The Daughter They Never Saw / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Name

Adrian Bennett had met hundreds of wealthy families.

He knew the rules.

Smile at the right moments.

Compliment the right people.

Pretend not to notice the desperation behind expensive clothing and perfect manners.

But something about the Collins mansion felt different.

Not because of the marble floors.

Not because of the ocean view.

Not because of the priceless paintings covering the walls.

It was because of the girl in the kitchen.

The girl everyone ignored.

The girl who looked like she was trying to disappear.

Adrian sat at the enormous dining table while Victoria continued talking about her daughters.

“Olivia graduated from one of the finest private universities in California,” Victoria said proudly.

Olivia smiled.

“And Charlotte has always had incredible taste. She’s very interested in fashion and charity work.””

Charlotte lifted her glass.

“I believe a woman should represent her family well.””

Adrian nodded politely.

“That’s admirable.””

But his attention wasn’t completely on the conversation.

His eyes kept drifting toward the kitchen doorway.

The place where Samantha had vanished.

Victoria noticed.

Her smile became slightly tighter.

“Mr. Bennett, perhaps you would like to see the garden after dinner? The view is beautiful.””

Adrian looked back at her.

“Actually, I was wondering something.””

Victoria straightened.

“Of course.””

“Your third daughter.””

The table became silent.

Olivia and Charlotte exchanged a quick glance.

Victoria placed her fork down carefully.

“Samantha?””

“Yes.””

“What about her?””

Adrian studied her expression.

For someone who claimed Samantha was her daughter, Victoria looked strangely uncomfortable even hearing her name.

“I was just curious,” Adrian said.

“Why wasn’t she having dinner with us?””

Victoria gave a small laugh.

“Oh, Samantha prefers helping around the house.””

From the kitchen, Samantha heard those words.

She stopped drying a glass.

Prefers?

The lie almost made her laugh.

She had never been given a choice.

Never.

Not once.

Adrian noticed the hesitation in Victoria’s voice.

“She prefers?””

“Yes,” Victoria answered quickly.

“She’s always been different from Olivia and Charlotte. She doesn’t enjoy social events.””

Olivia smiled.

“She’s shy.””

Charlotte added, “And honestly, she’s more comfortable doing simple things.””

The way they said it made Samantha’s fingers tighten around the glass.

Simple things.

That was the word they always used.

Not talented.

Not kind.

Not hardworking.

Simple.

As if she was less than them.

Adrian leaned back in his chair.

“And what does she do?””

Victoria frowned slightly.

“Excuse me?””

“What are her interests?””

The question surprised everyone.

Olivia blinked.

Charlotte looked confused.

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“She doesn’t have any serious interests.””

Adrian said nothing.

But he remembered something.

When he looked into the kitchen earlier, Samantha wasn’t moving like someone who didn’t care.

She moved carefully.

Precisely.

Every plate was placed perfectly.

Every detail was handled.

People who didn’t care didn’t work like that.

After dinner, Victoria guided Adrian through the mansion.

She showed him the private wine room.

The expensive artwork.

The indoor pool.

Everything designed to impress.

But Adrian barely reacted.

Finally, they reached the hallway outside the kitchen.

A soft sound came from inside.

Someone humming.

Adrian stopped.

Victoria noticed immediately.

“That’s just Samantha.””

The way she said the name sounded almost like an apology.

Adrian opened the kitchen door slightly.

Samantha was there alone.

She was cleaning the last few dishes.

She didn’t notice him at first.

Then she turned.

Her eyes widened.

“Mr. Bennett?””

Adrian smiled.

“You remember my name.””

Samantha looked embarrassed.

“Everyone knows your name.””

“That’s not what I meant.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be here.””

“Why?””

The question caught her off guard.

“Because my mother asked me not to come out.””

Adrian looked toward the dining room.

“Your mother?””

Samantha nodded.

“Yes.””

There was something painful in the way she said it.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You don’t seem like someone who likes hiding.””

A small smile appeared on Samantha’s face.

“You learn to like things you don’t have a choice about.””

The sentence stayed with him.

Before Adrian could respond, footsteps approached.

Victoria.

Her expression changed the second she saw them together.

“Samantha.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Yes?””

“What are you doing?””

Samantha immediately stepped back.

“I was just finishing cleaning.””

Victoria looked at Adrian.

“I apologize. She shouldn’t bother you.””

Adrian’s eyebrows lowered.

