The Daughter They Never Saw / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Forgotten Daughter

“Tonight, one of my daughters will become the woman everyone in America wants to know.””

Victoria Collins said those words while standing beneath a crystal chandelier worth more than most people’s homes.

She smiled at her reflection in the golden mirror.

She didn’t notice the girl in the kitchen who stopped washing a plate for just one second.

She didn’t notice the hurt in her eyes.

Because in Victoria’s world, only beauty, wealth, and reputation mattered.

The massive mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean glittered beneath the California sunset. The walls were covered with expensive paintings. The marble floors reflected every ray of orange light coming through the enormous windows. The crystal decorations hanging from the ceiling sparkled like tiny stars.

Everything inside the Collins mansion screamed one thing.

Money.

Power.

Perfection.

And tonight, Victoria believed her family would finally reach another level.

A billionaire was coming to dinner.

A man whose name appeared in magazines.

A man who owned companies across the country.

A man every wealthy family wanted their daughters to marry.

And Victoria had already decided that one of her two favorite daughters would become his wife.

“Olivia, Charlotte, come here,” Victoria called.

Her voice instantly changed from cold and demanding to sweet.

Her two daughters walked toward her.

Olivia and Charlotte Collins were twenty years old, with perfectly styled hair, designer dresses, and jewelry that glittered around their necks and wrists.

They looked like they belonged on the cover of a luxury magazine.

Olivia looked at herself in the mirror and adjusted her diamond earrings.

“Do you think he will like this dress?”” she asked.

Victoria smiled proudly.

“Of course he will. Men like him don’t choose ordinary women. They choose women who understand elegance.””

Charlotte laughed softly.

“So basically, someone like us.””

Victoria touched her daughter’s cheek.

“Exactly.””

The three of them laughed together.

But across the room, near the kitchen entrance, someone quietly lowered her head.

Samantha Collins.

The third daughter.

The forgotten daughter.

She stood beside the sink wearing a simple white apron.

Her hands were covered in soap bubbles.

Her hair was tied back loosely, with a few strands falling across her tired face.

While Olivia and Charlotte prepared for a billionaire’s arrival, Samantha had spent the last three hours cleaning plates, glasses, and silverware from the afternoon preparations.

Nobody asked if she was tired.

Nobody offered help.

Nobody even looked at her.

The mansion was full of people.

But Samantha had never felt more alone.

She carefully placed another glass onto the drying rack.

Then she heard footsteps behind her.

Victoria.

The moment the woman entered the kitchen, her expression changed.

She looked at Samantha as if she was looking at a problem.

“You’re still not finished?””

Samantha quickly turned around.

“I’m almost done, Mom.””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that when you’re working?””

The words hit harder than Samantha expected.

She lowered her eyes.

“Sorry… ma’am.””

Victoria looked toward the dining room.

“The guests will arrive soon. The kitchen needs to be perfect.””

“I understand.””

“Then move faster.””

Samantha nodded.

“Yes, ma’am.””

Victoria turned away, but before leaving, she stopped.

“And Samantha?””

“Yes?””

“Don’t come into the living room tonight.””

Samantha froze.

“What?””

Victoria sighed like Samantha had asked something unreasonable.

“You heard me. Tonight is important. Olivia and Charlotte need to make a good impression.””

“I just thought maybe I could—”

“You thought wrong.””

Silence filled the kitchen.

Victoria walked closer.

“You know how people judge a family. They notice everything.””

Samantha stared at the floor.

“And what will they notice about me?””

For a moment, Victoria said nothing.

Then she answered coldly.

“They’ll notice that you don’t belong in their world.””

The words stayed in the air after Victoria left.

Samantha stood completely still.

The sound of the ocean outside filled the silence.

Waves crashed against the cliffs below the mansion.

But inside, her heart felt quieter than ever.

She looked at her reflection in the dark kitchen window.

Same brown eyes.

Same face.

Same blood.

She was Victoria Collins’ daughter.

At least, that was what the birth certificate said.

But inside this house, she had always felt like a stranger.

A memory from years ago suddenly returned.

She was eight years old, sitting at the kitchen table while Olivia and Charlotte opened birthday presents.

She remembered holding a small handmade card.

She had spent days creating it for her mother.

But when she walked toward Victoria and said, “Happy birthday, Mom,” Victoria barely looked at it.

“Put it somewhere. I’m busy.””

Then Olivia called Victoria over.

And just like that…

Samantha disappeared again.

She shook her head, pushing away the memory.

She had learned a long time ago not to expect love from people who refused to give it.

Still…

A small part of her always hoped.

A small part of her wanted to know what it felt like to be chosen.

Not because she was useful.

Not because she cleaned the house.

But because she was family.

A few hours later, the mansion transformed.

The dining table was covered with expensive dishes.

Candles filled the room with warm light.

The sound of laughter echoed through the halls.

Samantha stayed hidden in the kitchen, exactly where Victoria ordered her to be.

Through the doorway, she could hear Olivia and Charlotte talking.

“He’s even richer than I expected,” Olivia whispered.

Charlotte giggled.

“I heard he bought a private island last year.””

Victoria sounded pleased.

“Remember, confidence matters. A man like Adrian Bennett needs a woman who can stand beside him.””

Samantha stopped moving.

Adrian Bennett.

She had heard that name before.

Everyone had.

The youngest billionaire in California.

A businessman who had built his empire before turning thirty.

The front doors opened.

A deep voice filled the mansion.

“Good evening.””

Everyone immediately became silent.

Samantha didn’t mean to look.

But something made her turn.

From the kitchen doorway, she saw him.

Adrian Bennett.

Tall.

Calm.

Wearing a black suit that looked effortless.

But what surprised Samantha wasn’t his wealth.

It was his expression.

He wasn’t looking at Olivia or Charlotte.

He was looking around the room.

Almost like he was searching for something.

Then his eyes moved toward the kitchen.

Toward her.

For one second, Samantha forgot to breathe.

Their eyes met.

And unlike everyone else in the mansion…

Adrian didn’t look through her.

He actually saw her.

But before either of them could say anything, Victoria stepped between them.

“Samantha!””

Her voice cut through the room.

Everyone turned.

Samantha immediately looked down.

Victoria forced a smile in front of Adrian.

“I apologize. She’s just helping with the dinner preparations.””

Adrian looked at Samantha.

“Your daughter?””

The question made the room strangely quiet.

Victoria hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Samantha noticed.

“Yes,” Victoria finally answered.

Then she smiled.

“But she’s not part of tonight’s arrangements.””

Samantha felt her chest tighten.

She lowered her head and walked back into the kitchen.

Behind her, she heard Olivia laughing.

She heard Charlotte whisper something.

She heard Victoria continuing the conversation.

But she didn’t hear the sound of Adrian Bennett watching her leave.

And she didn’t know that the man everyone wanted her sisters to marry had just asked the one question that would change everything.

May you like

“Who is she?””

Because the answer to that question was something Victoria Collins had spent twenty years trying to hide.
