The Daughter They Never Saw / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Truth Buried for Twenty Years

The word stared back at Samantha like it had been waiting for her.

*ADOPTION.*

For a moment, she couldn’t move.

She couldn’t think.

She couldn’t even feel the cold marble floor beneath her feet.

All she could see was that one word.

The word that explained nothing.

And somehow explained everything.

Charlotte was still inside the office, holding the folder with shaking hands.

Samantha stepped backward quietly.

Her heart was pounding so loudly she was afraid Charlotte would hear it.

But Charlotte didn’t notice.

She was too focused on the documents.

Too focused on the secret that had been hidden from everyone.

Samantha returned to her room without making a sound.

She closed the door.

Locked it.

Then she sat on the edge of her bed.

Adoption.

The word kept repeating.

She had imagined many explanations.

Maybe she was secretly related to someone powerful.

Maybe there was a family disagreement.

Maybe Victoria had made some mistake years ago.

But adoption?

She pressed her hands against her face.

“Who am I?””

The question escaped before she could stop it.

For twenty years, she had lived inside the Collins mansion.

She had shared their last name.

She had called Victoria “Mom.””

She had watched Olivia and Charlotte receive love she never understood.

But now she wondered…

Was she ever truly a Collins?

The next morning, Samantha woke up after barely sleeping.

The mansion was already alive.

Employees moved through the halls.

Breakfast was being prepared.

Victoria was giving orders.

Nothing looked different.

But Samantha felt like everything had changed.

Because now she knew there was a secret.

And secrets changed the way you saw everything.

She entered the kitchen quietly.

Usually, she would immediately start preparing breakfast.

But today, she stood still.

She looked around.

The kitchen she had cleaned for years.

The room where she had spent countless hours alone.

The place where Victoria had sent her whenever guests arrived.

For the first time, Samantha didn’t see it as her punishment.

She saw it as proof.

Proof of how long she had been ignored.

A voice behind her made her turn.

“You didn’t sleep.””

It was Adrian.

Samantha quickly looked away.

“Good morning.””

“That wasn’t an answer.””

She gave a small smile.

“You notice too much.””

“Someone has to.””

The words were simple.

But they meant more than he realized.

Someone had to notice her.

That was all she had ever wanted.

Adrian looked at her carefully.

“You found something.””

Samantha froze.

“How did you know?””

“Your face.””

She touched her cheek instinctively.

“What about it?””

“You look different.””

She was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“I saw a folder.””

Adrian waited.

“It had my name on it.””

His expression changed slightly.

“And?””

Samantha looked toward the hallway.

“Charlotte found it first.””

“Did you see what was inside?””

She nodded slowly.

“One word.””

Adrian already knew.

“Adoption.””

Samantha looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“But I suspected something was wrong.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother’s reaction yesterday wasn’t the reaction of someone protecting a daughter.””

Samantha looked down.

“What was it?””

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“Someone protecting a secret.””

Before Samantha could respond, footsteps echoed.

Olivia entered the kitchen.

She stopped when she saw Adrian.

Her expression immediately changed.

She smiled.

“Adrian. I was looking for you.””

Samantha noticed the difference.

With him, Olivia became softer.

More charming.

She walked closer.

“I thought maybe you would like to join me for breakfast.””

Adrian glanced at Samantha.

Then back at Olivia.

“Thank you, but I’m not hungry.””

Olivia’s smile weakened.

“Oh.””

A moment of silence passed.

Then she looked at Samantha.

“What is she doing here?””

Samantha almost laughed.

The question was ridiculous.

Because they were standing in a kitchen.

Her kitchen.

The same kitchen she had worked in every morning.

But Olivia said it like Samantha had entered somewhere forbidden.

“I live here,” Samantha replied.

Olivia rolled her eyes.

“Of course you do.””

Adrian noticed the tension.

“Do you always speak to your sister like that?””

Olivia’s expression changed.

“My sister?””

“Yes.””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Adrian, Samantha is different.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Olivia crossed her arms.

“Because it’s true.””

“How?””

Olivia hesitated.

“She’s not like us.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Maybe that’s because you never let her be.””

The words hit harder than Olivia expected.

