The Daughter They Never Saw / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Her Past

The entire mansion seemed to stop breathing.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The stranger stood at the entrance, his hand resting lightly on the handle of his cane.

He looked older than Adrian’s father would have been.

His silver hair was neatly combed back.

His expensive black suit carried the quiet confidence of someone who had spent his entire life around powerful people.

But it wasn’t his appearance that frightened Samantha.

It was the way he looked at her.

Like he had been searching for her for twenty years.

Like seeing her alive was something he never believed would happen.

Victoria’s face had lost all color.

She gripped the armrest of the chair.

“No…”

The stranger looked at her.

“Hello, Victoria.””

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

Victoria stood slowly.

“How are you here?””

The man smiled slightly.

“That’s an interesting question coming from someone who spent twenty years pretending a child was dead.””

Samantha’s heart dropped.

A child.

Dead.

She looked between them.

“What is he talking about?””

Nobody answered.

The stranger stepped into the living room.

Adrian immediately moved closer to Samantha.

Not touching her.

Not controlling her.

Just standing beside her.

A quiet sign that she wasn’t alone.

The stranger noticed.

“Adrian Bennett.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You know me?””

“Of course.””

The man looked around the mansion.

“Your father and I knew each other very well.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“My father died ten years ago.””

“Yes.””

The man nodded.

“But before he died, he spent years trying to uncover what happened to the Whitmores.””

Samantha looked at Adrian.

“You knew?””

Adrian shook his head.

“Not this.””

The stranger looked at Samantha again.

“My name is Daniel Hayes.””

Samantha waited.

“And I was your father’s attorney.””

The words felt unreal.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Ethan Whitmore.””

The name sounded strange.

A name from a life she never knew.

A name that belonged to someone she had never met.

“He left instructions,” Daniel continued.

“Instructions?””

“For the day you were found.””

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was sharp.

Fearful.

Daniel looked at her.

“No, Victoria. It’s been twenty years of enough.””

Samantha stared at Victoria.

“You knew he existed?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

That silence hurt.

Again.

Always silence.

Always secrets.

Samantha’s voice became quieter.

“You knew all these years.””

Victoria looked at her.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Samantha shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“But nobody tells me what I needed protection from.””

Daniel looked at Samantha.

“Your parents were not killed because of an accident.””

She already knew.

But hearing it again made her chest tighten.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked toward the envelope on the table.

“Because of what your father discovered.””

Adrian picked up the envelope.

“The letter.””

Daniel nodded.

“That letter contains information that could destroy powerful people.””

Olivia and Charlotte exchanged nervous looks.

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, you don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

“You’ll put her in danger.””

Daniel looked at Samantha.

“She has been in danger since the day she was born.””

The room became silent.

Samantha felt cold.

“Who wanted my parents dead?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Victoria.

“Tell her.””

Victoria’s eyes hardened.

“No.””

Daniel sighed.

“You really haven’t changed.””

Samantha looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel walked closer.

“It means Victoria knows exactly who caused the crash.””

Samantha turned toward Victoria.

“Mom?””

The word came out automatically.

But it felt different now.

Less like love.

More like a question.

Victoria looked away.

“I didn’t know everything.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You knew enough.””

Samantha felt her anger rising.

“Enough for what?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Enough to know someone was coming for you.””

The confession shocked everyone.

Charlotte stood.

“You knew Samantha was being hunted?””

Victoria looked at her.

“I was trying to keep her hidden.””

Olivia stared at her mother.

“So all those years…”

Her voice broke.

“You weren’t ignoring her?””

Samantha looked at Olivia.

The question almost made her laugh.

Because even now, Olivia was trying to understand.

Victoria looked at Samantha.

“I was afraid that if people knew who you were, they would come back.””

Samantha’s voice was quiet.

“And your solution was to make me feel worthless?””

Victoria had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Why didn’t you tell her the truth?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because truth gets people killed.””

Daniel interrupted.

“No. Greed gets people killed.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked directly at Samantha.

“Your father discovered someone inside his own circle was stealing from the Whitmore empire.””

Samantha frowned.

“Someone close to him?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the room.

Then his eyes stopped on Victoria.

Her expression changed instantly.

Samantha noticed.

And so did Adrian.

“Victoria?””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“Your adoptive mother was not just a house employee.””

The room went silent.

Samantha looked at Victoria.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“She was Ethan Whitmore’s financial assistant.””

Samantha felt dizzy.

“You worked for my father?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

The answer surprised Samantha.

Victoria looked older suddenly.

Tired.

Broken.

“I was young. I wanted money. Power. A different life.””

She looked around the mansion.

“At first, I thought working for the Whitmores would give me everything.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“And then she discovered Ethan was planning to expose the person stealing from him.””

Samantha looked at him.

“What happened?””

Daniel glanced at the envelope.

“Your father prepared evidence.””

“The evidence?””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked at the letter.

“And someone wanted it destroyed.””

Daniel nodded.

“The night of the crash, Ethan and his wife were traveling with Samantha.””

Samantha froze.

“With me?””

Daniel nodded.

“You were supposed to leave the country.””

“Why?””

“Because your father believed someone would target you next.””

Samantha touched her chest.

She had spent twenty years believing she was abandoned.

But the truth was completely different.

Her parents weren’t leaving her.

They were trying to save her.

“What happened after the crash?””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“She found Samantha first.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with guilt.

“She was alive.””

Her voice shook.

“She was crying.””

Samantha stared.

“You remember?””

Victoria nodded.

“I remember everything.””

“Then why did you never tell me?””

Victoria looked at her.

“Because the person who caused the crash was still looking.””

Daniel interrupted.

“And because Victoria made a deal.””

Samantha turned.

“A deal?””

Victoria looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“She deserves the truth.””

Samantha’s heart raced.

“What deal?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Twenty years ago, someone paid Victoria to hide you.””

The room went silent.

Samantha felt like she couldn’t hear anything else.

Someone paid her?

Paid her to hide a child?

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Victoria looked away.

And Samantha realized something.

Her mother wasn’t afraid of the past.

She was afraid of a person still alive.

“Who paid you?””

Samantha’s voice shook.

Victoria remained silent.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Answer her.””

Finally, Victoria whispered:

“The person who wanted your parents gone.””

Samantha waited.

The entire mansion waited.

Then Victoria said the name.

A name that changed everything.

“The person who destroyed the Whitmore family…”

She looked at Adrian.

“…was your father’s closest friend.””

Adrian froze.

“My father’s friend?””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel slowly opened the old envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

He placed it on the table.

A photograph of three men standing together.

Ethan Whitmore.

Adrian’s father.

And one more person.

A man Samantha recognized immediately.

Because she had seen his face on magazine covers.

Because the entire country knew his name.

Because he was one of the richest men alive.

Daniel looked at Samantha.

“The man who killed your parents is still powerful.””

Samantha stared at the photograph.

Her hands became cold.

Because the man standing beside her father twenty years ago…

was the same man who had just been announced as Adrian Bennett’s future business partner.

And underneath the photograph was a handwritten note.

May you like

A warning from her father.

*Never trust a Bennett.*
