Chapter 9: The Truth Nia Was Never Told
The second flash drive fell onto the wooden desk with a soft click.
But to Caleb, it sounded louder than the television breaking.
Louder than every argument.
Louder than every accusation.
Because this one had Nia’s name on it.
Not Daniel’s.
Not Vanessa’s.
Nia’s.
Daniel stared at the label.
His hands slowly tightened into fists.
“Where did you get that?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Nobody touches anything in this house without permission,” Daniel said quietly.
“So tell me.””
Vanessa looked at the flash drive.
Then at Nia.
Something unreadable crossed her face.
“I found it.””
Nia laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because she was tired.
“You always find everything.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
“It means every secret somehow ends up in your hands.””
Daniel picked up the flash drive.
“Why does it have my daughter’s name on it?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“It doesn’t mean what you think.””
“Then tell me what it means.””
Silence.
Caleb watched her.
For the first time since Vanessa entered their lives, she didn’t look like someone controlling the situation.
She looked trapped.
Daniel walked back to the laptop.
“Open it.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
The word came out too quickly.
Everyone froze.
Daniel slowly turned.
“No?””
She corrected herself.
“I mean…”
But it was too late.
The damage was done.
Daniel looked at the flash drive.
Then at her.
“You’ve spent all night telling me everyone else is hiding things.””
His voice hardened.
“Now you’re the one hiding something.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“I was protecting Nia.””
Nia stared.
“From what?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Nia stepped closer.
“I understand that you knew my mother’s secrets before I did.””
The room became silent.
Daniel inserted the drive.
The file appeared.
One video.
The title was simple.
*Nia.*
He clicked.
The screen went black.
Then a voice appeared.
Their mother.
But this time, she wasn’t sitting at a desk.
She was outside.
The background was familiar.
The old garden behind the house.
The place where she used to sit with Nia on summer evenings.
Nia immediately covered her mouth.
Moments later, their mother looked into the camera.
“Hi, sweetheart.””
Nia broke.
A quiet sob escaped her.
Caleb reached for her hand.
She grabbed his.
Their mother continued.
“If you’re watching this, it means you’re older now.””
A small smile appeared on her face.
“I hope you’re still stubborn.””
Nia cried harder.
“Because you always were.””
Daniel looked away.
Their mother laughed softly.
“I hope you still ask too many questions.””
She paused.
“Actually, I hope you never stop.””
The video was filled with warmth.
Not fear.
Not warnings.
Just a mother talking to her daughter.
Then her expression became serious.
“Nia, there is something I need you to know.””
Nia held her breath.
“You were never the reason our family changed.””
The words hit her immediately.
Her shoulders shook.
Their mother continued.
“You were never difficult.””
“You were never a problem.””
“You were never someone who needed to be replaced.””
Nia closed her eyes.
Caleb looked at her.
He understood then.
All this time, she had been carrying Vanessa’s words like they were facts.
Their mother continued.
“After I got sick, I noticed people treating you differently.””
She looked down.
“And I am sorry I wasn’t strong enough to protect you from all of it.””
Daniel wiped his face.
The apology hurt him.
Because he knew exactly who should have protected her.
He should have.
Their mother continued.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
The tone changed.
“There is something Vanessa told you that was not true.””
Nia opened her eyes.
Caleb looked at Vanessa.
Her face had gone pale.
“What did she tell you?”” their mother asked.
The video paused briefly.
Then:
“She told you that your father wanted a new family.””
Nia froze.
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?””
The video continued.
“She told you that if you loved your father, you would stop making things difficult.””
A tear rolled down Nia’s face.
“She told you that I was the reason everyone was unhappy.””
The room became completely silent.
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s not true.””
Nobody looked at her.
Because everyone was listening.
Their mother’s voice softened.
“Nia, your father never wanted to replace you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know he can be quiet.””
A small smile.
“I know he works too much.””
Another pause.
“But he loves you more than anything.””
Nia looked at her father.
Daniel looked broken.
Their mother continued.
“Vanessa knew exactly what to say because she knew what you feared most.””
The video shook slightly.
“She knew you were afraid of losing your father.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“This is edited.””
Nia looked at her.
“You said that about the other video too.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
The video continued.
Their mother reached toward the camera.
“I left something for you.””
She held up a small envelope.
“The truth about what happened before my death.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Truth about what?””
Their mother looked directly at Nia.
“About why I trusted Vanessa.””
The room froze.
Nia whispered:
“What?””
Their mother continued.
“I know this will be hard to hear.””
She took a deep breath.
“But Vanessa was not always the person I feared.””
Everyone looked confused.
Even Daniel.
“She was once someone I thought I could trust.””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
The confidence was gone.
Their mother continued.
“When I first met Vanessa, she helped me during my illness.””
Nia frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Their mother nodded slightly.
“She was kind.””
A pause.
“Until she found out about my will.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Will?””
The video continued.
“After that, things changed.””
Their mother looked sad.
“She became interested in what would happen after I was gone.””
Caleb felt his stomach tighten.
Their mother continued.
“She asked questions about the house.””
“About money.””
“About custody.””
Nia whispered:
“Custody?””
Daniel looked at her.
The word hung between them.
Their mother continued.
“That was when I realized Vanessa wasn’t trying to help me.””
“She was preparing.””
The video paused.
Then their mother said:
“But there is something Vanessa doesn’t know.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“She made one mistake.””
Daniel stared.
“What mistake?””
Their mother smiled sadly.
“She underestimated Nia.””
Nia looked at the screen.
Their mother continued.
“My daughter notices things people think she doesn’t.””
A pause.
“She remembers conversations.””
“She remembers details.””
“She sees what others ignore.””
Caleb smiled slightly.
That was true.
Nia always noticed everything.
Their mother continued.
“So Nia, if Vanessa tries to convince you that you are the problem…”
The camera moved slightly.
“Remember this.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You were the person who saw the truth first.””
The video ended.
The room stayed silent.
Then Daniel turned to Nia.
“I’m sorry.””
The words came immediately.
No excuses.
No explanation.
Just two words.
Nia looked at him.
“For what?””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“For not seeing it.””
She looked away.
“I tried to tell you.””
“I know.””
“No, Dad.””
Her voice broke.
“You don’t.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
The admission surprised her.
“I don’t.””
A tear fell down his face.
“I should have listened.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa laughed.
Quietly.
Everyone turned.
She stood near the doorway.
And she looked different.
Not defeated.
Not afraid.
Angry.
“You all really believe this?””
Daniel stared.
“The videos came from your phone.””
“The letter came from your wife.””
“The proof is overwhelming.””
Vanessa smiled.
“There’s one thing none of you understand.””
She reached into her pocket.
And pulled out her own phone.
“I wasn’t just collecting evidence.””
She tapped the screen.
“I was preparing for this.””
The phone connected to the laptop.
A new folder appeared.
Daniel frowned.
“What is that?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
A cold smile returned.
“Everything your daughter did.””
Nia froze.
“What?””
Vanessa opened the folder.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Photos.
Messages.
Recordings.
Then she clicked one.
A video loaded.
And Caleb’s blood turned cold.
Because the date on the file was from the week before Mom died.

And the person speaking in the video…
was Nia.