“She wasn’t bothering me.””

Victoria forced a smile.

“Of course. But Samantha has responsibilities.””

Responsibilities.

That word again.

Adrian looked between them.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

The next morning, Samantha woke before sunrise.

She always did.

The Collins mansion was quiet at that hour.

No guests.

No pretending.

No fake smiles.

Just silence.

She walked downstairs and entered the kitchen.

Making breakfast was part of her daily routine.

She prepared coffee for Victoria.

Tea for Charlotte.

Fresh fruit for Olivia.

She knew exactly how everyone liked everything.

But nobody knew how she liked anything.

Nobody ever asked.

While she arranged the plates, she heard footsteps.

She turned around.

Adrian Bennett stood at the kitchen entrance.

She froze.

“What are you doing here?””

Adrian smiled slightly.

“I could ask you the same thing.””

Samantha looked confused.

“I live here.””

He looked around the kitchen.

“Do you?””

The question made her uncomfortable.

She looked away.

“Mr. Bennett…”

“Adrian.””

She hesitated.

“I shouldn’t call you that.””

“Why not?””

“Because people like me don’t usually call people like you by their first names.””

Adrian studied her.

“People like you?””

Samantha immediately regretted saying it.

“I didn’t mean—”

“No,” Adrian interrupted gently.

“I want to understand.””

For the first time in a long time, someone wanted to understand.

Not judge.

Not compare.

Understand.

Samantha looked down at the coffee cup in her hand.

“I’m just Samantha.””

Adrian smiled.

“That’s a strange answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

“No. It sounds like something someone says when they’ve spent years being told they’re not important.””

Her hand stopped.

The room became quiet.

Because he was right.

And that scared her.

Before she could answer, voices came from the hallway.

Olivia.

Charlotte.

And Victoria.

They entered the kitchen.

The moment they saw Adrian standing there with Samantha, their expressions changed.

Olivia smiled.

But it wasn’t a friendly smile.

“Oh.””

Charlotte crossed her arms.

“This is unexpected.””

Victoria walked forward.

“Adrian, I hope Samantha hasn’t taken too much of your time.””

Adrian looked at her.

“She hasn’t.””

Victoria glanced at Samantha.

“Go finish your work.””

Samantha nodded.

“Yes, ma’am.””

She started walking away.

But Adrian stopped her.

“Samantha.””

She turned.

“Yes?””

He looked at the coffee cup she had prepared.

“Did you make this?””

She nodded.

“For your mother?””

“Yes.””

“Does anyone ever make coffee for you?””

The question was so simple.

But Samantha didn’t know how to answer.

Because the answer was no.

Before she could speak, Charlotte laughed.

“Adrian, you’re very kind. But Samantha doesn’t need that kind of attention.””

Adrian looked at her.

“And why is that?””

Charlotte’s smile disappeared slightly.

“Because she’s always been different.””

Adrian remained silent.

Then he said something that surprised everyone.

“Different doesn’t mean less.””

Nobody spoke.

Samantha looked at him.

For the first time in years…

Someone had defended her.

Not privately.

Not secretly.

In front of everyone.

Victoria quickly changed the subject.

“Adrian, you came here to discuss business, didn’t you?””

“Yes.””

“Then perhaps we should go to my office.””

Adrian nodded.

But before leaving, he looked at Samantha one more time.

And she noticed something.

He wasn’t looking at her like she was a servant.

He wasn’t looking at her like she was invisible.

He looked at her like she mattered.

That afternoon, Samantha thought the strange moment was over.

She thought Adrian Bennett would return to his billionaire life and forget about the girl washing dishes in the Collins mansion.

She was wrong.

Because that evening, while she was cleaning the upstairs hallway, she overheard Victoria talking on the phone.

“No, Adrian cannot find out.””

Samantha stopped.

Her mother’s voice sounded nervous.

“There are documents proving everything. If he discovers the truth about Samantha’s birth, everything will collapse.””

Samantha’s heart began pounding.

Birth?

Documents?

What was Victoria hiding?

She stepped closer to the door.

Then she heard the sentence that changed everything.

“After twenty years, I finally got rid of the problem. I won’t let Samantha take what belongs to Olivia and Charlotte.””

Samantha covered her mouth.

Her hands started shaking.

Because for the first time…

She realized Victoria wasn’t just ignoring her.

She was hiding something.

May you like

And whatever was written in those documents…

could destroy the entire Collins family.
