Chapter 6: The Son My Father Never Claimed

I stared at the birth certificate.

At first, I thought I was misunderstanding what I was seeing.

Because the human mind has a strange way of protecting itself.

When something is too painful, too impossible, too destructive, it creates distance.

It tells you there must be another explanation.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

A cruel joke.

Anything except the truth.

But the paper in front of me didn’t disappear.

The words didn’t change.

*Father: Unknown.*

I looked up at Victor.

“What is this?””

My voice sounded empty.

Victor didn’t answer immediately.

That bothered me.

Because I had spent my entire life knowing exactly who my father was.

Richard Brooks.

A successful businessman.

A respected man.

A father who taught me how to tie my shoes, how to shake someone’s hand, how to keep a promise even when it cost me something.

My entire identity was built around being his son.

And now Victor was standing in my house, telling me maybe I wasn’t.

“Daniel,” Serena whispered.

I didn’t look at her.

I couldn’t.

Because I was afraid of what I would see.

Pity.

Guilt.

Confirmation.

“Answer me.””

Victor looked at the document.

“Your father knew.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“Richard knew you weren’t biologically his son.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

“He knew before he died.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out stronger.

Louder.

“You’re lying.””

Victor didn’t react.

“I expected you to say that.””

“Because it’s impossible.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Because it’s painful.””

I grabbed the document.

My hands were shaking.

“You’re telling me my father raised me knowing this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because he loved you.””

That answer should have comforted me.

Instead, it made me angry.

“If he loved me, why didn’t he tell me?””

Victor was quiet.

And that silence hurt.

Because it meant there was a reason.

A reason nobody wanted to say.

I looked at Serena.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed me more than Victor’s revelation.

I stepped away.

“How long?””

“Since before we got married.””

I stared at her.

The woman who had slept beside me every night.

The woman who had looked into my eyes and promised there would be no secrets between us.

“You knew who I was before I did.””

She shook her head.

“No. I knew what your father told me.””

“What did he tell you?””

She swallowed.

“He told me you were his son in every way that mattered.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is.””

“No, Serena.””

My voice cracked.

“It’s not.””

The children were watching.

I saw Ava’s face.

Confused.

Scared.

I immediately regretted letting them hear this.

I turned toward them.

“Go upstairs.””

Ava hesitated.

“Daddy…”

“Please.””

She nodded slowly.

She took Noah’s hand.

Together, they walked upstairs.

Only when they disappeared did I let myself breathe.

I turned back.

“Start talking.””

Victor crossed his arms.

“Your biological father was named Thomas Reed.””

The name meant nothing.

Nothing.

And somehow that made it worse.

“Who was he?””

“A man who worked for your father.””

I stared.

“My father’s employee?””

“Yes.””

“Did Richard know him?””

Victor looked at me.

“He knew him very well.””

I felt sick.

The pieces weren’t fitting.

“What happened?””

Serena answered quietly.

“Your mother had an affair.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The sentence I never wanted to hear.

My mother.

A woman I barely remembered.

She died when I was young.

All I had left of her were photographs and stories.

“She cheated on him?””

Serena nodded.

“And he stayed.””

“Why?””

“Because of you.””

I looked at Victor.

“You expect me to believe my father raised another man’s child out of kindness?””

Victor’s expression softened.

“I expect you to believe he raised you because he was the only father you ever needed.””

I hated that part of me wanted to believe him.

Because it sounded exactly like my father.

Richard Brooks was many things.

Strict.

Demanding.

Difficult.

But he was never cruel.

Never.

I looked at the birth certificate again.

“Why now?””

That was the question that mattered.

“Why bring this up tonight?””

Victor glanced toward the folder.

“Because Michael found out.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“He discovered the truth.””

“And?””

“And he used it.””

I clenched my fists.

“How?””

Victor looked at Serena.

“She knows.””

I turned.

Serena closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Michael found documents from your father’s private files.””

“What documents?””

“Letters.””

“About me?””

She nodded.

“He learned Richard wasn’t your biological father.””

“And then?””

“He believed he finally had something that could destroy you.””

I frowned.

“Destroy me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Serena looked at me sadly.

“Because Michael spent his entire life believing you stole everything from him.””

The words hit hard.

My brother.

The man I grew up with.

The man who stood beside me at my wedding.

The man I defended countless times.

He didn’t see me as his brother.

He saw me as a thief.

Even though I had never taken anything.

“You said my father changed his will.””

Victor nodded.

“He did.””

“What did he change?””

Victor looked at the folder.

“Everything.””

He walked toward the table and opened the documents.

“Three days before he died, Richard changed ownership of the company.””

I looked down.

The papers showed legal transfers.

A new structure.

A new trust.

And then I saw my name.

Not Michael’s.

Mine.

“He left it to me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because he knew Michael was dangerous.””

The anger returned.

“You knew all this and said nothing?””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“After your father died.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Michael threatened me.””

I laughed.

“Everyone has a threat.””

Victor didn’t react.

“Because everyone who knew the truth became a target.””

A silence followed.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, there was a video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my living room.

My house.

Earlier that night.

The moment I came through the door.

Someone had recorded everything.

The argument.

The children crying.

Serena holding the hanger.

My blood turned cold.

But then the video continued.

It showed something I hadn’t seen.

Before I arrived.

Serena wasn’t holding the hanger at first.

She was standing near Noah.

Crying.

Begging him to tell her something.

Then Michael appeared in the doorway.

My entire body froze.

The video showed him grabbing Serena’s arm.

Whispering something.

Then leaving.

A few seconds later, Serena picked up the hanger.

But she wasn’t looking at the children.

She was looking at the door.

Waiting.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Serena.

She was crying.

“I was trying to scare him away.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He threatened Noah.””

My face changed.

“What did he threaten?””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“Serena.””

“He said if I didn’t make you believe I was the monster…”

Her voice broke.

“…he would hurt the children.””

The room went silent.

I felt something inside me break.

Because suddenly, the night I thought I understood was changing.

The woman I thought attacked my children…

might have been trapped.

But that didn’t erase what happened.

It didn’t erase the fear in their eyes.

It didn’t erase the bruises.

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because Michael told me he had proof that would make you hate me forever.””

“What proof?””

She looked toward the stairs.

Then back at me.

“The night your father died.””

I froze.

Again.

Always that night.

“What about it?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“He wasn’t killed because of business.””

The room became still.

“He was killed because he discovered who your real father was.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Victor stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

Serena looked at him.

“Yes, it is.””

Their eyes locked.

And suddenly I understood.

They weren’t just hiding secrets from me.

They were hiding different versions of the same secret.

I looked at Victor.

Then Serena.

“Which one of you is lying?””

Neither answered.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Ava stood there.

Her face was pale.

“Daddy…”

I rushed toward her.

“What happened?””

She held something in her hand.

A small old envelope.

“I found this under my bed.””

I took it.

My name was written on the front.

Not in my father’s handwriting this time.

In my mother’s.

And underneath my name were five words.

*Open only after you know.*

My hands went cold.

Because my mother had been dead for twenty years.

May you like

And somehow…

she had left me one final secret.
