The Daughter They Never Saw / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside the Family

The words on the paper burned into Samantha’s mind.

*Never trust a Bennett.*

For a moment, she couldn’t look at Adrian.

She couldn’t look at anyone.

The room that had once felt like a home now felt like a battlefield.

Every person around her carried a secret.

Every person had known something she didn’t.

And once again…

she was the last person to find out.

Samantha slowly looked at Adrian.

The man who had been the first person to see her.

The first person to defend her.

The first person to make her feel like she mattered.

But now there was a name between them.

Bennett.

Adrian noticed the change in her expression.

“Samantha…”

She stepped back.

“Your father knew mine.””

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“Yes.””

“And my father wrote this.””

She pointed at the note.

“Never trust a Bennett.””

Adrian’s face tightened.

“I don’t know why he wrote that.””

“But it was about your family.””

“I know.””

His voice was quiet.

“But my father died before I knew any of this.””

Samantha looked away.

“That doesn’t change what happened.””

“No.””

Adrian accepted that.

“But it also doesn’t mean I’m the person who hurt you.””

The sentence should have comforted her.

But Samantha was too exhausted.

Too many truths had fallen on her in too little time.

She looked at Daniel.

“Is there proof?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father never accused anyone without evidence.””

“Then where is it?””

Daniel glanced at the envelope.

“That is what we need to find out.””

Victoria suddenly spoke.

“You shouldn’t.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was filled with panic.

Samantha stared at her.

“Why?””

Victoria looked at the letter.

“Because some things are better left buried.””

Samantha felt something inside her break.

“Buried?””

Her voice rose.

“My parents were murdered. My identity was stolen. I spent twenty years believing I was unwanted.””

She stepped closer.

“And you’re telling me to leave it buried?””

Victoria looked away.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Samantha laughed sadly.

“You kept me alive.””

She shook her head.

“But you never let me live.””

The words hit Victoria harder than any accusation.

Even Olivia and Charlotte looked away.

Because they knew.

They had seen it.

They had watched Samantha disappear inside that house.

And they had done nothing.

Charlotte slowly stood.

“Mom…”

Victoria looked at her.

Charlotte’s eyes were filled with confusion.

“Is that why you always treated her differently?””

Nobody answered.

Charlotte looked at Samantha.

“All these years…”

Her voice became smaller.

“I thought you were just not like us.””

Samantha looked at her.

“I wasn’t.””

A pause.

“Because I was never allowed to be.””

Charlotte lowered her eyes.

For once, she had no cruel comment.

No arrogant smile.

Only guilt.

Then Olivia suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the photograph.

“That man…”

She looked at Adrian.

“Is your father’s friend?””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

Olivia’s face changed.

“I know him.””

The room became silent.

Samantha turned.

“What?””

Olivia looked nervous.

“He came to this house before.””

Victoria immediately said:

“Olivia.””

But it was too late.

Samantha heard the warning in her mother’s voice.

“You knew?””

Olivia swallowed.

“Not like this.””

“When?””

“Last year.””

Samantha stared at her.

“What was he doing here?””

Olivia hesitated.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Olivia, stop.””

“No.””

For the first time, Olivia ignored her mother.

“He came here to talk about an investment.””

Adrian frowned.

“Which investment?””

Olivia looked at him.

“The Whitmore Foundation.””

Adrian froze.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked serious.

“Because the Whitmore Foundation was supposed to be controlled only by Samantha.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Samantha felt confused.

“Me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father created it before the crash.””

“What is it?””

“A trust.””

Adrian looked at the documents.

“If Samantha survived, everything was transferred to her when she turned twenty-one.””

The room went completely still.

Samantha’s birthday had been two months ago.

The day she turned twenty-one.

The day she became an adult.

The day something changed.

“Wait,” Samantha whispered.

“My twenty-first birthday…”

Daniel nodded.

“Was when the trust became active.””

Victoria looked terrified.

“And that means…”

“Yes.””

Daniel finished.

“Someone knows Samantha is alive.””

A cold silence spread through the room.

Samantha suddenly understood.

