Chapter 6: The Letter Under the Floorboard

Nia’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Somewhere Vanessa can’t reach.””

The words hung in the air.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“What does that mean?””

Nia didn’t answer immediately.

Her fingers trembled.

Caleb noticed.

He had seen Nia scared before.

When Mom died.

When Dad started working longer hours.

When Vanessa first moved in.

But this was different.

This wasn’t fear of something happening.

This was fear of something already lost.

“Nia,” Daniel said gently.

“Where is the letter?””

She looked toward the living room.

Toward the hallway.

Toward all the places Vanessa had changed.

Then she looked back at him.

“In my old room.””

Daniel frowned.

“Your old room?””

She nodded.

“The one I had before Vanessa moved in.””

Caleb remembered.

The small bedroom at the end of the hallway.

The one with the yellow curtains.

The one filled with old drawings, stuffed animals, and pictures of their family.

The room that disappeared after the wedding.

Vanessa had called it a “waste of space.””

Now it was a storage room.

“I thought you said that room was empty,” Daniel said.

“It is.””

“Then where did you hide a letter?””

Nia looked down.

“Under the floor.””

Everyone went silent.

Caleb blinked.

“The floor?””

Nia nodded.

“Mom showed me.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Your mother showed you?””

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“She told me if anything ever happened, I should remember where she kept important things.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Daniel looked away.

For a moment, he looked like a man trying to hold together memories he wasn’t ready to touch.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Nia’s eyes filled.

“Because I tried.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“I tried after Mom died.””

Her voice cracked.

“But you were always busy.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

“Nia.””

“You were making funeral arrangements. Talking to lawyers. Working. Trying to keep everything normal.””

She wiped her cheek.

“And then Vanessa came.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

Because he knew.

Not every painful truth was a lie.

Sometimes it was just something people didn’t want to hear.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at Nia.

“You expect him to believe a story about a secret letter?””

“It’s not a story.””

“You’re creating drama because you’re losing control.””

Caleb felt anger rise in his chest.

Again.

That was always Vanessa’s answer.

Whenever someone questioned her, she turned the person asking into the problem.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why are you so against seeing the letter?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You heard her.””

He stepped closer.

“If it’s fake, then prove it.””

Vanessa stared at him.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then she laughed quietly.

“You think this is about a letter?””

“I think you’re avoiding the question.””

“No.””

“Then answer.””

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“Fine.””

She pointed at Nia.

“I think she’s been hiding things from you for years.””

Nia shook her head.

“You’re changing the subject.””

“No. I’m telling the truth.””

“You always say that.””

“Because I do.””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

“I want to see the letter.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“I want to see it.””

The certainty in his voice made her quiet.

Caleb watched her carefully.

For the first time, Vanessa looked like she had lost control of the room.

Only for a moment.

Then she smiled.

“Okay.””

The smile was wrong.

Too calm.

“Let’s see the letter.””

The old bedroom smelled like dust.

Caleb stood at the doorway and looked around.

He barely recognized it.

The yellow curtains were gone.

The drawings on the walls were gone.

The little bookshelf where Nia kept her favorite stories had disappeared.

Everything that made it hers had been removed.

Only empty boxes remained.

Nia walked inside slowly.

Her eyes moved across the room.

“It used to be different.””

Daniel stood behind her.

“I know.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t.””

The words hurt.

But Daniel accepted them.

Because maybe she was right.

He hadn’t been there enough to know.

Nia walked toward the corner near the closet.

She knelt down.

Caleb watched.

“You really hid something under there?””

She nodded.

“Mom showed me.””

She pressed her fingers against a small gap between the wooden boards.

“There.””

She pulled.

The floorboard moved slightly.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Nia lifted the board.

Underneath was a small space.

Empty.

Her face changed.

“No.””

Caleb immediately noticed.

“What?””

Nia reached inside.

Her fingers searched.

Nothing.

“No.””

