The Daughter They Never Saw / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Mother Who Chose Silence

Nobody spoke.

The accusation hung in the mansion like smoke.

Heavy.

Impossible to ignore.

Samantha stared at Victoria.

Her mother.

The woman who raised her.

The woman who had told her for twenty years that she was difficult, different, and unwanted.

Now another person was standing in front of her claiming something even worse.

That Victoria had been the reason she was hidden.

That Victoria had taken her away.

That Victoria had chosen silence.

Samantha waited for Victoria to deny it.

Immediately.

Angrily.

Anything.

But Victoria said nothing.

And that silence was more painful than any confession.

“Mom?””

The word came out broken.

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Samantha…”

“No.””

Samantha shook her head.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

Everyone watched her.

Even Olivia and Charlotte.

Because they had never seen Samantha like this.

Never seen the quiet girl finally stop accepting pain.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Victoria looked at Richard.

Then back at Samantha.

“I…”

Her voice failed.

Samantha felt her chest tighten.

“You can’t even say it.””

Richard smiled.

“I told you.””

Daniel’s expression was dark.

“Richard, stop.””

Richard looked at him.

“Why? She deserves to know.””

Samantha turned toward Daniel.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

Another secret.

Another person who had known.

She laughed softly.

“Of course.””

Her voice trembled.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Samantha.””

She looked at him.

“I don’t know who to believe anymore.””

And for the first time since he met her, Adrian had no immediate answer.

Because the truth was buried under twenty years of lies.

Richard walked deeper into the room.

“Your father trusted the wrong people.””

Adrian glared at him.

“You’re the last person who should talk about trust.””

Richard smiled.

“You sound just like him.””

“My father died because of people like you.””

Richard’s expression didn’t change.

“Your father died because he was too loyal.””

The words made Adrian’s hands tighten.

Samantha noticed.

He wasn’t just angry.

He was hurt.

Because Richard wasn’t only attacking her family.

He was attacking his.

Victoria suddenly spoke.

“Leave.””

Everyone looked at her.

Richard smiled.

“Still giving orders?””

“You have no reason to be here.””

“I have every reason.””

He looked at Samantha.

“She deserves the truth.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“No.””

The fear in her voice was obvious.

Not anger.

Fear.

Samantha noticed.

And she hated that part of her still cared.

“Why are you afraid?””

Victoria looked at her.

“Because once you know everything…”

She paused.

“You will never forgive me.””

The sentence broke something inside Samantha.

Because it wasn’t a denial.

It was a warning.

Samantha slowly walked toward the center of the room.

“Twenty years.””

Her voice was quiet.

“Twenty years I wondered why you didn’t love me.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I did love you.””

Samantha looked at her.

“Did you?””

Victoria flinched.

“You took me in.””

“Yes.””

“You fed me.””

“Yes.””

“You gave me a home.””

Samantha nodded.

“But you never made me feel like I belonged.””

The room was silent.

“You gave me a room, Mom.””

She swallowed.

“But you never gave me a family.””

Victoria looked devastated.

For a moment, she looked like the woman Samantha had always wanted her to be.

A mother.

Regretful.

Broken.

But Samantha had spent too many years waiting for that moment.

And it came too late.

Richard interrupted.

“She didn’t just hide you.””

Everyone looked at him.

“She made a deal.””

Samantha turned.

“What deal?””

Victoria’s face changed.

“Richard.””

He ignored her.

“After the crash, Victoria found you alive.””

Samantha looked at Victoria.

“You said you saved me.””

“I did.””

Richard nodded.

“She did.””

The agreement surprised Samantha.

“But then someone contacted her.””

Victoria looked down.

“Who?””

Richard smiled.

“The people who wanted Ethan Whitmore’s legacy gone.””

Adrian frowned.

“Why would they contact her?””

“Because she had something they needed.””

Daniel answered quietly.

“The child.””

Samantha felt sick.

“They wanted me?””

Richard nodded.

“You were the only heir.””

Samantha looked at the papers.

“The trust.””

“Yes.””

Richard stepped closer.

“If you died, the Whitmore empire would disappear.””

“And if I lived?””

Richard smiled.

“Then whoever controlled you controlled everything.””

Samantha looked at Victoria.

“So you hid me.””