She looked away.

For the first time, she didn’t have an answer.

Later that morning, Victoria gathered everyone in the living room.

The same room where she had proudly introduced Olivia and Charlotte the night before.

But today, the atmosphere was different.

Heavy.

Victoria stood near the fireplace.

Olivia and Charlotte sat together.

Samantha stood alone.

Adrian sat across from them.

Victoria looked uncomfortable.

“I believe we need to discuss what happened.””

Samantha stared at her.

“What happened?””

Victoria took a breath.

“Your discovery.””

Charlotte looked at her mother.

“So it’s true?””

Victoria’s eyes moved toward Charlotte.

“You went through my office?””

Charlotte looked angry.

“You hid my sister’s adoption from me.””

The room became silent.

Samantha looked at Charlotte.

Sister.

The word sounded strange.

But it also sounded comforting.

Victoria’s face hardened.

“Watch your words.””

“No,” Charlotte replied.

Her voice surprised everyone.

“No, Mom. You watch yours.””

Victoria stared at her.

Charlotte stood.

“I found the documents.””

Olivia looked confused.

“What documents?””

Charlotte looked at her.

“The ones proving Samantha isn’t your biological daughter.””

Olivia went completely still.

“What?””

Samantha watched her sisters carefully.

For the first time, they looked as shocked as she felt.

Victoria sighed.

“I was going to explain.””

“When?”” Charlotte asked.

“After the dinner?””

“After Samantha was gone?””

The question made Victoria’s expression change.

Samantha noticed.

Gone?

“What does that mean?”” Samantha asked.

Nobody answered.

Her stomach tightened.

Victoria looked at her.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

Silence.

For years, Samantha had waited for this.

She had waited for Victoria to tell her why.

Why she was treated differently.

Why she was never enough.

Now the moment had arrived.

But Victoria still hesitated.

Finally, she spoke.

“When you were born, your biological parents couldn’t take care of you.””

Samantha’s heart tightened.

“So they gave me up?””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you adopted me?””

“Yes.””

The answer should have brought relief.

Instead, it created more questions.

“Then why did you hate me?””

The room went silent.

Victoria looked shocked.

“I never hated you.””

Samantha laughed softly.

The sound was painful.

“Really?””

She stepped forward.

“Then why did you hide me?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Samantha continued.

“Why did Olivia and Charlotte get everything while I got nothing?””

“Samantha—”

“Why did you tell me I didn’t belong?””

Her voice cracked.

But she didn’t stop.

“Why did you make me feel like I was a mistake?””

Victoria looked away.

And that hurt more than any answer.

Because it meant Samantha already knew.

Victoria had no excuse.

Adrian watched silently.

He saw something in Samantha that nobody else in the room saw.

Not weakness.

Courage.

She had spent twenty years being pushed down.

And somehow, she was still standing.

Then Victoria finally spoke.

“There is more you don’t know.””

Samantha froze.

“What?””

Victoria looked at Adrian.

Then at the documents on the table.

“Your adoption wasn’t supposed to happen.””

Everyone became silent.

Samantha felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria walked toward the folder.

Her fingers touched the papers.

“When I adopted you, I didn’t know who you really were.””

Adrian frowned.

“What are you saying?””

Victoria looked directly at Samantha.

And for the first time in twenty years…

her eyes weren’t cold.

They were afraid.

“You were never just an adopted child.””

Samantha felt her heartbeat increase.

“What am I?””

Victoria opened the folder.

Pulled out a document.

And placed it on the table.

“Your biological parents left something behind.””

Samantha looked down.

There was a name written on the paper.

A name she had never seen before.

A name that made Adrian’s expression suddenly change.

Because he recognized it.

And when he whispered the words…

everyone in the room heard him.

“That’s impossible.””

Samantha looked at him.

“What?””

Adrian stared at the document.

Then at Samantha.

His face had lost all color.

Because the name written there belonged to one of the most powerful families in America.

A family believed to have disappeared twenty years ago.

A family connected to his own past.

And suddenly…

May you like

Samantha realized the secret hidden inside the Collins mansion was much bigger than adoption.

It was about who she truly was.