She looked again.

The panic in her voice grew.

“It was here.””

Daniel crouched beside her.

“What was?””

“The box.””

“What box?””

“The box with the letter.””

Vanessa stood near the door.

Silent.

Watching.

Nia looked around desperately.

“I put it here.””

Daniel looked at the empty space.

“When?””

“The week after Mom died.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Nia.””

“I’m sure!””

The room fell silent.

Her voice echoed.

She took a breath.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel softened.

“It’s okay.””

“No, it’s not.””

She looked at the empty space.

“Someone took it.””

Vanessa sighed.

“There it is.””

Everyone looked at her.

“The accusation.””

Nia turned.

“What?””

“You can’t find something, so someone must have stolen it.””

“I didn’t say that.””

“You implied it.””

“No. I said someone took it because someone did.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Do you hear this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“This is exactly what I mean. She creates situations where everyone is against her.””

Caleb couldn’t take it anymore.

“She’s not creating anything.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You’re choosing sides.””

“No.””

Caleb pointed toward the empty floor.

“I’m saying the box was there.””

“How would you know?””

“Because I saw it.””

Everyone turned.

Nia stared at him.

“You did?””

Caleb nodded slowly.

“Last year.””

Daniel frowned.

“Last year?””

“I was looking for my old game.””

He looked at the floor.

“I found the box.””

Nia stepped closer.

“What did you see?””

Caleb thought back.

The small wooden box.

The faded ribbon around it.

The handwriting on the top.

Mom’s handwriting.

“I saw Mom’s name.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Caleb…”

“I didn’t open it.””

“Why?””

“Because Nia told me not to touch her things.””

Nia looked at him.

A small smile appeared through her sadness.

“You remembered that?””

Caleb nodded.

“Of course.””

For a moment, the room felt normal.

Like they were a family again.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“So Caleb saw a box.””

Everyone looked at her.

“And?””

She shrugged.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

Daniel looked at her.

“It proves it existed.””

“It proves it existed a year ago.””

Her eyes moved toward Nia.

“Not that it had a letter.””

Nia’s expression fell.

Because Vanessa was right about one thing.

Nobody had seen the letter.

Nobody except her.

Daniel looked around the room.

“Who knew about this?””

Nia hesitated.

“My mom.””

“Anyone else?””

She shook her head.

“Caleb.””

Caleb swallowed.

“And…”

Everyone waited.

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“I told someone.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

“Who?””

Nia’s voice became smaller.

“Vanessa.””

The room changed.

Daniel looked shocked.

“You told her?””

“After Mom died, I thought…”

She stopped.

“I thought she wanted to help.””

Vanessa smiled.

A cold smile.

“And now I’m the villain because I listened?””

Nia stepped back.

“I told you because I trusted you.””

“And?””

“You said you didn’t want me holding onto the past.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was trying to help you heal.””

“No.””

Nia’s voice shook.

“You were trying to erase her.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know about the box?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Nobody touches anything in this house without permission.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa reached into her purse.

Slowly.

Caleb noticed.

Again.

The same movement.

The same hidden confidence.

She pulled out a small key.

Daniel frowned.

“What is that?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“The key to the storage room.””

Nia froze.

“Why do you have that?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Because I found the box.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared.

“You found it?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Vanessa looked directly at Nia.

“The day after I moved in.””

Caleb felt cold.

Nia’s face went pale.

“What did you do with it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She simply walked to the closet.

Opened an old cabinet.

And pulled out a dusty envelope.

Daniel’s breath caught.

Because written on the front were four words.

*For Daniel, when ready.*

Nia covered her mouth.

Caleb stared at Vanessa.

She had known.

She had always known.

Vanessa held the envelope between her fingers.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“I think you should read what your first wife wanted to tell you.””

She paused.

A small smile appeared.

“But before you do…”

She turned the envelope over.

May you like

And Daniel saw the seal.

It had already been broken.