Victoria whispered:

“Yes.””

“Because they paid you?””

The question hurt.

Victoria looked at her.

“No.””

Samantha waited.

“Then why?””

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“Because I was scared.””

The answer was so simple.

So human.

And somehow it hurt more.

“I was scared they would kill you.””

Samantha stared.

“You could have told me.””

“I couldn’t.””

“You could have trusted me.””

“You were a child.””

“And then I grew up.””

Victoria looked away.

“And by then, it was too late.””

Samantha felt anger rising.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“It wasn’t too late.””

Her voice cracked.

“You had twenty years.””

Nobody spoke.

“You had twenty years to tell me the truth.””

Victoria had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Suddenly, Olivia stepped forward.

“Mom.””

Everyone turned.

Olivia looked at Victoria.

“Is it true?””

Victoria looked at her.

“Olivia…”

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“Was Samantha the daughter you were protecting?””

Victoria stayed silent.

Olivia looked at Samantha.

For the first time, there was no jealousy.

No superiority.

Only guilt.

“I spent my whole life thinking she was less than us.””

Samantha looked away.

Olivia continued.

“But she was the one everyone was trying to protect.””

Charlotte covered her mouth.

“We were horrible to her.””

Nobody corrected her.

Because it was true.

Samantha didn’t know what to say.

She had imagined this moment many times.

Her sisters apologizing.

Her mother regretting everything.

But now that it was happening…

it didn’t feel satisfying.

Because apologies couldn’t return twenty years.

Richard suddenly laughed.

“What a touching family reunion.””

Adrian looked at him coldly.

“You’re enjoying this.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“Because while everyone is busy blaming each other…”

He looked at Samantha.

“…they’re forgetting the most important thing.””

Daniel immediately understood.

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“The documents.””

Samantha froze.

“What documents?””

“The real documents.””

Everyone became tense.

Richard continued.

“Your father didn’t leave only a letter.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

“He left proof.””

Richard looked at Samantha.

“Proof of who betrayed him.””

Adrian frowned.

“Where is it?””

Richard smiled.

“That’s the problem.””

A pause.

“Nobody knows.””

Samantha looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.””

She felt frustrated.

“Then why are you all here?””

Richard answered.

“Because the only person who can find it…”

He pointed at Samantha.

“…is you.””

The room became silent.

Samantha frowned.

“Me?””

Richard nodded.

“Your father created a security system only his daughter could access.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Why didn’t he tell anyone?””

“Because he knew someone close to him was dangerous.””

Everyone became quiet.

Richard smiled.

“And now you have a choice.””

Samantha stared at him.

“What choice?””

“Find the truth.””

He stepped toward the door.

“Or continue living with lies.””

Adrian moved forward.

“You’re not leaving.””

Richard looked amused.

“Are you going to stop me?””

Adrian said nothing.

Because everyone knew Richard had come prepared.

Before leaving, Richard looked at Samantha one last time.

“Your father left you a message.””

Samantha froze.

“What message?””

Richard smiled.

“He said…”

He paused.

“…the person you trust most will be the person who hurts you the most.””

Then he walked away.

The front doors closed.

Silence returned.

But this time, nobody felt safe.

Samantha looked around the room.

At Victoria.

At Daniel.

At Adrian.

At the family she had spent her entire life trying to belong to.

Then her eyes stopped on the old envelope.

Something inside her changed.

For twenty years, she had waited for someone to tell her who she was.

Now she understood.

Nobody was going to give her the truth.

She had to take it.

She reached for the envelope.

“I’m opening this.””

Victoria whispered:

“Samantha…”

She looked at her mother.

“No more secrets.””

Slowly, she broke the seal.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was old.

But the first sentence made her entire body freeze.

Because it began with:

*“My dearest daughter, if you are reading this, then the people who promised to protect you have already failed.””*

Samantha continued reading.

And then she saw the final line.

A line written by her father twenty years ago.

A line that revealed the identity of the person he feared most.

Her hands began shaking.

Because the name written there…

was not Richard Vale.

It was not Victoria.

It was not even a stranger.

It was someone standing beside her right now.

Someone who had spent the entire time pretending to help her.

Someone she never thought she would have to fear.

Samantha slowly looked up.

May you like

And whispered:

“Adrian…”