The billionaire dinner.

The sudden interest.

The questions.

Everything.

Someone had found out.

Adrian looked at her.

“We need to leave.””

Samantha looked surprised.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if someone spent twenty years hiding you, they won’t stop now.””

Before Samantha could answer, a loud sound came from outside.

A crash.

Everyone turned toward the windows.

The security lights around the mansion suddenly turned on.

Then off.

Then on again.

Daniel immediately moved toward the window.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel stared outside.

“Someone is here.””

Victoria’s face went pale.

“How?””

Adrian reached for his phone.

“No signal.””

Samantha felt fear rising.

The mansion that had always seemed untouchable suddenly felt fragile.

Like a beautiful glass box.

Easy to break.

A second later, the front doors opened.

The security guard stumbled inside.

His face was bleeding.

Victoria screamed.

“What happened?””

The guard looked terrified.

“Someone got past the gate.””

Adrian moved forward.

“How many?””

The guard struggled to speak.

“Only one.””

Everyone froze.

Only one person.

Somehow that was worse.

Because one person who could enter the Collins mansion without permission wasn’t ordinary.

The lights suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Samantha heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming from the hallway.

Someone wasn’t rushing.

Someone wasn’t afraid.

They knew exactly where they were going.

Then a voice echoed through the mansion.

A voice Samantha had never heard.

But Adrian recognized immediately.

“No…”

Samantha turned toward him.

“What?””

Adrian looked terrified.

“It’s him.””

The footsteps stopped.

A man appeared in the doorway.

Older.

Confident.

Untouched by fear.

The same man from the photograph.

The same man who had stood beside Ethan Whitmore twenty years ago.

Adrian whispered his name.

“Richard Vale.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Adrian.””

Nobody moved.

Richard looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on Samantha.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like someone looking at a problem that had returned.

“So…”

He said softly.

“The little Whitmore girl survived.””

Samantha felt every person in the room tense.

Richard stepped closer.

“I spent twenty years wondering where Victoria hid you.””

Victoria’s voice shook.

“You have no right to be here.””

Richard laughed.

“Actually, Victoria…”

He looked around the mansion.

“I think I have every right.””

Samantha looked at him.

“Who are you?””

Richard smiled.

“A friend of your father.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Richard ignored him.

“I knew Ethan Whitmore better than anyone.””

Samantha’s hands tightened.

“My father trusted you.””

Richard smiled.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And that was his biggest mistake.””

The room went silent.

Adrian’s face hardened.

“What did you do?””

Richard looked at him.

“What your father should have done.””

“What?””

“Protected his empire.””

Adrian stared.

“My father trusted you.””

Richard shrugged.

“Your father was weak.””

The insult changed something in Adrian.

For the first time, Samantha saw anger in him.

Real anger.

Richard looked back at Samantha.

“You have no idea what your father left you.””

“I know enough.””

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“You know nothing.””

He stepped closer.

“You think you inherited money?””

Samantha stayed silent.

“You think this is about a company?””

He shook his head.

“It’s much bigger.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Richard…”

Richard smiled.

“Tell her.””

Daniel didn’t speak.

Samantha looked between them.

“Tell me what?””

Richard answered.

“The reason your parents died.””

The room went silent.

Then he said:

“They weren’t killed because they discovered I was stealing from them.””

Samantha felt cold.

“Then why?””

Richard looked directly at her.

“They discovered something far more dangerous.””

He smiled.

“Your father discovered that someone inside his own family had betrayed him.””

Nobody spoke.

Samantha felt her heart stop.

“Inside his family?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked toward Victoria.

Then toward Daniel.

Then finally toward Samantha.

“Your parents weren’t trying to escape someone else.””

A pause.

“They were trying to escape the person who was supposed to protect you.””

Samantha’s eyes widened.

Because Richard wasn’t looking at Adrian.

He wasn’t looking at himself.

He was looking at someone else in the room.

Someone Samantha had trusted her entire life.

And then Richard said the words that destroyed everything:

“The person who gave you to Victoria…”

May you like

He pointed.

“…was your own mother.””
