the person standing beside my brother…
May you like
was Thomas Reed.
My biological father.
